E.L. James Had A Miserable Time Filming Fifty Shades Of Grey, Which Led To Christian’s Book

E.L. James is an author who is happy to talk about the process of writing. We know, for example that her Fifty Shades books started as Twilight fan fiction and that her new book The Mister started coming together even before Fifty Shades of Grey. Recently, the author also revealed that her work on the Fifty Shades of Grey movie is what caused the Fifty Shades of Grey as told by Christian to come together.

So, how did this come about? Apparently, E.L. James’ stress on the set of Fifty Shades of Grey led to her writing the chapter from Christian's point of view that would go into Fifty Shades Freed. That led to a more extensive writing project, and the rest is history. Per the author,

In the back of the book of Fifty Shades Freed, when that came out, I actually put the first chapter of Fifty Shades of Grey in Christian’s point of view, just as a sort of bonus for readers, and people started asking me, ‘Oh, can you write this, can you write this, can you write this?’ And I didn’t have time and I didn’t expect to do it, but I had such a miserable time making the Fifty Shades of Grey movie that when I finished that I sat down and wrote that novel, and it was a really cathartic experience for me. I didn’t realize it would be quite as popular as it was.

The fact that director Sam Taylor-Johnson and E.L. James did not have the best relationship has been known for a while. Taylor-Johnson previously talked about how she and the author were not on the same wavelength, noting,

I like everyone, and I get really confused when they don't like me. I was so confused by EL James. I don't understand when I can't navigate a person, when there's no synergy.

However, E.L. James has been less blunt about her experience during the first movie in the trilogy, at least until now. In her interview with AZ Central, she touches on how unhappiness led to a fruitful writing breakthrough, but she still doesn’t get particularly gossipy about the experience.

I wish I could have been a fly on the wall on that set to see how the two interacted, however.

Ultimately, what E.L. James feels was kind of a rough situation turned out pretty happily. In general, fans seem to love the Fifty Shades of Grey movie, although Sam Taylor-Johnson did not return to the franchise.

In addition, Fifty Shades of Grey as told by Christian was given 1.25 million printings just for its initial run and the book sold over a million copies during its first week of release.

As has been common with the story of Christian Grey and Anastasia Steele, critics have been less nice about the series, but fans have totally devoured it.

Doc Ock Might Be The Main Villain Of The Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse Franchise

One of the things that was readily apparent in last year’s Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse was that this property is perfectly suited to be a franchise with its own cinematic universe. Fortunately, Sony seems to agree, and a spinoff and sequel are now in development. Although the Spider-Verse franchise is just beginning, it seems that it may already have a big bad in the form of Olivia Octavius, a.k.a. Doctor Octopus.

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse co-director Rodney Rothman hinted at the character’s future in the franchise, saying:

In the end, we found the movie played fine without us tagging every single possible thing. But we definitely think of Liv as someone who is not gone from the story, and who in many ways, is our most powerful bad guy. She's manipulating a lot of things to achieve her own grand ambitions.

Based on his comments to Total Film (via Screen Rant), it seems that Rodney Rothman and the filmmakers of Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse didn’t want to reference too much or do too much setting up for the future, but it is clear that Doc Ock is not gone and she may have a significant place in that future. The way he describes her as the most powerful bad guy implies that he sees her as a villain with serious potential in this franchise.

This is quite the turnaround considering that co-director Peter Ramsey previously said that there was a worry at one point (before Kathryn Hahn stepped into the recording booth) that Spider-Verse’s Doc Ock was going to be too goofy and quirky to seem like a real deadly threat that Miles and audiences should be concerned about.

Rodney Rothman’s comments about Liv evoke Thanos in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Although Miles Morales has already battled with her, the idea that she is still manipulating things behind the scenes, and pulling strings with her mechanical appendages to her own nefarious ends, is very reminiscent of the role Josh Brolin’s character played in The Infinity Saga. Over time we found out Thanos’ ambitions and what he was after, and finding out Liv’s will be something to watch for as this franchise continues.

In Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, Kingpin was the main villain, but the gender-swapped Doc Ock was perhaps the scariest foe Miles Morales encountered. Kathryn Hahn’s deliciously diabolical villain had a positively killer introduction where she went full mad scientist and wanted to watch Peter Parker disintegrate from being in the wrong dimension like Game of Thrones’ Qyburn wanting to keep a decapitated head for research.

Doc Ock is a formidable physical opponent in her own right, but it is her unhinged brilliance and mental game that will likely elevate her above the fray to become the franchise’s big bad. In Spider-Verse, she was the CEO and head scientist of Alchemax, and if she is really manipulating events, I could see that company playing a major role in future films.

Apparently Goose Had Some Trouble On The Captain Marvel Set Filming Around Skrulls

Captain Marvel? More like Goose: A Love Story. The latest MCU origin story featured a Flerken named Goose; he was quite the scene-stealer and we all can’t stop raving about all the cuteness the character brought to the superhero blockbuster. Goose was portrayed by four cats (Reggie, Archie, Rizzo and Gonzo) who interacted with just about every one of the film’s stars, some of whom reportedly spooked the cats a bit at first, per their trainer, Ursula Brauner of Boone’s Animals for Hollywood. In her words:

I think maybe it was probably the Skrull costumes. That was one of our challenges because they look so different from people. Ben Mendelsohn was so amazing getting the cats used to the costume and makeup, though. He showed them how he moved and sounded, and he was just really great getting the cats to like him.

Wouldn’t we like to know what goes through the minds of the cats who found themselves working with the green alien race of Captain Marvel? The trainer explained it was a challenge at first, but thanks to the patience of Ben Mendelsohn, who plays Talos, the cat actors warmed up to working with the Skrulls.

In Ursula Brauner’s interview with Vulture, she continued with a sweet anecdote about how the filmmakers helped make one animal star at ease with him on set, with these words:

I remember being in the quad-jet set in a very tight space, and Ben doesn’t look anything like a human being in his costume. Reggie was a little unfurled. [Captain Marvel directors Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck] took the time to say, “Let’s stop what we’re doing and get the cat comfortable.” We had Reggie sitting on a chair, and Ben was sitting in the chair next to him, and we let Reggie go to him and explore on his own volition, and pretty soon, he realized Ben was just like us, but he just looked different. It’s about taking the time to stop. And it shows onscreen.

The cats portraying Goose in Captain Marvel certainly look comfortable on screen, as they just about own every moment they’re in, including some especially memorable ones with Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury. The actor has given some mixed signals about his time working with the cats on set, telling us that “always a good day” when Goose was there and other outlets "I am not a cat person."

Brauner did set the record straight in regards to Jackson, noting he was one of the best people for the cats to work with on the film. She said they loved him and would go right up to the actor. Of the four cats, Reggie was the star cat actor, who probably is in 70% of the scenes seen on screen, according the his trainer.

In the Captain Marvel comic books, Carol Danvers does hang with a Flerken, though his name is famously Chewie. The filmmakers decided to go with Goose instead to match the film’s roots in the ‘90s and pay tribute to the fellow Air Force film character.

Goose has been treated like just about every other human star in Captain Marvel, as the character has been seen in massive banners in his own character poster everywhere and even walked the red carpet at the movie’s premiere. You can gush over the cat actors in Captain Marvel, in theaters now.

Superhero movies are arguably the most popular genre in filmmaking at the moment, with tons of studios attempting to get in on the action with their own shared universe. And since so many comic book stories are being adapted for the silver screen, actors like Ryan Reynolds, Josh Brolin, and Peter Dinklage have hadroles in multiple universes. That trend is about to continue, as Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn is set to write and possibly direct DC's Suicide Squad 2.

James Gunn's involvement in Suicide Squad 2 is a game changer, as his vision and sense of humor are what made the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise such a fan favorite of the MCU. Disney's firing of Gunn has remained a hot discussion since it went down in July of 2018, and now Marvel Studios' Kevin Feige has responded to Gunn's Suicide Squad gig, saying:

I went to see Aquaman last night and I really, really enjoyed it. And you know me, I've always supported [them]. I don't see a rivalry, I see cool films being made. And one thing you know about James Gunn, he makes cool films.

What a class act. Kevin Feige doesn't seem to have any hard feelings for James Gunn over his unceremonious departure from the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Furthermore, he's taken this opportunity to once again stress that there's no rivalry between the MCU and DC Universe.

Kevin Feige's comments to MTV News shows that the Marvel Studios head believes there's enough room for everyone at the table. DC or Marvel, it's clear the market for superhero movies is major, and the audience wants to have unique theatrical experiences. As such, Marvel and DC are able to help push each other, as both cinematic universes have been taking major risks as of late.

James Gunn's departure from the MCU is still a hot topic of conversation months later, as the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise is still very much in jeopardy. Producing Vol. 3 without Gunn's vision seems impossible, as everything from his music taste to his dancing style were infused into the franchise. Some fans were hoping that Disney might do an about face and invite Gunn back into the fold, although that doesn't look like it's happening anytime soon.

While Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is on indefinite hold over at Marvel, James Gunn quickly bounced back and found a way to bring his vision to the comic book genre. His sense of humor and penchant for colorful ensembles makes him the perfect choice to write Suicide Squad 2, and help the franchise recover from its somewhat sloppy first outing. But DC has a ton of projects coming down the line, so fans will have to wait and see what Gunn does with the titular group of DC villains.

All The Avengers Are Getting New Suits In Avengers: Endgame

Just as Captain Marvel mania has the world primed for the ultimate event in Marvel Cinematic history, we’ve gotten one final trailer for Avengers: Endgame. It has action, it has emotion, and… wait a minute?! Everyone’s got new, matching suits at the end of this trailer! This requires some serious breakdown, but in the meantime, take a look at the photos above and below.

Gotta start with Captain America on this one, because he’s the first one we see in the suit, and it’s all for a good reason. The de-facto leader of The Avengers, he’s going to have the most pressure on him during Avengers: Endgameto deliver in this conflict to end all MCU conflicts. Sporting this new suit, which has a color scheme that uses white as its primary note and a crimson red as an accent color, he certainly looks quite authoritative. But check out the rest of the team in these threads!

Here we've got Paul Rudd's Scott Lang / Ant-Man front and center in this frame, with Karen Gillan's Nebula and Jeremy Renner's Hawkeye flanking him in this walking shot. If you had any doubts about this previously goofy superhero taking his place on this team, let this image put them to rest forever... before Nebula and Hawkeye do it for you.

Seeing Don Cheadle's Col. Rhodes / War Machine, as well as the returning Hawkeye, standing side by side ups the ass-kicking potential here. Both men have a look on their faces that indicates great loss, and an even greater motivation to strike back at Thanos for what he's done to the universe. The Decimation took its fair share of victims, and losses are felt on all sides; but these two look the deadliest when it comes to their intentions.

Last, but not least, you've got this prime shot featuring Nebula a second time, alongside Scarlett Johansson's Black Widow, and Robert Downey Jr's Tony Stark joining the fray. Between Natasha going back to her crimson-hued hair, and Tony actually being back on Earth, alive, and ready to fight, there's a lot we're trying to unpack in this image. But one thing is for certain, these new suits aren't just here to look pretty. In fact, they probably have a very specific purpose to them, which is revealed as you break them down visually and pair them with some of the rumors flying around Avengers: Endgame's potential plot.

The two big plot components that might explain these new Avengers: Endgame suits are the alleged usage of time travel, and the potential meeting between Ant-Man's Scott Lang and Hank Pym in 1983. Looking closely at these new suits, they look similar in design to Scott's Ant-Man suit; and the usage of the particular hue of red in those suits just ties it all together. So if The Avengers are going to go time traveling together, it looks like everyone is ready with the right duds for a trip through some quantum realm time vortexes.

Of course, one has to expect that there will be a helmet piece to these new suits in Avengers: Endgame, as not only will everyone need to pressurize their suits and protect their heads during any ensuing battles; but they also might have to keep their faces shielded during the action. While each suit does have the Avengers' insignia on them, this is discreet enough that they won't be able to be identified at long distances. At the same time, teammates will know who's fighting with them, so it works that way as well.

Keep those theories in mind, as you watch the Avengers: Endgame trailer again. Because, you know you're totally going to click the video below and do just that. Don't fight it, folks.

These new suits look ready for travel through space, time, and anything that could be thrown at The Avengers. And they're certainly going to need all the help they can get, with Thanos already causing tons of devastation, and promising to unleash even more before all is said and done. Avengers: Endgame heads to theaters on April 26, 2019.

It's a very exciting week for Marvel fans, as Avengers: Endgame is finally arriving in theaters. It's been a long year of waiting since Infinity War hit theaters, and shocked moviegoers by having Thanos win over the good guys. Audiences were left to watch in horror as countless characters faded to dust before our eyes, in a twist ending no one was expecting.

But there were a few characters whose fate was left vague, as they weren't seen being dusted in the Wakandan field. Chief among them is T'Challa's sister Shuri, playing by Letitia Wright. Shuri was confirmed to be dusted when Endgame's character posters hit the internet, leaving fans disappointed about the genius princess. It turns out that Wright found out about Shuri the same way, recently saying:

It was surprising. I saw everybody in the colored photos, you know the colored posters, and then I saw myself in grey. And I was like, 'I just died out of nowhere!' I think the whole of Twitter was pretty upset so I kind of logged off and didn't log back on. So I'm waiting to see how that came together and how that panned out tonight.

Same, Letitia Wright. Same.

Letitia Wright's comments to Marvel Entertainment come from the Avengers: Endgame purple carpet at last night's premiere. And they're likely going to surprise many fans, who thought that the actors at least knew whether they lived or died. But Wright was kept in the dark like everyone else, which just shows how tight security is at Marvel Studios. Especially when it comes to Endgame.

When we last saw Shuri, she was attempting to separate Vision's consciousness from the Mind Stone. She warned it wold be a long process, but the Black Order brought massive forces that eventually put Shuri in the fray. She briefly faced off against Corvus Glaive with her Gauntlets, before he and Vision came to blows and flew out the window. Letitia Wright's character wasn't seen again, and wasn't shown turning to dust alongside the rest of the Avengers and Guardians.

The first Avengers: Endgame trailer showed Shuri among the fallen characters, but some fans thought this might be a red herring. The Russo Brothers have already admitted to putting fake footage into trailers, allowing moviegoers to be truly surprised by the film's contents. But once the movie's character posters arrived last month, Shuri's fate was sealed. She was one of the many characters to get a black and white poster, meaning she was dusted as a result of The Decimation

With both Shuri and T'Challa gone, Wakanda is without a ruler. What happened to the technologically advanced society after half the population vanished?

Whoa, Bohemian Rhapsody Just Passed $900 Million Worldwide

Mamma mia, this movie can't stop winning! Bohemian Rhapsody came out November 2, 2018, but here we are in April 2019 and it's still picking up cash around the world.

The Queen movie was made off a reported production budget of $52 million and currently has a worldwide total of $901,417,909. It's amazing. This troubled movie is pushing a billion. It isn't likely to get there, or even much closer than this, but who saw it even getting here?

Bohemian Rhapsody's current totals are $216,217,834 from the domestic North American (U.S./Canada) box office and a very strong $685,200,075 from the foreign box office, per Box Office Mojo.

As THR noted, a late run in China (with censored scenes) and popular play in Japan helped push the movie over the $900 million edge this weekend. China just gave the Rami Malek movie $13.9 million, but so far it's really Japan that has stepped up. Bohemian Rhapsody has made $114,658,629 so far in Japan alone. Apparently it has become something of a cultural phenomenon in Japan, bringing new life and popularity to Queen.

Bohemian Rhapsody is already the highest-grossing music biopic of all time, and it's now 20th Century Fox's No. 4 title of all time, if you don't adjust for inflation.

It was the sixth highest grossing movie of 2018, worldwide. Sixth may not sound that impressive, but it definitely is when you consider its peers -- Avengers: Infinity War, Black Panther, Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, Incredibles 2, and Aquaman. Bohemian topped the worldwide grosses of Venom, Mission: Impossible - Fallout, Deadpool 2, Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald, Ant-Man and the Wasp, and Ready Player One.

All of those movies had pretty massive action blockbuster budgets and ambitions -- except Bohemian, which was "just" a music biopic made for under $55 million.

Bohemian Rhapsody was also a big winner on the 2018-2019 awards circuit, which surprised the critics who never understood any of the love for the film. Bohemian won four Oscars -- including Best Actor for Rami Malek, plus Best Film Editing, Best Sound Editing, and Best Sound Mixing. The movie itself, nominated for Best Picture at the Oscars, won Best Motion Picture – Drama at the the Golden Globe Awards.

Bryan Singer directed most of the film, and will still reportedly make some good money from it, but he was fired in December 2017. Dexter Fletcher was hired toward the end to complete the film. That led to some scene reordering and at least one editing issue.

Queen and the late Freddie Mercury's family should also pick up quite a bit of money from Bohemian Rhapsody's impressive box office run. And while that run is winding down, it's clearly not over yet. Chinese Censors Banned These Bohemian Rhapsody LGBTQ Moments

It's only been a couple of days since Bohemian Rhapsody was released into Chinese theaters, and it was a long road to even get there. This week, word is coming out as to what's been cut from the film. We knew that Bohemian Rhapsody was going to have some issues as it was cleared for a Chinese release and would endure some omissions due to Chinese restrictions and censors. Now we have a specific rundown of just what's been cut, and the trimmed material ranges from the mere usage of the word “gay” to crucial scenes involving the arc of Freddie Mercury's eventual acceptance of his sexuality.

The specific moments trimmed from Bohemian Rhapsody include the comedic beat during Queen's early Top of the Pops performance where Freddie's crotch is in full view of the camera, a couple of kisses between the Queen front man and his lovers, and even a moment where band mate Roger Taylor tells Freddie that his haircut makes him look “gayer.”

But perhaps the biggest cuts to Bohemian Rhapsody are two scenes that most help nail down the film's identity. The first is the moment with Freddie Mercury and his wife Mary, played by Lucy Boynton, who eventually outs her husband as gay; and the second is the recreation of the “I Want To Break Free” music video, which led to an MTV ban on the song's music video back in 1984. Both are lynchpin moments for the twin narratives of both Freddie's and the band's evolutions, and yet both were dropped.

In total, six sequences were cited as removed in an analysis provided to CNN by documentarian Fan Popo, a Chinese-born filmmaker. Also known as an LGBTQ activist in his home country, Popo revealed this list of cut moments as an antithesis to the viewpoint that Bohemian Rhapsody's mere release in the country should be seen as a win. Further driving his point home, he provided the following feelings about these moments being excised from Bohemian Rhapsody:

Rather than homophobic, I think (China's censors) are sexphobic. They are probably the most conservative people in China, that's why they are chosen for this job.

It was highly unexpected that Bohemian Rhapsody would hit Chinese theaters at all due to the country's strict LGBTQ media stance, so even the fact a trimmed down version of the movie made it to theaters is news.  Should a potential sequel to Bohemian Rhapsody that's been bandied about as of late ever get off the ground, it would be interesting to see if rather than pushing the envelope and trimming the film to fit a specific release, the next picture would just avoid those sorts of moments at the script level. Not only would such an approach save time and money on cutting two different versions of the film, it would potentially give this hypothetical blockbuster a means to break even more records than its predecessor. At the same time, it wouldn't be super accurate to Freddie Mercury's life.

While Bohemian Rhapsody didn't suffer the fate of being banned from China, much like Crimson Peak, it did run into some rather sharp editing shears on the way to its release. Which begs the question, which is the better fate: to have your film's message altered or to not be shown at all in a particular market? That something that the (now) Fox-owned Disney will need to figure out movie forward.  It's also something you can think about as you watch Bohemian Rhapsody, which is already available on Digital HD, as well as home video.

What does it take to play Batman? Early word has Robert Pattinson cast as the younger Caped Crusader for Matt Reeves' The Batman. While that hasn't been confirmed, it also hasn't stopped movie fans from commenting on Pattinson's merits. Most of the conversation has followed his acting in various films, with detractors often (but not always) mentioning Twilight, and his supporters pointing out the many other roles he's played.

But what about his physical features? To Willem Dafoe, Robert Pattinson has the key attribute on that front.

Right now, Robert Pattison is co-starring with Willem Dafoe in The Lighthouse, a black-and-white horror film that just opened to raves and awards at the Cannes Film Festival. While Dafoe was interviewed about the movie, he was asked to react to the idea of Pattinson as the new Batman. Here's Dafoe's take:

Listen, sure, why not? Why not? He's got a strong chin. That's a part of it. Can you imagine anyone with a weak chin ever playing Batman? I don't think so!

Sold! But seriously, is that the main criteria to be a good Batman -- a strong chin?

Looking back at past Batmans from Adam West and Michael Keaton to Val Kilmer, George Clooney, Christian Bale, and Ben Affleck -- they do seem to have good chins. A certain jawline does seem to be required, since the cowl covers everything but your mouth and chin. I would also argue that the Batman voice is essential. I'm not down for an overly growly Batman voice, if the actor does not naturally have a voice that low. Don't force it or you sound cartoonish.

Speaking of Willem Dafoe, though, the man knows from superhero movies. He's a great example for Robert Pattinson in how to balance indie films like The Lighthouse and superhero movies like Spider-Man (Norman Osborn) and Aquaman (Vulko).

During the rest of his talk with Variety, Willem Dafoe mentioned that he and "Rob" Pattinson work and rehearse very differently, which may have led to some creative tension on The Lighthouse set. No personal tension, he emphasized, but they didn't hang out or anything.

The Lighthouse sounds like it was an intense shoot in general, and Robert Pattinson said he came the closest he ever had to punching a director when filming a particularly drenching scene. Pattinson seems to approach his roles with a lot of intensity, and that should help if he does end up playing Bruce Wayne in The Batman.

So far, The Lighthouse has earned rave reviews, with a current rating of 100% from 31 reviews on Rotten Tomatoes. There's no release date yet, beyond the recent Cannes premiere, but it's another intriguing project for Robert Pattinson's eclectic filmography, which may or may not also include The Batman in 2021.
