J.K. Simmons Is Still Hoping To Play Commissioner Gordon Again

J.K. Simmons Is Still Hoping To Play Commissioner Gordon Again
Commissioner Gordon in Justice League

The DC live-action universe has had a fascinating tenure in theaters, full of both highs and lows. Warner Bros. seems to have recovered nicely, surfing on the success Aquaman and the anticipation for Shazam! But it wasn't long ago that things were looking bleak, as Batman v Superman and Justice League failed to perform critically. The latter was also a box office disappointment, which had the potential to put the entire shared universe in jeopardy.

Ultimately, the DCEU pivoted away from serialized storytelling, allowing filmmakers to have more capsulated and controlled projects. Ben Affleck has departed his role as Bruce Wayne/Batman, with Matt Reeves needing to recast for his long developing movie, The Batman. But what does that mean for J.K. Simmons' Commissioner Gordon? Simmons had a brief role in Justice League, which was meant to expand before things changed at the studio. But the Oscar-winning actor still wants to play the character again, recently saying:

I wish I had something to offer, although, if I actually did know more than I do, they probably would shoot me if I told you. I know nothing. I know that I signed up to do three movies, potentially, and I hope there are gonna be two more. It has been in and around and through, whether it be Batman or Justice League or another Suicide Squad, or where Commissioner Gordon might end up appearing again, I'm open to it. I'm not sitting at home waiting for the phone to ring in the meantime, but I hope there's more of that in the future.

Is anyone else's FOMO going through the roof? J.K. Simmons has the interest and contract to bring him back to the role of Commissioner Gordon, although it's unclear if he'll be asked to return for a future installment in the DC live-action universe. Fingers crossed.

J.K. Simmons' comments to ET should excite the hardcore DC fans out there, as well as moviegoers who appreciate his small role in Justice League. Gordon is one of Batman's most loyal allies, and it's a character that's been adapted into live-action a number of times, including Gary Oldman in Christopher Nolan's Dark Knight trilogy. Simmons has attitude, talent, and massive biceps to play the Gotham City lawman, so hopefully Warner Bros. decides to bring him back for a larger role in the future.

Justice League had a rocky road to theaters. Zack Snyder departed during filming due to a family tragedy, leading Joss Whedon to step in and complete the project. But their conflicting visions resulted in a film that failed to resonate with audiences, and ultimately underperformed at the box office. Ben Affleck ultimately dropped out of the director's chair and eventually the role of the protagonist in the Batman solo movie, which J.K. Simmons was expected to appear in.

The Batman has sat in development hell, but Matt Reeves is still attached as director, and occasionally updates the public on its writing process. In fact, The Batman even has a tentative release date in June of 2021. But production is going to have to amp up, including the recasting of Batman, and the assembling of his rogues gallery. Let's just hope that J.K. Simmons will be included as Commissioner Gordon, and get another go at the beloved supporting character.

J.K. Simmons might not have had an especially meaty role in Justice League, but it was an aspect to the ill-fated blockbuster that audiences seem to have responded to. Simmons has considerable star power, and he seemed like an inspiring choice to take the mantle of Commissioner Gordon. Plus, take a look at that guy's mustache. He played Gordon with humor and heart, and was able to roll with the punches once The League assembled.

Of course, comic book fans know and love J.K. Simmons from his tenure as J. Jonah Jameson in Sam Saimi's Spider-Man trilogy. He was appropriately campy and despicable, with a performance that was ripped straight from the page. Moviegoers delighted to see his cigar-chomping egomaniac, especially when the comedic supporting character was put into the heart of the superhero drama.

Getting another few superhero movies from J.K. Simmons was a dream for the fandom, but it looks like his future in the DC live-action universe is still unclear. As Simmons said, he's contracted for another two appearances in the franchise, and hasn't the slightest idea if/when that could happen. It's also entirely possible that the actor could be let go from his contract, and hang up Gordon's hat before he could really get a feel for it.

The recasting of Bruce Wayne in The Batman is one factor that may be preventing J.K. Simmons from appearing in Matt Reeves' developing blockbuster. Reeves is reportedly basing his story on a younger version of Bruce Wayne, who is greener than the jaded and experienced version Ben Affleck brought to theaters. If we're getting a younger Batman, then one would think a younger Jim Gordon may be a supporting character. If only because Simmons' involvement in both timelines would be a confusing.

But with the DC universe branching out with director-driven projects, perhaps Matt Reeves will ignore the rules and bring in J.K. Simmons as planned. He's an extremely accomplished actor, and recently won the Oscar for his performance in Whiplash. Since Warner Bros. has him contracted for two more potential appearances, it seems foolish to move on to another actor. But it all depends on what Reeves vision is, and if The Batman ever finally makes it to theaters.

If J.K. Simmons isn't included in The Batman, he could potentially pop up in another DC project set in the present. Gotham City is becoming a major setting in the shared universe with projects like Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn). If the Gotham City Sirens movie also gets off the ground, that might be the perfect time to bring Commissioner Gordon back onto the silver screen. With Renee Montoya appearing in Birds of Prey, the GCPD could potentially become a larger presence in the universe as well.

The Batman is currently set to arrive in theaters on June 25th, 2021. In the meantime, be sure to check out our 2019 release list to plan your next trip to the movies.

Why Captain Marvel Changed Annette Bening's Role From Male To Female

Why Captain Marvel Changed Annette Bening's Role From Male To Female
Captain Marvel annette bening

Spoiler Warning: Again, you should see Captain Marvel before reading this article. Come back after you've seen the movie!

Captain Marvel is finally out theaters and it looks like it'll be a healthy opening weekend for the MCU's latest. Fans seeing the movie this weekend finally got the long awaited answers to some questions, including the true identity of Annette Bening's character. She was previously confirmed to play the Supreme Intelligence of the Kree, but there's an extra twist to her character -- or should I say characters.

Annette Bening also plays Wendy Lawson, otherwise known as a Kree named Mar-Vell, the character who most inspires Carol Danvers. In the comics, Mar-Vell is a man (Walter Lawson) who goes by the superhero name Captain Marvel and is a love interest of Carol. Marvel Studios decided to flip the genders for the role, and Kevin Feige shed some light on why they decided to take that route.

It was late in the development of the movie. Frankly, as we were approaching shooting, we were casting male -- We were looking for a male Mar-Vell and developing the script at the same time, as we often do. We spoke to a few people, but as you've now seen in the movie, it's a limited role, because of the nature of the structure of the story. It was, I believe, Anna [Boden] who came up with the suggestion in a script meeting that, "Why don't make the S.I., the vision that she sees, Mar-Vell?" The idea was just before we brought Annette on. So, it was relatively late in the development process and one of a handful of things that happened as the script was taking on its final form, that was an epiphany that Anna had, and it was like, "Oh, of course! That's perfect!" And we stopped looking for another actor.

As Kevin Feige told ET, it sounds like they were originally bringing Annette Bening on board to only play the Supreme Intelligence. In the film, the S.I. is the AI leader of Kree and takes the form of the person most admired by whoever it's speaking to. Co-director Anna Boden had the idea that Carol's vision should be of Mar-Vell. Thus Mar-Vell would also have to be played by Bening.

Because the role of Mar-Vell was limited to begin with, it was an idea that worked out pretty well for the movie. Gender flipping the character certainly doesn't have a negative impact on Captain Marvel and there's never a reason to turn down adding more Annette Bening to anything.

You can see Annette Bening as Mar-Vell whenever you want because Captain Marvel is in theaters right now. To learn more about the movie before your showing, here's what we know so far.

Will Ferrell And Adam McKay Are Breaking Up, Creatively, After 13 Years

Will Ferrell And Adam McKay Are Breaking Up, Creatively, After 13 Years
Will Ferrell and Adam McKay

Like Detectives Gamble and Hoitz, racers Ricky Bobby and Cal Naughton Jr., newspeople Ron Burgundy and Veronica Corningstone, and stepbrothers Brennan Huff and Dale Doback, Will Ferrell and Adam McKay have been an unstoppable team, finding success in Hollywood for over a decade. But all good things must come to an end, and Will Ferrell and Adam McKay are breaking up, creatively.

The two men have decided to go their separate ways for future creative endeavors, thus ending a creative partnership that has lasted 13 years. Together Will Ferrell and Adam McKay formed the comedy generating production company Gary Sanchez, which spawned a spinoff company, the female-centric Gloria Sanchez. Those Paramount-based production companies will see through development and completion of their existing projects, but will probably be winding down as Will Ferrell and Adam McKay move on to new things.

In a statement released to Deadline, Will Ferrell and Adam McKay confirmed the split while ending things on a thankful and positive note. The statement reads:

The last 13 years could not have been more enjoyable and satisfying for the two of us at Sanchez Productions. We give massive thanks to our incredible staff and executives and all the writers, directors and actors we worked with through the years. The two of us will always work together creatively and always be friends. And we recognize we are lucky as hell to end this venture as such.

Although they may be breaking up from their formal creative partnership, this parting is not an unhappy one, as the two seem to be quite thankful and proud of the time they spent together and projects they worked on. This is not an acrimonious split, but an amicable and mutual decision. While their business relationship is coming to an end, their personal one is not, and Will Ferrell and Adam McKay remain close friends.

This isn’t the end of their work together either. As they say in their statement, they will continue to work together creatively. The two still have a huge slate of shared projects, so although this is the end of one chapter of the Ferrell/McKay partnership, we may still see Adam McKay and Will Ferrell’s name in the credits of future movies (fingers crossed Step Brothers 2 will reunite them one day).

The two have begun to diverge in their creative pursuits, with Adam McKay moving more towards politically charged films, like last year’s Vice, while Will Ferrell continues with the more traditional comedy fare that has made him a household name. As far as the future is concerned, the details are still being worked out, but both Ferrell and McKay will explore new endeavors and projects individually, and they are each expected to form new ventures for their post-Gary Sanchez careers.

So ends a partnership that is probably best measured in the number of laughs delivered. In addition to collaborating as producers on films like Daddy’s Home, Adam McKay directed Will Ferrell in a slew of modern comedy classics, including Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby, Anchorman and Anchorman 2, The Other Guys and Step Brothers.

Will Ferrell will next be onscreen later this year in James Franco’s long-delayed Zeroville, a star-studded film about Hollywood in 1969, not to be confused with Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, which is also a star-studded film about Hollywood in 1969. That should make for an interesting double feature.

After his multiple Oscar nominations for Vice, Adam McKay is next attached to direct Bad Blood, another ripped-from-the-headlines story, this one about biotech entrepreneur Elizabeth Holmes. The film is supposed to star Jennifer Lawrence and Will Ferrell is also attached as a producer.

Check out our 2019 release schedule to keep track of all the movies coming to theaters this year, and let us know your favorite Will Ferrell and Adam McKay film in the comments below.

Dwayne Johnson's Skyscraper Super Bowl Trailer Comes With A Fun Twist

Dwayne Johnson's Skyscraper Super Bowl Trailer Comes With A Fun Twist

Thus far, 2018 has been going quite well for Dwayne Johnson. With the exception of one weekend, Jumanji: Welcome To The Jungle has been at the top of the box office charts all year. That said, Johnson has never been one to dwell on his successes, which is why we are now just a few months away from Skyscraper -- the new action/thriller that just debuted its first trailer during the Super Bowl. The film looks absolutely insane, and the trailer has revealed one very interesting twist on the chaos: The Rock only has one leg in the film. Check out the trailer, below.

Directed by Rawson Marshall Thurber, Skyscraper stars Dwayne Johnson as Will Sawyer, a former soldier, FBI Hostage Rescue Team leader and amputee who is employed checking security systems in high-rise buildings. Unfortunately, when his work brings him to China, he finds himself not only framed for arson, but needing to rescue his family trapped inside the world's tallest and safest building. What follows is a race against time (and a growing blaze) to save the people he loves in the face of an array of seemingly insurmountable odds.

It's a fascinating twist on a traditional action movie premise to give The Rock's character only one leg in this movie. He's a physical powerhouse in almost all of his films (which generally matches the fact that he's quite literally one of the biggest movie stars in the world), and he's almost always framed as a dominant figure against his enemies. By making him an amputee (the origins of which we don't quite know yet), the film is able to put him at a tactical disadvantage while also adding new dimensions to his personality.

And, of course, the trailer also makes it clear that a prosthetic leg isn't particularly helpful when you're dangling 240 floors in the air.

Beyond the fact that Will Sawyer only has one leg, Skyscraper looks incredibly intriguing just for the ways in which it blends elements of classic genres, while also telling a new story. When Dwayne Johnson released a first-look at the movie on social media last week, he specifically emphasized the fact that it's not based upon any existing property, franchise or piece of intellectual property. That said, it also seems to play like a love letter to classic disaster movies like The Towering Inferno (which The Rock's San Andreas also did in 2015), as well as action classics like Die Hard. Couple that with The Rock's inherent box office appeal, and there are a number of reasons to start getting excited about Skyscraper's particular brand of action.

CinemaBlend will bring you more information related to Skyscraper (as well as all of Dwayne Johnson's biggest movies) as more details are made available to us. Skyscraper will debut in theaters later this summer on July 13.

According to a recent interview with Collider, however, Affleck seems ready to heal that divide. While promoting the largely well-received Triple Frontier, he was asked whether any of his previous characters would feature in Jay and Silent Bob Reboot. His response was surprisingly optimistic and welcoming of the idea.

Why Us' Twist Ending Was Necessary, According To Jordan Peele

Why Us' Twist Ending Was Necessary, According To Jordan Peele
Lupita Nyong'o in Us

The following contains major spoilers for Us.

Us is a movie that has a lot of audiences talking. It's a horror movie with a lot of symbolism and metaphor that has sent many back to see the film more than once and still left them with questions. However, nothing has more people talking than the film's twist ending. At the end of the story we learned that not everything was exactly what it seemed. According to director Jordan Peele, that twist was necessary because it served the entire theme of the story.

In the final moments of Us we discover that the character that we've known as Adelaide isn't exactly who we thought she was. She had changed places with her "above ground" counterpart and taken over her life as a child. This confusion over who was the "hero" and who was the "villain" of the story was exactly what the story was always about, as the director tells the Empire Film Podcast. According to Jordan Peele...

This movie’s about maybe the monster is you. It’s about us, looking at ourselves as individuals and as a group. The protagonist in the movie is the surrogate for the audience, so it felt like at the end of the day, I wasn’t doing my core theme any justice if I wasn’t revealing that we have been the bad guy in this movie. We’ve been following the villain. I say villain lightly because I think there are many experiences of the film, and I think a lot of people go through a question of what is good and evil? Does that even exist? Both characters are lovable and terrifying, based on the lives they’ve led they’ve just sort of inverted the paths.

Jordan Peele had spoken at length, even before Us was released, about how the idea of the movie was about looking at ourselves and realizing that the true enemy might not be some sort of nebulous "other," but actually ourselves. This is obvious in the fact that the "monsters" of this horror movie are dark and twisted versions of the main characters.

However, this idea is taken to another level when the film's twist is revealed. The audience is forced to question who the real monster is. We now have some degree of sympathy for the character we knew as Red, who had her life stolen from her at an early age. At the same time, the character we know as Adelaide is largely still the same person that we've known through the movie. She's still the same wife and mother trying to protect her family, even if it all came about following a questionable act as a child.

Even if you figured out the twist early in the film, as I was unfortunately, able to do, it doesn't really lessen the impact of the moment. In fact, if anything, seeing where the movie is going early on only causes you to consider the movie's questions for a longer period of time, as you watch the events unfold. That's probably the mark of a good twist.

The Original Scooby Doo Actors Had A Mixed Reaction To The New Cast

The Original Scooby Doo Actors Had A Mixed Reaction To The New Cast

No pop culture property is going to remain dormant for too long when Hollywood has the opportunity to use it. It's been 15 years since popular 1970s animated character Scooby-Doo and his mystery solving buddies were on the big screen, and that's more enough time to justify a reboot. A new animated film is on the way, and some of the actors from the early-2000s live-action version have feelings. Matthew Lillard, who played Shaggy, is more than a little upset to discover that he's being replaced, and also annoyed he didn't get any sort of a heads up.

Last week it was announced that a new animated Scooby-Doo movie was being produced with names like Will Forte and Gina Rodriguez attached to voice the familiar characters that we all remember from the various versions of the cartoon show that started in 1969 and has existed in one form or another ever since.

Of course, for fans of a certain age, the most well-known version of these characters may have come from a pair of live-action movies. The first was released in 2002 and, while it wasn't exactly a critical darling, it ended up grossing over $270 million around the world. That was good enough to spawn the sequel, 2004's Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed.

While it seemed highly unlikely that we were ever going to get another live-action Scooby-Doo at this point, at least with the same cast, it wouldn't be the first time that a franchise was brought back after a long hiatus. The one thing a reboot does do is seemingly make that even less likely as we rarely see a franchise go backwards, though that can happen too.

As with any reboot scenario, there are fans that are less than thrilled to learn of it. There's often a feeling that a reboot, simply by existing, is a slight to whatever came before.

Not everybody, however, seems to be too bent out of shape over the reboot. Freddie Prinze Jr. who played Fred in the live-action film, alongside wife Sarah Michelle Geller as Daphne, seems to be taking it all in stride. He's glad Scooby-Doo is making it to the screen in some form for a new generation to enjoy.

While the new movie won't have any connection to the live-action films, it will be connected to the animated characters. Frank Welker has been the voice of Scooby-Doo himself since 2002, and he'll reprise his role in the new film, so this new movie isn't entirely without pedigree.

While the main cast of the new film has been revealed, maybe the previously actors could get voice cameos as a nice nod to their previous work. We'll have to wait and see. The new Scooby-Doo and company is set to bow in May of 2020.

Arnold Schwarzenegger Just Proved He's Still Got Conan The Barbarian Moves

Arnold Schwarzenegger Just Proved He's Still Got Conan The Barbarian Moves
Arnold Schwarzenegger as Conan the Barbarian

If that third Conan movie ever actually happens, Arnold Schwarzenegger will be ready for it -- even at age 71.

Arnold Schwarzenegger has had a fascinating life so far. He started as a bodybuilder -- becoming the youngest-ever Mr. Universe with his first win at age 20 -- before becoming a Hollywood movie star, and even later governor of California. He's still active with bodybuilding, including in the annual Arnold Sports Festival. Schwarzenegger is currently at the Arnold Sports South America event, and showed that he's still got those Conan the Barbarian moves he first showed off in 1982:

Nice. Let's hope his 1980s self doesn't sniff at that and insist he would've hit the bullseye.

If you're curious to see more of the Arnold Sports action -- and Arnold's reaction to the action -- check out @ArnoldSports to watch more inspiring clips like this:

Arnold Schwarzenegger still has a big heart for the warriors of the world.

Conan the Barbarian was one of Arnold Schwarzenegger's first major film roles. But his first lead was as Hercules in the 1969 film Hercules in New York. After playing Conan in the 1982 movie, he returned to that role for the 1984 sequel Conan the Destroyer. And then ... no third movie. Yet?

Anyway, right after his second Conan movie, his Hollywood career really took off. He landed the role of T-800 in The Terminator and went from that to Red Sonja, Commando, Predator, The Running Man, Twins, Total Recall, Kindergarten Cop, T2, Last Action Hero, True Lies, Junior, Eraser, Jingle All the Way, Batman & Robin, End of Days, Collateral Damage, The Expendables, and now more Terminator in Terminator 6, Dark Fate.

Phew! He made a lot of movies around those titles, too, and somehow had time to do other things -- like run for office and even host The Apprentice, briefly, after Donald Trump left.

Age is just a number, and Arnold Schwarzenegger is still relatively young at 71. I'm excited to see him back for Terminator: Dark Fate this November, and also -- hopefully -- alongside his 72-year-old buddy Sylvester Stallone for The Expendables 4. As Sly recently posted with a photo of both Arnold and Bruce Willis, they are "the last of the breed."

Not everyone loves sequels, but Arnold Schwarzenegger has definitely embraced the franchise life -- from Terminator to The Expendables. He has been trying to get a third Conan movie -- or TV series -- off the ground for a while, and recently explained why that has been such a trial.

As we wait for Terminator 6 to arrive this fall, cross our fingers for The Expendables 4, and maybe just pray for Conan the Barbarian, keep up with everything headed to the big screen this year with our 2019 movie guide.

Mary Poppins Returns Has A Weird, Special Connection To The Original Through A Deleted Song

Mary Poppins Returns Has A Weird, Special Connection To The Original Through A Deleted Song
Cover is not the book Mary Poppins Returns

Rob Marshall’s Mary Poppins Returns is very much a love-letter to its 1964 predecessor, weaving a wonderful new story with the wonderful familiar world and characters. There are many fun and smart connections made between the two features, both stylistically and narratively, and even though they are made decades apart they still feel of a piece. Obviously 99% of that is extremely purposeful and intentional, but the sequel also has a fantastic accidental link to the first movie as well – specifically through a musical sequence that both films attempted, but ultimately decided not to use.

Last week I had the immense pleasure of sitting down with Rob Marshall to discuss his work on Mary Poppins Returns for the film’s home video press day, and during the interview talked about one song that was developed for the feature but not used: “The Anthropomorphic Zoo.” As the director explained, it was initially going to be a part of the extended journey taken by Mary (Emily Blunt), Jack (Lin-Manuel Miranda), Anabel (Pixie Davies), John (Nathanael Saleh), and Georgie (Joel Dawson), but was cut back when the sequence became too long:

There is a song that we had originally called "The Anthropomorphic Zoo," which was part of the animation sequence, but the animation sequence was way too long… It's about a zoo where people are in the cages, and the animals are walking around with Victorian garb on and pointing at the people in the cages. And it's very funny, and it comes from the books. Well, we tried it, we wrote the song, and it's there on the DVD to see with little bits some wonderful storyboarding and so forth, but we decided not to do it.

Obviously this kind of thing happens all the time, as every movie in history has at least one potentially great cut sequence that just didn’t work as part of the finished product. What makes this case special, however, is that apparently an almost identical decision was made in the making of the original Mary Poppins.

As Rob Marshall explained, the inspiration behind “The Anthropomorphic Zoo” came directly from the beloved book series by P.L. Travers on which Mary Poppins and Mary Poppins Returns are both based, and fate would have it that it wasn’t the first time that the sequence was considered for live-action adaptation. After deciding not to include the number, the filmmaker made a surprising discovery, learning that the original basically made the exact same call back in the early 1960s:

After we decide not to do it I went to the archives here at Disney, and I saw that they had tried to do the same thing in the '64 version. There was a song called "The Chimpanzoo" that the Sherman brothers wrote, and they didn't use it either. So that was the craziest thing ever. Isn't that crazy?

It’s a fantastic little coincidence – but what makes it a little extra fun is that it’s not exactly a “lost” Mary Poppins song anymore. Even though the production didn’t actually fully develop the sequence, there will be a special feature on the Digital, Blu-ray and DVD copies of Mary Poppins Returns that will give audiences a chance to listen to the track and imagine what could have been.

You can watch my full interview with Rob Marshall, including his great bit of trivia about “The Anthropomorphic Zoo” by clicking play on the video below.

Following its massively successful box office run over the past few months, Mary Poppins Returns is heading to home video very soon. The hit musical will be available for digital download starting on March 12th, and those of you who collect physical copies will be able to find 4K, Blu-ray, and DVD editions in stores on March 19th.

Venom Just Passed Justice League At The Box Office

Venom Just Passed Justice League At The Box Office

If you were to compile a list of the top ten most popular comic book characters, there's a solid possibility that Venom wouldn't make that list. Three characters who almost certainly would are Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman, DC's trinity of heroes who form the core of the Justice League. That's part of what makes Venom's commercial performance so impressive, as Sony's Spider-Verse flick has now passed Warner Bros.' Justice League at the box office.

The symbiote felled Superman and Co. on the strength of its opening in China, where the film debuted this past Friday. After a $34.2 million opening day in China, Venom exceeded expectations and then some, raking in a $111 million opening weekend, according to Box Office Mojo. That, along with the money Venom made domestically and in other markets over the weekend, vaults Sony's film to almost $675 million worldwide, well above Justice League's $657.9 million total, as noted by Cnet.

The $111 million Chinese opening is the best any Sony film has ever done in the country and it is the second best opening for a superhero movie there, behind Avengers: Infinity War's $191 million. Venom isn't done either; it still has the rest of its run in China and other overseas markets to go, as well as what's left of its domestic run, which pulled in $4.85 million this weekend.

Venom currently sits at $206.2 million at the domestic box office, which still trails Justice League's $229 million, but in terms of total dollars from all markets, Venom has easily surpassed Justice League. This fact might seem like a way to rub salt in Justice League's wounds, but it does tell us a lot about how remarkable Venom's performance has been.

Movie fans that follow comic book films and the box office closely approached both Venom and Justice League with trepidation, the former because of its lack of an R rating and the absence of Spider-Man, and the latter because of the track record of previous DCEU films. Yet it is hard to argue that the characters of Justice League don't have more name recognition and brand awareness than Venom among the laymen.

Justice League also followed the financial successes, if not critical, of Suicide Squad, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Wonder Woman, the latter two of which both crossed $800 million worldwide. So there was an established product to build upon. Justice League also fared better than Venom critically, but audiences seemed to connect with the parasite in a way they didn't with DC's finest.

Perhaps it is the appeal of an anti-hero or a superhero movie that appeared different than what audiences are used to, but either way, Venom's success is impressive and made all the more so by what it has surpassed, like Justice League.

So while Warner Bros. is seemingly reorganizing and taking things one step at a time following several missteps, Sony's universe and a Venom sequel are likely full steam ahead. Sony's Spider-Verse already had a bunch of films in the works, and now, given the audience reception and box office of the Tom Hardy movie, Sony is in a position to challenge for the #2 spot on the superhero cinematic universe leaderboard.

Story was pretty solid and I know any Potterhead will enjoy this next entry - especially Depp as Grindelwald ;) AND Law as Dumbledore
