Why Bill And Ted's Alternate Ending Was Super Depressing

Why Bill And Ted's Alternate Ending Was Super Depressing

At this point, Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure has become widely-regarded as a quintessential classic of the 1980s. The time-traveling adventure of the two dimwitted metalheads has developed a cultlike following in the years since it debuted in theaters, and the story's endlessly optimistic tone played a principal role in that legacy. However, the movie almost had a far more depressing ending, as Bill S. Preston Esq. actor Alex Winter recently opened up and explained that it would've concluded with the Bill and Ted merely going to prom after presenting their history report in class. Winter said:

We just bring the historical figures back to our classroom. And Keanu just sat on the desk, and watched them kind of talk about who they were. Then we'd go to the prom, and that's the end. Even while we were shooting it, we were kind of depressed.

As fans of Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure already know, that's not how things concluded out in the end. After realizing that the film ended on a decidedly down note by comparison to everything that preceded it, the cast and crew went back to shoot a far more triumphant ending, complete with a concert-esque history presentation and Rufus's exposition of their eventual rise to heroism. And, of course, we got one of the best on-screen depictions of Abraham Lincoln in cinematic history. Check it out, below.

Though the change was eventually made to the ending of the first film, Alex Winter's remarks to EW actually make sense when we look at the franchise as a whole. Bill and Ted's Bogus Journey begins with both of our heroes living depressing lives that don't live up to the promise of greatness suggested by Rufus at the conclusion of the original. It arguably works for the comparatively darker style of Bogus Journey, but one could also make the easy case that Excellent Adventure needs its hopeful and boisterous ending to work as well as it does on a tonal level.

Now it's a question of whether or not we will see that Bill and Ted story continue into the future. Rumors of Bill and Ted 3 (a.k.a Bill and Ted Face the Music) have persisted for years, with several false starts getting in the way of production. In fact, the most recent hurdle for Bill and Ted 3 to get over has been the issue of financing, now that they have an actual script and a director in the form of Galaxy Quest's Dean Parisot. There's a lot of fan enthusiasm to see this third installment come to life, and much of that stems back to the pitch-perfect ending of Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure.

On that note, CinemaBlend will bring you more information about the future of the Bill and Ted franchise (as well as any new updates related to the first two films) as more details are made available to us. There's no word yet as to when we may see the third movie, but for now, you can head over to our 2018 movie premiere guide to catch yourself up on all of the films set to debut this year. Party on, dudes!

This Rotten Week: Predicting Breakthrough, Penguins, And The Curse Of La Llorona Reviews

This Rotten Week: Predicting Breakthrough, Penguins, And The Curse Of La Llorona Reviews
Breakthrough Poster

Hollywood is getting ready to ramp things up in a big way for the summer blockbuster season, but we still have a bit of spring to get through. A nice mix of titles are coming out this week, including a religious drama, a nature documentary, and the latest chapter of The Conjuring Universe. Get ready for Breakthrough, Penguins and The Curse of La Llorona.

Just remember, I'm not reviewing these movies, but rather predicting where they'll end up on the Tomatometer. Let's take a look at This Rotten Week has to offer.

Based on the book The Impossible, Breakthrough tells the story of a teenager who falls through the ice and is trapped underwater for about 15 minutes. He's ultimately rescued and his family is told that his chances of survival are limited, but with the support of the community incredible things happen. It's a new drama with a heavy religious bent, but it looks like one of the rare examples of its type that could wind up with a "Fresh" score.

Director Roxann Dawson has a number of well-received television credits, but this is her first big screen release. Early reviews for Breakthrough are coming in on the positive side of things so far, which is pretty impressive all by itself considering these kinds of titles rarely screen in advance for critics. Some writers so far cite the movie's lack of heavy handedness when it comes to the Christian elements, and that could mean it will appeal to a broader crowd. I think the score dips a little over the course of the week, but not by much.

DisneyNature Films has had incredible critical success with their movies. The last five credits from the studio are Born In China (84%), Monkey Kingdom (92%), Chimpanzee (75%), Bears (91%), and Oceans (81%). Their strategy clearly works, which is to say using the best documentary visuals you’ll see on the big screen to carve out a narrative with a collection of super cool/cute animals . It does kind of seem like it’s an easy game, but who can argue with the results?

Penguins is now continuing the tradition, following around a flightless bird named Steve as he survives in the Antarctic and coexists with his waddle (the term for a group of penguins on land). The movie’s creators appear to offer plenty of antagonists to the fray, namely the other animals trying to kill Steve, but that's all just good drama. So far, critics love it. It’s sitting at 92% with 12 reviews posted, and I don't see the score going much lower. It might tick down a bit, more into the range of the other DisneyNature films mentioned above, but it’s clearly going to be another winner.

As I’ve said many times in this column in the past, it often feels like the protagonists in horror movies are kind of just asking for it. For instance, if you are walking around a house and a door creepily opens behind you, if some kind of ghoul/terror was then revealed would you spend more than 1.5 seconds remaining in said house? Of course not, but these dopes do and that’s usually what drives the next 90 minutes of horror action. Sadly, it looks like the adventure featured in The Curse of La Llorona is the most recent example of this kind of fare.

From director Michael Chaves, The Curse of La Llorona tells the story of a social worker (Linda Cardellini) who gets caught up in some evil happenings because she’s a do-gooder who just can’t leave well enough alone. The movie is part of The Conjuring Universe, which has had it’s share of ups, such as The Conjuring (86%), and downs, with titles like The Nun (29%), when it comes to critical reception. If early reviews are any indication (42% on the Tomatometer) this will fall into the latter group.

Well, last week was interesting to say the least. I had two movies that were clear wins, one near-ish miss, and a rather epic fail that ranks among my worst predictions ever. Let’s start with the worst first. Hellboy (Predicted: 68% Actual: 15%) bombed in almost hilarious fashion. It totally missed the mark, and was nearly universally panned by critics. Writers hated the ultra-violence, lack of story, unevenness of the plot, and came up with new and creative ways to call the movie a piece of garbage.

The two wins were Missing Link (Predicted: 82% Actual: 89%) and After (Predicted: 14% Actual: 13%). The former was a rather easy prediction to make thanks to some early reviews and the previous success of Laika Studios. Critics loved the visuals and the story equally, and this goes down as yet another victory (at least in terms of reception).

Meanwhile, After was such an easy call considering the source material and absolutely ridiculous trailer. The movie looked like a schlocky mess and it delivered as exactly that. I thought about going even lower on the score because of how bad it looked, but I am glad I stopped where I did.

Finally, Little (Predicted: 63% Actual: 49%) finished just out of range. I was probably just a tad too bullish on this movie’s critical prospects considering it was just a body-switch comedy. Going more towards 50% was clearly the right play, and something I should have considered more strongly in the moment.

Next time around we’ve got the big one with Avengers: Endgame. It’s gonna be a Rotten Week!

Jordan Peele Reveals His Cameos In Us And Get Out

Jordan Peele Reveals His Cameos In Us And Get Out
Get Out dying deer

The following contains minor spoilers for Us.

Jordan Peele has been compared by many to Alfred Hitchcock for the way has manages suspense in his films. However, it appears that Peele is similar to the famous director in one other major way, he likes to appear in his own films.

Alfred Hitchcock was known to cameo in most of his major motion pictures. Usually he would just walk across the screen at some point or otherwise appear in a fairly innocuous role. However, Jordan Peele has taken that idea to an even greater extreme. You never actually see Jordan Peele in Get Out or Us as it's actually only his voice that appears in his two directorial efforts. In both movies, he apparently creates the sounds of dying animals. According to Peele...

I've made cameos in both of my films. In Get Out I was the voice of the deer. [makes deer noise] [And in Us] I am a dying rabbit. [makes rabbit noise].

At the beginning of Get Out, the characters of Chris and Rose are on their way to Rose's parents house when their car strikes a deer. Chris goes to investigate and finds the animal slowly expiring in the woods just off the road.

For those of you who have seen Us, you know that rabbits play an interesting role in the story, apparently Peele voices one of them as they die.

It's certainly an interesting and unique way to cameo in your own films. Many directors have followed the lead of Alfred Hitchcock and made appearances in their own movies from time to time. You can be sure M. Night Shyamalan will appear in his films, sometimes in a sizable supporting role. Joe Russo has also appeared in his Marvel movies from time to time.

However, I can't think of a time a director has made a point to appear in two films, but in a way that he would almost certainly never be recognized. It wasn't until somebody asked him about the idea of appearing in his own films that we learned that he actually had.

Check out the interview with Fandango below to hear exactly what Jordan Peele sounds like in his cameos.

We don't know what's next for Jordan Peele when it comes to the director's chair. He's working as a producer of an upcoming remake of Candyman as well as the newest iteration of The Twilight Zone so he may not be directing another movie soon. If and when Peele makes another feature film, I suppose we should all look for a scene in which an animal dies, at that appears to be the place we'll hear Jordan Peele cameo in the future.

Vin Diesel's Fast And Furious 9 Video Highlights 'The Dom Shrine'

Vin Diesel's Fast And Furious 9 Video Highlights 'The Dom Shrine'

Vin Diesel is busy preparing to film Fast and Furious 9, updating fans every step of the way. He's been posting photos of his impressive muscles, in case we forget he's a badass, but even tough guys need a quiet place to reflect. Apparently Diesel's space for Fast 9 is called The Dom Shrine, in honor of his character, Dominic "Dom" Toretto. Here's Diesel giving a glimpse of The Dom Shrine:

As Vin Diesel noted in his Instagram video, one of the Fast movies is always playing in the background of the shrine to keep him in the right mindset:

It's kind of a sanctuary that I go to, to prepare for the next chapter. We created it before I went to London for pre-production in February. So it's been a real blessing to have this quiet space to reflect on the task at hand, and the monumental opportunity to do this next chapter.

Vin Diesel has been posting some thoughts on Fast 9 via social media, but in general we don't know too much about the ninth movie in the franchise. Fast 9 will reportedly start filming in late June at Warner Bros. Studios in Leavesden outside London. Justin Lin is said to be returning as director.

Fast and Furious 9 is currently scheduled to open May 22, 2020, with a 10th movie behind it marking the final film in the series. Jordana Brewster (Mia Toretto) is confirmed to return for Fast 9, but last we heard Michelle Rodriguez (Letty Ortiz) wasn't sure she was coming back, it depended on the script. So official cast and plot updates are waiting in the wings.

For now, we have some deep thought reflections from Vin Diesel, including this look back with Paul Walker (Brian O'Conner), who started the franchise with Diesel in 2001 in The Fast and the Furious.

Sadly, as you know, we lost Paul Walker in 2013 after a horrible car crash. He wasn't finished filming Furious 7 at the time, but his brothers helped as stand-ins to complete Walker's final scenes as Brian.

Fast 8, The Fate of the Furious, ended up getting a lot of attention for the behind-the-scenes beefs. Now we're at Fast 9, and apparently Vin Diesel has fatherhood on his mind. He hinted as much in this photo which he tagged for #Fast9:

Speaking of fatherhood, Vin Diesel seems to be ready to pass his love of fast cars on to the next generation:

Since Fast 9 is still in pre-production, we may have to wait a month or two for more official updates before the start of filming. Here's what we know so far about the movie. In the meantime, we'll keep looking to Vin Diesel to share updates behind-the-scenes. Fast franchise fans can also look forward to the spinoff Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw, starring The Rock and Jason Statham, which opens in theaters August 2.

Shazam! Box Office: The DC Hit Repeats And Bests All Newcomers

Shazam! Box Office: The DC Hit Repeats And Bests All Newcomers

This weekend saw a big number of wide releases hit theaters in a broad variety of genres... but none of them had the power to take down the latest entry from the DC Extended Universe. David F. Sandberg's Shazam! premiered last week with numbers that exceeded expectations, and this time around the film managed to stay at the number one spot courtesy of a modest drop and a general lack of interest in anything new. You can check out the full Top 10 below, and join me after for analysis!

Despite the fact that there were four new wide releases competing for attention, Warner Bros. felt enough confidence in Shazam! to add it to another 89 theaters nationwide this weekend, and things worked out well. It's now the fifth DC Extended Universe release to earn multiple box office crowns, and the second in a row to claim two straight top spots after Aquaman. The movie is now just a few days away from becoming the seventh nine-figure domestic release to come out so far in 2019, following in the footsteps of Captain Marvel, Us, How To Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World, Glass, and The Upside.

Shazam! is not exactly setting records, and it's on pace to become the lowest grossing film released from the franchise so far - but not every title needs to be a ridiculous home run, and with a more modest budget of $100 million it is definitely going to be ultimately considered a profitable success. Internationally, the blockbuster has made $221.2 million to date, and it's likely that it could maintain the number one spot until Avengers: Endgame hits at the end of the month. It's clear that audiences are enjoying it, and positive word of mouth could keep it afloat and slowly filling its coffers in the weeks to come.

While things are looking bright for the future of Shazam!, however, Hollywood on the whole cannot be happy with how things turned out for the rest of the slate. Whether it's because they're saving money for summer blockbuster season, or just didn't like what was offered this weekend, people just weren't big on buying tickets for showings on the big screen the last three days. Of the new releases, the biggest positive was Tina Gordon's Little, which started its run with $15.5 million and a "B+" from CinemaScore, but it fell way short of being able to compete with Zachary Levi's superhero. It's possible that it could continue to do modestly in the weeks ahead, eventually making its $20 million budget a bit smaller, but don't expect it to turn out as a sleeper hit.

It sadly only gets more depressing from here. Shazam! also saw some fellow comic book-inspired competition hit theaters this weekend, but Neil Marshall's Hellboy is shaping up to be a massive flop. Sure, nobody was ever expecting it to make Marvel or DC money, but Lionsgate must have been hoping for something a lot better than the results above. Making $12 million in the first frame for a $50 million movie is seriously bad news, and this isn't exactly a release that is going to get a boost from a positive wave of buzz. Not only have critics been absolutely brutal, but audiences don't seem to be digging it much either - with CinemaScore calculating a "C" grade for it. And in case you were wondering, the totals are far less than the numbers that Guillermo del Toro's two features put up in 2004 and 2008 respectively, when they made $23.2 and $35.5 million in their openings.

Moving down to eigth place, Jenny Gage's romantic drama After also didn't manage to sell many tickets despite the fact that it was released in more than 2,000 theaters nationwide. It's the second less-than-stellar opening we've seen for Aviron Pictures so far in 2019, as they also put out Steven Knight's Serenity this past January. The new release made about $2 million less than the Matthew McConaughey-Anne Hathaway thriller, but also didn't have anywhere close to the same kind of star power. This probably goes without saying, but you probably won't be hearing much about After in future installments of this box office column.

Finally we have the biggest bummer of them all: Chris Butler's Missing Link. Despite positive reviews, the latest release from Laika Studios completely failed to find an audience this past weekend, and as a result it was left barely clinging to a presence in the Top 10 this weekend. It's super sad given that Laika has been producing some of the most jaw-dropping animated features around for years now, but they just can't seem to get any attention from mainstream audiences. The numbers make it the weakest release we've seen so far from the studio, and as a result we could see some seriously sad developments unfold.

Coming up next week we have two new wide releases in store for Wednesady - specifically Roxann Dawson's Breakthrough and the Disneynature documentary Penguins - and Michael Chaves' The Curse Of La Llorona coming on Friday, so be sure to come back next Sunday to see how they shake up the Top 10.

Captain Marvel Directors React To Rumors About Nick Fury Being A Skrull

Captain Marvel Directors React To Rumors About Nick Fury Being A Skrull
Samuel L. Jackson as de-aged Nick Fury talking to Carol Danvers in a diner in Captain Marvel

Marvel fans have always been attentive - just look at all the references the filmmakers packed into Avengers: Endgame to provide us with a rewarding experience after going out to see MCU movies for over a decade. However, there is such a thing as reading too much into a character’s screen time, which is perhaps what fans have done with a bit from Nick Fury’s backstory in Captain Marvel.

In a scene in Carol Danvers’ origin movie, she sits across from a digitally de-aged Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury as he attempts to convince her that he’s not a shapeshifted Skrull. As they get to know each other, Carol asks him to “name a detail so bizarre a Skrull could never fabricate it” to which Fury opens up about his inability to eat diagonally-cut toast.

The answer sparked a theory when fans referenced a scene in Avengers: Age of Ultron in which Fury is at Hawkeye’s farmhouse, makes himself a sandwich and then cuts the bread diagonally!! So obviously, fans think present-day Fury is a Skrull in disguise.

In a recent interview with ET, the Captain Marvel directors were asked to address the theory and here’s what they said:

Anna Boden: Well, there are two options here. Either Fury became a Skrull or he got over his weird fear of diagonally cut toast, and we'll never know the truth. [Laughs]

Ryan Fleck: He actually became okay with people calling him Nick. So, you know, either he's a Skrull or he just changed, like we all do.

Does anyone else feel like they’re trying to confuse us more? The pair of directors do bring up a good point; Nick may have just changed his mind about diagonally-cut toast between the ‘90s and Age of Ultron, just as he became a more hardened as the years went on. However, the change in his demeanor is much of the reason why fans believe Fury is really a Skrull.

Another supporting idea for the Fury Skrull theory is that four of them landed on the beach in Captain Marvel and only three were ever seen again. Could it be true? The Skrulls did end up to be the good guys in the Kree-Skrull war, but maybe they wanted to be behind the Avengers Initiative? Wouldn’t that be quite the plot twist! The question would then be what happened to the real Nick Fury we met in Captain Marvel? Maybe it would explain why he never called on Carol for help in the previous Marvel films before Endgame.

Or perhaps this is just a random situation that the MCU forgot to fact check before the release of Captain Marvel. It is a pretty deep cut (pun intended) that most fans would not have noticed or remembered upon Fury bringing it up.

Maybe we'll get some answers when Samuel L. Jackson reprises his role as Nick Fury in Spider-Man: Far From Home, coming to theaters on July 2.

Why Ant-Man Was Originally Team Iron Man In Captain America: Civil War

Why Ant-Man Was Originally Team Iron Man In Captain America: Civil War

Avengers: Infinity War has been out for a month and change, and is certainly one of the most ambitious and expensive movies of all time. While Marvel fans were eager to see the shared universe's heroes and villains unite against Thanos, it wasn't long ago that Captain America: Civil War was the biggest crossover movie. That film was basically a test run for The Russo Brothers' ability to juggle a ton of characters, as most of the MCU's heroes faced off against each other in an epic tarmac battle. While the lines were drawn in Civil War, it turns out that Paul Rudd's Ant-Man wasn't always going to be on Team Cap. As writers Chris Markus and Stephen McFeely recently revealed, Scott Lang was going to be on Iron Man's team if Sony didn't give Marvel the rights to include Spider-Man. As they told it,

McFeely: [Tony Stark] would recruit somebody else. He probably recruits Ant-Man, I think would be that idea. Well, we had a section where you could recruit somebody, right?Markus: [Tony] actually went to San Francisco. It would not have been as cool.McFeely: I believe [Scott] was watching his daughter play soccer. It wasn't very good.

While the writers of Civil War and Infinity War may have had a back up plan in mind, it looks like they were really hoping Spider-Man would be introduced in the MCU. Luckily it happened, and Tom Holland's Peter Parker became an instant fan favorite, despite having a relatively small role in the Captain America threequel.

Stephen McFeely and Chris Markus' comments about Civil War come from their recent appearance on Kevin Smith's podcast Fatman on Batman. The duo have been very involved in the Marvel Cinematic Universe over the years, writing all three Captain America movies and Thor: The Dark World before eventually working on Phase Three's Avengers movies.

The duo of writers certainly had their job cut out for them with Civil War. In addition to crafting a story for its title character, they also had to work with the other members of The Avengers, as well as introduce two new heroes. Spider-Man and Black Panther both made their debut in the threequel, ultimately taking Tony Stark's side in the titular conflict. This allowed for Paul Rudd's Ant-Man to join Team Cap, which is arguably more his style. The guy is a professional criminal; he doesn't seem like the type to enforce The Sokovia Accords.

While Ant-Man was noticeably absent from Infinity War (because of parole?) he'll make his highly anticipated return to the MCU in Ant-Man and the Wasp. The character will finally be able to be his ultra quirky self, while also teaming up with Evangeline Lilly's Wasp.

Ant-Man and the Wasp will arrive in theaters on July 6, 2018. In the meantime, check out our 2018 release list to plan your next trip to the movies.

7 Robert Pattinson Movies That Prove He's More Than Twilight

7 Robert Pattinson Movies That Prove He's More Than Twilight
Robert Pattinson - Cosmopolis

Yesterday, much to the surprise of the Internet, it was announced that Robert Pattinson was the frontrunner to play The Dark Knight himself in Matt Reeves' upcoming superhero film, The Batman. Opinions were varied, as they often are online, but there were certainly many people who were quick to praise the casting decision, particularly the folks who have been keeping tabs on Pattinson's diverse, unique and anomalous career choices of late. Portraying Batman would certainly be a departure from the parts he's played these past eight or more years, but many filmgoers expressed great interest in the decision.

But naturally, there was also ridicule directed towards Robert Pattinson. Since the actor is still best known — at least to some — for his often-mocked role as Edward Cullen in the uber-popular romantic vampire franchise, The Twilight Saga, there were online commenters who decided to dust off their old 2010 jokes and dismiss the young performer for his work in the decade-old fantasy series. And while Pattinson's work in that franchise paved the way for his career today, to suggest that his performance in those four films is his only body of his work would be a tremendous oversight.

Since his departure from The Twilight Saga, Robert Pattinson has gone on to define himself as an exceptionally gifted and dynamic young actor, filled with great versatility, depth, nuance and range. In this article, we'll take a look at the seven Robert Pattinson movies that prove he is much bigger than his work in the The Twilight Saga and hopefully prove to audiences that Pattinson has what it takes to play the iconic Caped Crusader in this film.

Good Time

In the gritty crime drama Good Time, Robert Pattinson plays Connie Nikas, a bank robber who finds himself in an unsuccessful heist with his mentally disabled brother and turning to extreme and drastic measures when his sibling is taken into custody. It's the type of role that puts you through the running shoes of its main protagonist, forcing the audience to live through one intensive and deeply stressful situation after another as you follow this character through the muck of his own making — and ultimately his own personal unwinding.

It's a film that requires complete and total investment in its central character, a morally grey (at best) person who ultimately puts everyone's lives in danger for his own personal well-being. As you would expect, Good Time's title is intentionally misleading. Capturing the live-wire intensity of other New York-based crime stories of the '70s, it showcases Robert Pattinson as a man of great potential, capturing the same high-level of emotional intensity that was seen in Al Pacino and Robert De Niro before him. It's a stunning performance and a commendable showcase for how Pattinson can find himself in the thick of crime before his turn as The Dark Knight.

High Life

In Claire Denis' challenging, confounding and deeply compelling science fiction film High Life, Robert Pattinson plays Monte, an ex-criminal who lives alone on an abandoned space vessel with his baby daughter, trying to find his way back to humanity in the dark recesses of space. A film that prides itself on being sparse., yet profound in its dark, disturbing commentary on the nature of humanity, it is far from an accessible film and it likely only garnered a wide release due to Robert Pattinson's star power.

Thankfully, Robert Pattinson's sullen, moody and subtly moving performance conveys the mystery and mystique of Denis' film in brilliant and engrossing ways. Conveying the loneliness and engulfing melancholy that comes from such a bleak and isolating situation, Pattinson shows a great talent for depicting weighted morality and tender sympathy — something that will certainly play to his strengths in the role of Bruce Wayne. In this space-based tale, he brings the gravity.

The Lost City of Z

In James Gray's The Lost City of Z, Robert Pattinson took on a rare supporting turn as Corporal Henry Costin. It's a bearded, understated performance that depicts his talents for saying a lot while often saying very little. In a tale about a British explorer searching the world's end for a lost city that might not even exist, Pattinson's Henry Costin is caught in the midst of this dangerous and potentially fruitless exposition, and much like the character he played, he needed to commit to the part. The actor dropped 35 pounds for the role, which proves that he'll change his weight and shape drastically in order to play a part. That's obviously something that will be mandatory when he needs to hit the gym to build up his muscles for Batman.

But in addition to changing his weight and figure, Robert Pattinson truly got immersed into the character's time period. His mannerisms, clothes, affect and persona are all true to fit the cartographers of that time period. It's a meticulously crafted performance, and one that showcases the actor full-fledged willingness to dive head-first into the roles he plays and the characters he embodies. Much like these explorers at their wit's end, Pattinson's not afraid to explore the full recesses of his characters, even if it might lead to madness.

Damsel

For the most part, Robert Pattinson has chosen to lend his talents to serious dramas, often playing brooding characters with a weighted conscious. But the actor has also proven himself to be exceptionally gifted in a comedic fashion, as seen in the absurdist western dark comedy Damsel. In the role of Samuel Alabaster, an aloof, gold-tooth flaunting pioneer who ventures through the American frontier to get reacquainted with the woman he wants to marry, Robert Pattinson plays a pathetic man with an over-inflated sense of self-importance. As a commentary on toxic masculinity, particularly in a genre that flaunts the notion of tough guys saving the day and getting the gal, it's a role that's meant to subvert expectations and play against tropes.

Despite the inherent cleverness of the premise, however, the role would only work if Robert Pattinson captured that right amount of self-delusion without diving fully into cartoonishness. It's a tricky balance and the fact that Pattinson pulls it off, particularly since we've never seen a performance like this from him before. It reminded me a lot of Robert De Niro in The King of Comedy, particularly with Good Time being Pattinson's Taxi Driver. And if you remind me of Robert De Niro in his prime, you must be doing something or another right. With Damsel, Pattinson makes it all the more apparent that his talents range — much like the wandering desert — far and wide.

The Rover

In the bleak and morose Australian dystopian drama The Rover, Robert Pattinson had no simple task. Left to act alongside the great Guy Pearce for nearly the entirety of the film, in a time when people weren't exactly willing to take the actor seriously just yet, Pattinson had an opportunity to prove his talents as the slack-jawed, mostly empty-headed wanderer Rey. And thankfully, he lived up to that challenge — and then some — with this film.

In a film that's defined by its sullen thoughts on the emptiness of life upon the wipeout of humanity, Robert Pattinson's performance is filled with life. He captures a wide array of mannerisms and ticks that showcase an early glimpse into the actor's full willingness to engulf himself into a character. It's a stunning early display for the rising performer, and it was at that point when I recognized Pattinson's potential to be a truly great modern actor.

The Childhood Of A Leader

In Brady Corbet's commanding directorial debut, The Childhood of a Leader, Robert Pattinson doesn't take the center stage. Instead, he plays the role of Charles Marker, a friend of a wealthy family who has found himself on unstable ground. In a film that shows the rise of a diplomatic sociopath from a young age, Pattinson's sorrowful, emotionally and vulnerable performance is a rare beckon of humanity when such a notion becomes lost throughout the runtime. And that humanity is lost when the film paves the way for a dual performance by Pattinson at the very end of the film — one that is, without diving into spoilers, completely chilling.

Through a wordless performance that nevertheless captures its intended intensity, Robert Pattinson's menacing final minutes of this film showcase a whole new side of the actor that was rarely seen before. Even when, you know, he was playing a vampire and whatnot. It shows that Robert Pattinson has the power to command your attention — and your fear — through just a deep-eyed glance. It's a short glimpse into a side of the actor we never saw before, but we might soon see again. And that'll certainly come in handy playing Batman, particularly when he needs to strike fear into a few foes.

Cosmopolis

Based on the same-named novel by Don DeLillo, Cosmopolis isn't the most well-known or acclaimed title on Robert Pattinson's resume. The film itself drew mixed notices, and there are some folks out there who view it as a lesser film from director David Cronenberg's late period. While the movie itself isn't a personal favorite of mine either — no offense to Cronenberg, but it's a little too lethargic for my taste — Cosmopolis is nevertheless the film that makes it easiest to see Robert Pattinson in the role of Bruce Wayne, and the one I would show to prove that he has what it takes to sell it.

Through the eyes of Eric Packer, 28-year-old billionaire who wanders around Manhattan with no clear sense of direction or purpose as he inquires the meaning of life from others, Cosmopolis follows Pattinson at a turning point — both for the character and the actor himself. As Eric Packer finds himself at the point of self-destruction, deluded by wealth and no defined morality, the desire to make a drastic change in his life begins to overwhelm him. While that energy is used for ill-moral purposes in this film, it could easily be channeled as a beckon for hope or change in a city on the brink of collapse and filled with corrupt villains and wide-spread mayhem. Through that look in his eyes that screams for change, Cosmopolis might not be the most likely movie to suggest someone should play a superhero, but for me, it's the role that makes the casting decision make complete, total sense.

It's natural for the internet to be spectacle, especially when it comes to superhero properties. People often forget that Michael Keaton's casting as Batman in 1989's Batman was wildly disdained before audiences finally had a chance to see the actor in the role. Additionally, there were several people online who couldn't see Heath Ledger in the role of The Joker in The Dark Knight, with some folks making several jokes in poor taste about his acclaimed performance in Brokeback Mountain.

The jury is still out regarding whether or not Robert Pattinson will make a good Batman. Hell, it's not even official yet that he got the part. Nevertheless, if he does agree to play the role, these seven movies prove he has the talent and capability to rise to the challenge and pull it off. Twilight haters be damned.

Godzilla: King Of The Monsters Cast Can't Stop Debating The Monster's Sex

Godzilla: King Of The Monsters Cast Can't Stop Debating The Monster's Sex
Godzilla lighting up the sky with his atomic breath

For those with less free time on their hands, it may come as a surprise to hear that Godzilla’s sex is actually the source of much speculation and fierce debate. Is the monster that has been gracing cinema screens for 65 years male, female, or perhaps something else entirely? With Godzilla: King of the Monsters now in theaters, it is only natural that the cast of the latest film weighs in on this important topic and you’ll see that Vera Farmiga and Kyle Chandler had differing views.

Farmiga: Hands down it’s a male. I know the ‘A’ at the end of the name throws it. But he’s King. He’s not Queen of the Monsters. Mothra’s Queen.

Chandler: I’m saying those are semantics. I have a different view on it. I think it’s possible it’s a woman. I don’t know, I’m just not sure yet. Where did Baby Godzilla come from? This is something my wife and I had a full conversation on this morning. It’s a possibility, but it’s not a certainty.

Farmiga: But you know what? He’s sort of a hybrid himself. He’s amphibian and reptile.

I love that these two have such strong opinions on the topic of Godzilla’s sex and have actually given it some thought. Like Jason Lee’s Brodie Bruce discussing superhero sex organs in Mallrats, people want to know what parts this fictional monster has and how they work. Kyle Chandler and Vera Farmiga both make valid points too.

Vera Farmiga applies Occam’s Razor, opting for the simplest answer, which is that king is usually a title given to a male monarch or sovereign and because Godzilla is the King of the Monsters he is therefore male. If he was a female he would be Queen of the Monsters. But since that position is taken by Mothra, and there aren’t two queens, the logical assumption is that Godzilla is a dude-monster.

Kyle Chandler, however, views this argument as dealing only in semantics. And he isn’t allowing labels like ‘king’ and ‘queen’ to narrow his understanding of Godzilla’s sex. Instead he thinks there’s a solid chance that Godzilla is a girl, but he isn’t willing to deal in absolutes and is still puzzling out the question in his head.

The ever-relatable Kyle Chandler even told Yahoo Entertainment that he had a whole conversation with his wife about the subject. Which is quite hilarious to think about Emmy award-winning actor Kyle Chandler having a conversation with his wife over breakfast about the sex of a fictional giant lizard. Celebrities folks, they’re just like us.

He makes an interesting point about where baby Godzilla came from. Now if he’s talking about 1967’s Son of Godzilla, the creature Minilla was adopted by Godzilla and was not his actual progeny.

But the question can be viewed another way, as in where did the Godzilla in the film come from? If Godzilla had a mother it is possible that Godzilla too is female. These are titans and their evolution and biology are not fully understood, so it isn’t necessarily as simple as, to paraphrase Jurassic Park’s Dr. Ian Malcolm, just pulling up Godzilla’s skirt to check.

There’s also the possibility that Godzilla isn’t strictly male or female. Maybe he’s asexual like dragons in Game of Thrones are suspected to be, and he can be whatever he needs to be. Vera Farmiga raises this possibility by mentioning his amphibian traits.

So maybe Godzilla uses asexual reproduction like the parthenogenesis seen in some frogs and salamanders. Or maybe he can spontaneously change his sex like some frogs. There are also slugs with both sex organs, and some rare instances of birds and butterflies born half male and half female. Basically there are lots of possibilities if you want to apply real world biology to a fictional creature.

King of the Monsters actor Ken Watanabe refers to Godzilla as a ‘he’ and director Michael Dougherty also says that the monster is a boy-- so Vera Farmiga seems to be in the majority. For what it’s worth, the original Japanese films referred to him as an ‘it’ and the original actor who played him, Haruo Nakajima, said he had no idea of the creature’s sex.

Male or female, Godzilla makes the case for his kingship in Godzilla: King of the Monsters, now playing. Bohemian Rhapsody Might End Up Getting A Sequel

Bohemian Rhapsody Might End Up Getting A Sequel
Queen at Live Aid in Bohemian Rhapsody

Bohemian Rhapsody was a massive hit however you define it. The film became the most successful box office musical biopic of all time. It won a slew of awards, culminating in a Best Actor Oscar for Rami Malek's performance as Queen lead singer Freddie Mercury. It's exactly the sort of movie that you would expect Hollywood to make a sequel to, and while you might have thought that wasn't an option here, apparently that may not be where things stand.

Rudi Dolezal, a man responsible for filming several Queen music videos over the years recently told Page Six that there is actually serious discussion going on within the "Queen family" regarding the idea of doing a sequel to Bohemian Rhapsody that would pick up after the Live Aid appearance that ended the original movie.

This technically isn't the first time we've heard reference to a potential sequel. Brian May, Queen guitarist and producer of Bohemian Rhapsody, made comments to that effect several months ago. Although, it didn't really seem like he was being serious. If felt like he was having fun with the idea based on the success the movie was happening. These comments certainly don't sound like they're joking.

It needs to be said that it's very possible there was a miscommunication or a misquote here and the idea of a sequel to Bohemian Rhapsody may not be quite as possible as it seems. It does seem like an odd decision.

Bohemian Rhapsody left the story in a pretty good place that certainly doesn't require a sequel. The entire film was framed about the triumphant return of Queen to Live Aid, and we saw that. Afterward, we got all the details of what happened afterward in on screen text.

Turning the rest of Freddie Mercury's life into a second film may be a bit harder than simply picking up where the first movie left off. Bohemian Rhapsody covered a lot of ground chronologically speaking, a lot more than a sequel would have to work with. The original film also made some pretty significant changes to the Freddie Mercury timeline for dramatic purposes, changes that would then have to become part of any sequel. This would likely make the follow up significantly more historically inaccurate, since it would have to assume things like Freddy's AIDS diagnosis was known to the entire band for years.

Still, it's far from shocking if there are serious conversations currently going on about how a sequel might fly. Nobody wants to let the success of one movie just sit there by itself when an opportunity for more success seems guaranteed. The first Bohemian Rhapsody was a hit with audiences and awards despite lukewarm reaction by critics, so there's no fear of bad reviews here.

If the new movie has enough big Queen performance set pieces, it will likely satisfy the audience that wants it.

Black Widow’s Big Avengers: Endgame Scene Originally Went Down Differently

Black Widow’s Big Avengers: Endgame Scene Originally Went Down Differently
Widow and Hawkeye in Endgame

Spoilers ahead for Avengers: Endgame

Avengers: Endgame may have already been in theaters for weeks, but the public hasn't recovered from from the film's wild events. The Russo Brothers masterfully brought the blockbuster to theaters, in a story that balanced character-driven story with epic action. But Endgame went through quite a few changes before finally arriving theaters, including Black Widow's story.

Black Widow has been the soul of The Avengers since early in the group's formation, sharing an intimate bond with all of the OG members. So her sacrifice to procure the Soul Stone was fitting and emotional, as was the tension between she and Hawkeye as they tried to stop each other. But it turns out that the Soul Stone sequence in Endgame could have contained even more action, with Thanos and his forces arriving to stop the Avengers. Endgame editor Matthew Schmidt recently revealed this, saying:

On script and what we first shot was an excellent scene. Thanos and his soldiers show up on Vormir and a small battle ensues between them and Natasha and Clint. Natasha decides to run off the cliff. Clint tries to stop her while also fending off the attack.

Well, that's a different type of heartbreaking. Because while Natasha was always meant to sacrifice herself for the Soul Stone, the journey toward her death changed throughout the course of Endgame's development. In the theatrical cut, Hawkeye and Black Widow were left to ponder Red Skull's comments, and decide who should end up jumping in order to complete the Time Heist. But it originally included the duo being attacked by Thanos' forces, adding in an extra level of drama and action to the scene.

It may have been thrilling to see Black Widow and Hawkeye team-up in battle one more time in the scene described to Business Insider, but I think that the correct version of Endgame's Soul Stone scene was ultimately in the theatrical cut. Cutting out the threat of Thanos and his outriders allowed the scene to breathe, and for Clint and Natasha to have one last tender moment with each other. What's more, the two Avengers scuffling in order to try and sacrifice themselves was unique type of action for the blockbuster.

Related: Avengers: Endgame Originally Gave Black Widow A Heartbreaking New Job

Black Widow's death was the first big one in Avengers: Endgame, and showed what a massive arc the character had gone through within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. She refers to the Avengers as her family to War Machine, and helped to regulate superheroic efforts in the wake of Thanos' snap. She was also the most determined to fight back and reverse the snap-- whatever it takes.

It should be interesting to see what comes next for Scarlett Johansson's Black Widow. While Hulk wasn't able to bring her back with his snap, the character will finally get her own solo movie in Phase Four. Smart money says it'll come in the form of a prequel, finally revealing Natasha's sordid past. ScarJo's contract with Marvel is also up with Endgame, so the actress should get a serious pay bump for another appearance.

You can watch Black Widow's sacrifice in Avengers: Endgame, in theaters now. Be sure to check out our 2019 release list to plan your next trip to the movies.

Could Captain Marvel Hit A Billion Dollars This Weekend?

Could Captain Marvel Hit A Billion Dollars This Weekend?
vers in captain marvel

Captain Marvel has gone higher, further and faster than many of Marvel’s other superheroes, at least where box office is involved. The movie is already well over the $900 million week after hitting theaters earlier this month, but will it be able to hit 1 billion this weekend? It’ll be close.

First and foremost, as of March 25, Captain Marvel has already pulled in a whopping $914 million dollars worldwide (via Box Office Mojo). Box office numbers typically slow down earlier in the way and pick up closer to the weekend, so once Monday and Tuesday’s numbers are official, I’d expect it to add to the tally but not get us close to the billion dollar mark yet.

Which brings us to this weekend. Domestically, Captain Marvel is facing the behemoth that is Jordan Peele’s Us. Disney itself will also enter a bit of competition into the fold this weekend with its live action Dumbo remake spearheaded by director Tim Burton.

If you’d like to see the full list of releases so far in 2019, we have you covered.

Last weekend, Captain Marvel earned $35 million domestically, which was definitely enough for second place, but earned well below Us, which opened to $70.3 million. It’s likely that Captain Marvel’s numbers will drop domestically again, although it should do well enough that it should make a few million to add to that over $900 million total.

The worldwide box office has contributed much of the box office intake for Captain Marvel and that likely will continue into the weekend. However, Captain Marvel has already previously opened in most major markets, including China.

It has also opened in Mexico, South Korea, The UK, Brazil, France and other markets, so there’s not a lot of room for the movie to continue to squeeze out top dollar overseas. Just like the domestic market, as new and exciting movies hit theaters, the audience for older movies wanes.

The question really isn’t if Captain Marvel will be able to hit $1 billion worldwide, but when. There’s a chance the Marvel flick flies to that record this weekend, which would mean the movie has hit that box office milestone before it has even been in theaters for a whole month. However, it’s going to be close, and I think it may fall short over the weekend.

The good news is that once Captain Marvel hits a billion, it will actually be the seventh Marvel flick to achieve that massive number, so it will be big news when it happens. It should also be the start of a giant box office tally for Marvel in 2019, as the studio also has Avengers: Endgame coming. That movie should open high and could go on to make over $2 billion for Disney. Spider-Man: Far From Home and it's complicated infrastructure with Sony and Disney will also be released in 2019.

If you’d like to see the movie get there sooner rather than later, you can always catch it in theaters this weekend, perhaps even for a second or third time.

The Predators Jake Busey Responds To Sex Offender Being Cut From The Movie

The Predators Jake Busey Responds To Sex Offender Being Cut From The Movie

After a slew of unsatisfying Predator sequels, Shane Black's new take on the franchise offers fans a promising entry for the franchise. The talented director has brought well-received comedic-action flicks such as Kiss Kiss Bang Bang and The Nice Guys to the screen in the past. As such, Black's role helming the new showdown is an exciting aspect of the upcoming release. But before it reached audiences, a small change had to be made to the film, as Fox deleted a scene that included a registered sex offender. This happened after actress Olivia Munn brought the information to the attention of the studio. Cast member Jake Busey recently addressed the incident at the Toronto International Film Festival, where the movie premiered. Here's what he said:

That was a sad thing. It's a sad thing. None of us were aware of anything like that and that's just not something that, really in any job, you really don't know or do background checks to that extent. So, you just don't know these things about people's past. You know, the government let him...you know, Canada is one of the toughest governments to cross the border. I've had a great difficulty getting across the border in the past, but you know, it's just odd. It was a surprise.

In the interview with Variety, Jake Busey's comments illustrate how the cast and crew of The Predator were unaware that actor Steven Wilder Striegel was a registered sex offender during production. Striegel originally played in a short three-page scene alongside Olivia Munn, where he reportedly hits on her character, Casey Bracket. Munn approached Fox in mid-August of the circumstances, leading them to delete the scene from The Predator within 24 hours. Striegel served six months in jail in 2010 after pleading guilty to charges regarding attempts to lure a 14-year-old girl into a sexual relationship via the internet.

While Olivia Munn and the rest of the cast has expressed their surprise of the situation, director Shane Black has been friends with Steven Wilder Striegel for 14 years, and was aware of the facts of the actor's history. Striegel also previously was cast in Black's other films including Iron Man 3 and The Nice Guys. Shane Black apologized when the information was released to the public, admitting that he "personally chose to help a friend" by casting him in the project but showed understanding in the disapproval of his decision.

Jake Busey's comments comes as The Predator gets ready for its upcoming wide release. After its premiere at Toronto International Film Festival, critics have praised it for its fun, hyper-violent and hilarious approach to the franchise, with CinemaBlend's own Sean O'Connell calling it the sequel fans have been waiting for. The Predator is expected to have a strong opening when it hits theaters on September 14.
