Triple Frontier’s Big Twist Even Surprised Its Premiere Audience

Triple Frontier’s Big Twist Even Surprised Its Premiere Audience
Triple Frontier the team walks through the jungle armed and with bags full of money

Warning: SPOILERS for Netflix’s Triple Frontier are in play. If you haven’t seen the film yet and would like to remain unspoiled, please bookmark this story and return once you’ve caught up.

Towards the end of Triple Frontier’s second act, a pretty big death occurs. As the team of veteran warfighters are making their way through the treacherous mountains that stand between them and their rich escape, a surprise shooter gets the jump on the team.

That shooter is the son of a farmer murdered by Ben Affleck’s Tom “Redfly” Davis, and as fast as you can say “karma,” the young man sneaks up behind Redfly and shoots him in the head. If you thought you were surprised when co-writer/director J.C. Chandor dropped that twist into the film, just wait until you hear about how the audience at the film’s big premiere, courtesy of two of the film’s producers.

During a recent talk with CinemaBlend, producers Charles Roven, Alex Gartner and Andy Horowitz were on hand to discuss Triple Frontier, one of the recent Netflix projects made under their Atlas Entertainment production company. In particular, it was Roven and Horowitz who recounted how Triple Frontier’s killer reveal hit one of the first audiences to see the film. That story went as follows:

Roven: ‘In our premiere screening, the whole auditorium gasped. It was, really, nobody saw it coming.’

Horowitz: ‘As soon as you saw that guy pop up behind [Ben Affleck,] there was just an audible gasp. And then, of course, when the deed happened, I remember people around me just screaming, ‘No!’ It was really quite a moment at the premiere.’

As if surprising audiences watching Triple Frontier at home wasn’t enough, Ben Affleck’s big death scene turned a Hollywood premiere into a setting as interesting as any theater showing a moment of that caliber. Listening to Charles Roven and Andy Horowitz discussing this moment only made the story that much sweeter, as you could tell that they had a lot of fun keeping that big twist secret.

Hearing that the Triple Frontier twist played so well in front of an audience of professional peers is pretty entertaining, but it’s also pretty much a vindication of the request that Ben Affleck made for Redfly’s fate during the production of the film.

During the extensive reworking that J.C. Chandor had done on the original Mark Boal script for the film, Affleck had the idea to sacrifice Redfly instead of an unnamed secondary character. This idea met with the approval of the powers that be, and flash -orward to the finished product, you’re met a tense as hell gun battle in the mountains. It’s also capped off by one of the most surprising movie deaths since Janet Leigh in Psycho.

The shifting rhythm of Triple Frontier’s action-fueled and drama-driven halves of the plot at hand needed a moment to jump start its pulse, so as to shake up the audience. Redfly’s death did just that, and if focus group data isn’t enough to support that, then try the fact that even those who work in the Hollywood industry had their minds blown during that fateful premiere of this very film. A fact that makes any possible sequel talk all the more complicated, because how do you beat a moment like that?

Triple Frontier is currently streaming on Netflix.

Why Palpatine Had To Show Up In Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker

Why Palpatine Had To Show Up In Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker
emperor palpatine in Return of the Jedi

Last week, Star Wars Celebration blew the roof off of the internet with the first look at Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. There is lots to talk about in the new teaser, but the most popular item is probably the return of Emperor Palpatine. The classic Star Wars baddie is making a comeback, and while we are left to wonder exactly how that's possible, it's not too surprising that Palpatine is back. When you think about it, there weren't any other choices for a villain because, well, there's no one else left.

The ominous laugh of Emperor Palpatine closes out The Rise of Skywalker teaser trailer, and director J.J. Abrams later confirmed that Palpatine is definitely back for the final installment of the trilogy. The news caught fans by surprise. Even though Palpatine's return was a popular fan theory for years, it's still nuts to see him actually coming back.

It's an exciting way to close out the saga that began way back in 1977, but once the lights dim down, it becomes increasingly clear that Star Wars didn't really have any other option but to bring Palpatine back.

For starters, the news isn't all that surprising when you consider bringing back the familiar is J.J. Abrams' Star Wars M.O. He directed Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which indulged in plenty of nostalgia. A popular criticism of that film is that it's TOO similar to the Original Trilogy. After all, there's basically another Death Star lead by a creepy old man who appears as a hologram to a masked servant who has family ties to the good guys.

Plus, Abrams is bringing back Lando in The Rise of Skywalker, so extending the invite to Palpatine is just giving the people more of what they want. Critics of this move might say that bringing Palpatine back isn't too exciting and a sign that this new trilogy might not have had many fresh ideas left.

I don't think I necessarily agree with all that, but I do think that this trilogy found itself in a bit of a hole, and the only way out was by resurrecting Palpatine.

To be fair, Abrams and Kathleen Kennedy have said that it was always the plan to bring Palpatine back at the end. The problem with that though is that it's never been entirely clear how much was planned for the story of the three new films. Even though Abrams set up some mysteries, The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson said he was working with a blank slate and had total creative freedom. That doesn't sound like much of a plan.

The Last Jedi, for all that it does right, put The Rise of Skywalker into a pickle because it wiped all the villains off the board. Fans hyped the crap out of Snoke, who turned out to be something of a red herring and killed off pretty easily. He just wasn't that interesting to begin with, but he was the closest thing these films had to an overarching villain.

The other option is Kylo Ren, but he's a circle trying to fit into a square hole. Ren's arc is so tied up in whether or not he'll be redeemed, he doesn't feel like a true villain. He's too conflicted to be the final boss. So, we're left without any villain to take us to the homestretch, unless you want General Hux to get a major promotion.

It's also too late to introduce a new villain. Since it's the final movie, why should anybody care about a character who pops up out of nowhere? There isn't enough for an audience to invest in. His connection to the main characters would be tenuous at best, and it's tough to see any motivations that would be compelling enough to get attached to.

Palpatine, however, fixes all of those problems. He's a familiar character, so people already know his whole deal, and the movie doesn't have to waste time introducing him. Plus, he has the nostalgia factor, and it's a lot more fun to talk about him than it is some new guy.

While Palpatine's motivations are thin (he wants to rule the galaxy because he wants to), that works for him. Star Wars is pretty black and white, and Palpatine is meant to be the face of ultimate evil. He's a cruel bastard and not much else, but that's also the point. He's not meant to be more than that, so it's even easier to get on board with his return because it doesn't come with a lot of complicated baggage.

Additionally, Palpatine is THE Star Wars bad guy. If The Rise of Skywalker is meant to close the book on these characters and the story we've come to know, it's fitting that he's the final obstacle. He's technically been the main villain of two trilogies and he's the architect of almost all the bad stuff that happens in Star Wars. Why not bring him back for one last go-around?

The whole mystery behind how Palpatine will factor into the movie can't be undersold either. There are going to be tons of fan theories and discussions about this topic before the film arrives in December. The trailer has already drummed up a ton of buzz, and utilizing a familiar and beloved bad guy certainly doesn't hurt in the marketing department either.

I suppose it's not very hard to get excited for a new Star Wars movie, but Palpatine has been gone for a long time. There's no shame in being excited that the villain will be back to laugh and shoot a bunch of lightning one last time.

I think that it's too soon to say whether bringing back Palpatine is a good or bad decision. It'll all depend on how he's brought back and how he's mixed into the plot. You can argue that it's a lazy and safe decision, but I also think it was the only one the filmmakers could have made. Options are a lot more limited in the villain department after Snoke died and it's too late to bring in a new bad guy. However, the advantage of Palpatine is that we at least have an idea of what to expect.

An Amy Winehouse Biopic Will Begin Filming Next Year

An Amy Winehouse Biopic Will Begin Filming Next Year

From Walk the Line to Ray to I'm Not There to any number of such biopics, there's just something about the lives of musicians that makes their stories translate into compelling films. One musician who enjoyed massive fame and success in her short life was English singer Amy Winehouse. Now the recipient of six Grammy awards is getting a biopic that will begin filming next year.

According to The Wrap, Amy Winehouse's family has signed a deal to executive produce the biopic alongside Monumental Pictures' Alison Owen and Debra Hayward, who will produce. Production is set to start next year. The as-yet-untitled film will be written by Kinky Boots writer Geoff Deane, who will also executive produce.

Proceeds from the biopic will benefit the Amy Winehouse Foundation, a charity set up in the wake of the singer's death to prevent the effects of alcohol and drug misuse on young people. Amy Winehouse died in 2011 due to alcohol poisoning. She was 27 and is now part of the infamous '27 Club', iconic musicians who all died at the age of 27, which includes Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Jim Morrison and Kurt Cobain.

In a statement Amy Winehouse's father, Mitch Winehouse said that although the family was approached about the rights many times, they never felt the time was right to tell Amy's story until now. He noted that now they can celebrate Amy's life and talent. He also mentioned Alison Owen and Debra Hayward's history of producing female-driven stories. Between them, the two have produced films such as Elizabeth, Suffragette, Jane Eyre and the upcoming Mary Queen of Scots.

A24 released a documentary about the late singer in 2015 called Amy, and although it was critically acclaimed, it Amy Winehouse's family had some major problems with it. So this film will theoretically provide a different side of her story.

Anecdotally, it seems like we're in an age of great music biopics, so now does seem like a great time to tell the story of Amy Winehouse. Films like Straight Outta Compton, Get on Up and Love & Mercy have all come out in recent years and explored the fascinating and often chaotic lives of those living rock star lives. This new Amy Winehouse biopic will hopefully continue this trend of quality.

The real trick for this film will be casting and the singing. Amy Winehouse's soulful and sultry contralto vocals made her voice stand out among all the more poppy stars of her era, and capturing that will be important to this movies' success. It will also be interesting to see if this film or any other upcoming music films try and recreate the authenticity that A Star is Born captured by having the actors actually sing live on set.

While you await the Amy Winehouse biopic, there's another biopic about an iconic musician heading to theaters in just a few short weeks. Bohemian Rhapsody tells the story of Queen and legendary frontman Freddie Mercury. That film hits theaters on November 2. For all of the biggest movies heading to theaters this fall, check out our release schedule.

Why James Wan Probably Won’t Direct Another Conjuring Universe Movie, According To Peter Safran

Why James Wan Probably Won’t Direct Another Conjuring Universe Movie, According To Peter Safran
The Warrens cross themselves in Annabelle Creation

James Wan has an impressive history when it comes to launching and contributing to franchises, but he also notably doesn’t stick around in the director’s chair for very long with them. Going back to the start of his career, he’s brought us Saw, Insidious, and chapters of both Fast & Furious and the DC Extended Universe, but of all the direct follow-ups to those movies (a total of 11), he’s only directed two.

This is a trend that most recently continued with the developing Conjuring 3, with Michael Chaves (The Curse Of La Llorona) set to replace Wan after he directed the first two chapters in the series. This was seen as disappointing, if not unsurprising news, but now a bit of salt is being put in the wound, as producer Peter Safran has gone on the record saying that he believes the filmmaker’s time helming Conjuring Universe titles in general is probably at an end:

I don't think he will [direct another Conjuring movie]. That’s just me. My instinct is that he won’t. I think he really left everything out on the field with Conjuring 2. Just being by his side as he made that movie, I feel that he put everything that he'd learned up to that point into that film, from character development to scares to crafting sequences, just everything. I love the movie and I think that he felt like he did it, he really showed people exactly what he wanted to show them. The skills of a filmmaker telling a great story.

The subject of James Wan’s future with the Conjuring Universe was one that surfaced when I joined a small group of journalists to visit the set of the in-production Annabelle Comes Home on the Warner Bros. lot in Burbank, California late last year. After having toured the Warren home and interviewed some of the lead actresses, we had the chance to sit down with Peter Safran and get his thoughts and opinions about the Annabelle trilogy-capper, and it was at the end of the conversation that the Wan question came up.

Peter Safran and James Wan have a built a solid working relationship, having made six films together in the last six years, so when the former expresses a particular read about the latter, it’s probably based on strong intuition. Furthermore, he definitely has a great beat on what the future holds for The Conjuring Universe, as he has produced every title released as part of the franchise so far.

On beyond the fact that James Wan seems to have a certain “rarely look back” perspective, Peter Safran brings up some really great points about The Conjuring 2. That movie is a beautiful and seriously scary piece of work, and one could definitely see why Wan may not feel compelled to return to the universe as a director going forward, instead pursuing other creative endeavors (like, perhaps, the developing Aquaman 2… which hasn’t yet nailed Wan down to direct just yet).

Of course, many in this situation would point out that it’s typically never smart to ever say “never” in this industry, as circumstances change all the time in Hollywood, and tomorrow James Wan could be struck with an idea he feels he must personally execute. Peter Safran most definitely left this possibility on the board with his answer, making particular note of Wan’s close relationship with the horror genre over the last 15 years. Said the producer,

I would be surprised if he ended up doing another one, but you never know. Guys like James, for him scares, it's in their blood. They need an outlet for it at some point, so maybe he is getting it as a producer. There is something very compelling about sitting there just wanting to scare the shit out of people.

Even if he’s not directing, James Wan’s relationship with The Conjuring Universe is as strong as ever, as he has produced every sequel and spin-off that has been made thus far, including the upcoming Annabelle Comes Home. We’ll just have to wait and see what the future holds.

On the subject of the third Annabelle film, it will be arriving in a theater near you very soon, as it is set up to be a nice summer scare-fest with its June 28th release date. Written and directed by Gary Dauberman (who makes his directorial debut after scripting all of the Annabelles and The Nun), the story is set over the course of one night as Judy Warren (McKenna Grace) and her babysitter (Madison Iseman) are tormented by the movie’s titular doll. Patrick Wilson, Vera Farmiga, and Katie Sarife co-star.

This is only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to stories from my Annabelle Comes Home set visit, so be sure to stay tuned here on CinemaBlend over the next few days for more!

How Detective Pikachu May Set The Stage For Major Pokemon Character Ash Ketchum

How Detective Pikachu May Set The Stage For Major Pokemon Character Ash Ketchum
Ash Ketchum and Pikachu in Pokemon: The First Movie

Warning! The following contains spoilers for Detective Pikachu. Read at your own risk!

Detective Pikachu is a great movie, and a wonderful nostalgia trip for those who were a part of Pokemon's original run 20-plus years ago - but there are bits of the film where older fans may have been a bit out of the loop. Those only familiar with the franchise up to the 151st Pokemon may have missed some of the deep cut references to successive games, not to mention been unfamiliar with some of the new species that are prominently featured. It still makes for a fun time at the cineplex, but imagine if there was a movie that focused on the Pokemon of the late 1990s.

Not to get anyone's hopes too high, but there's a possibility something like that could happen now that the new film is a hit. You may have missed it, but Detective Pikachu has a very subtle reference to past stories that very well could tie the movie into the anime world of Pokemon and the franchise's most famous human character. To spell it all out, below you'll find the details behind the reference that some may have missed, and an exploration into how it may set the stage for a popular figure who didn't appear in the film: Ash Ketchum.

Detective Pikachu's Reference To The Pokemon Anime And Pokemon: The First Movie

Detective Pikachu does a lot to establish Rhyme City as a part of the greater Pokemon universe, and surprisingly added a bit that may tie in the movie with the actual canon of the Pokemon anime and Pokemon: The First Movie. The moment comes when Tim, Pikachu, Lucy, and Psyduck explore Clifford Industries' lab, and learn more about the mysterious origins of the Pokemon, Mewtwo.

In a bit of dialogue, it's revealed that Clifford Industries managed to catch Mewtwo after it escaped the Kanto region 20 years ago. In the Pokemon anime, Mewtwo was in the possession of Viridian City Gym Leader and leader of the Team Rocket syndicate Giovanni, who operates in the Kanto region. Giovanni used Mewtwo (who was subdued with electronics) to defeat Ash's rival Gary in a gym battle. Mewtwo escaped shortly after that, which became the basis for Pokemon: The First Movie.

What makes this reference all the more interesting is the revelation that it happened 20 years ago, which is essentially how long it's been since Pokemon: The First Movie was released in theaters. It could be a coincidence, but there's something really intentional about that time frame that seems to show Detective Pikachu is wanting to align itself with the show's original canon.

Why Didn't Detective Pikachu Reference Ash Ketchum Then?

If researchers knew of Mewtwo's escape, then why didn't they know about Ash, Misty, Brock, or Team Rocket? Better yet, considering Tim believed he was going up against one of the strongest Pokemon in existence, why didn't he ring up one of the world's most prolific Pokemon trainers for some advice on how to bring him down?

There's actually a rather simple explanation for this: Ash Ketchum and his friends don't remember their encounter with Mewtwo. The powerful psychic Pokemon ended up wiping everyone's memory following the climax of Pokemon: The First Movie, and the characters resumed their lives as though nothing had ever happened. So, if Ash saw the news about Mewtwo in Rhyme City, he was probably just as shocked and as oblivious as anyone else who may have seen it.

While Mewtwo doesn't make any reference to Ash in Detective Pikachu, there are parts that imply he lived through the events of Pokemon: The First Movie. For example, he seemed far less ruthless and more forgiving of human kind in Detective Pikachu, whereas the version featured pre-Pokemon: The First Movie would've turned all the humans he encountered to stone really quickly. Fortunately, he only had to turn Ash to stone that one time to figure out it was a terrible idea he should never replicate.

Where Is Ash Ketchum In The Detective Pikachu World?

Ash was a little older than 10 when he faced off against Mewtwo, which would make him around 30 years old when the events of Detective Pikachu go down. Like most cartoon characters, Ash is basically ageless in the Pokemon anime, but while that would be an absolutely riveting plot point to tackle in a Detective Pikachu sequel, it feels more likely he would show up as an seasoned Pokemon Trainer played by an adult actor.

Ash travels around a lot, and he's gotten into some crazy situations. If Tim managed to run into Ash in the midst of some big mystery it wouldn't be the least bit surprising, and the two might even join forces. Of course, the question is, is there really a need for Detective Pikachu 2?

It would appear that Tim's issues are largely resolved with his father back in his life. Tim could still have some adventures with his dad and a non-speaking Pikachu sidekick, but that doesn't sound nearly as cool as the general premise. Ash Ketchum would certainly sweeten the deal, but maybe not enough that audiences would sign on for another Detective Pikachu where Ryan Reynolds isn't the voice of the yellow mouse.

Will Detective Pikachu Lead To A 90s Pokemon Film?

Detective Pikachu's mention of Mewtwo's origins could be the link needed for the franchise to take a trip back in time, making a movie that could potentially use Ash Ketchum as a way of telling the origin story of Mewtwo once again. Yes, it would essentially be a live-action remake of Pokemon: The First Movie, but could be completely different than the film with which American audiences are familiar.

For those that aren't aware, the story differences between the Japanese and American versions of that Pokemon movie are substantial. In fact, it's fair to say they're basically entirely separate movies, as the American version of Pokemon: The Movie was heavily edited and had its script changed to cater to American audiences. Had they stuck with the original, Americans could've had a deeply nuanced story about Mewtwo, his existential crisis, and a movie that honestly made the diminutive Mew seem like the true villain.

It's a story far better than what the American version of Pokemon: The First Movie delivered, which essentially stated that fighting is wrong in a franchise where the world's entire economy revolves around fighting. Now, Detective Pikachu has presented an opportunity to tell that story right if it wants to, and the company could retcon a very bad Pokemon feature and give America its first live-action Ash Ketchum in the process. Sounds like a win-win to me!

Should Ash Ketchum appear in the next Pokemon movie? Is remaking Pokemon: The First Movie a good idea? Sound off in the comments below, and be sure to stick with CinemaBlend for all updates regarding movies, television, and pop culture.

The Advice Chris Hemsworth Got About Moviemaking From Tom Cruise

The Advice Chris Hemsworth Got About Moviemaking From Tom Cruise
tom cruise and chris hemsworth

Chris Hemsworth has been in the acting business long enough that he’s worked with plenty of heavy hitters as well as in big franchises like the MCU and Star Trek. However, he also has had the chance to talk to a-lister Tom Cruise about moviemaking in general and he took the opportunity to ask him about what drove him in the business. Per Hemsworth:

I asked Tom Cruise years ago what drove him to make certain decisions on films. He said, ‘I just want people to see my movies. I don’t want to put that much blood, sweat and tears into it, and have it come and go.

"Whatever it takes," right? Tom Cruise is known for a lot of things, but one of them is the work ethic he puts into his own movies, which involves him performing stuntwork other actors may not dare to. He also helps with decision-making behind the camera, and stories about his alleged work ethic came up when The Mummy was a bit of a disaster a couple of years ago.

According to what Chris Hemsworth revealed to Variety, Tom Cruise’s work ethic really fascinated him, leading to a point where Cruise gave the younger actor advice about moviemaking and the work that is put in.

Chris Hemsworth is also team big screen, telling the outlet in the same interview that he believes in the medium and hopes people will still continue moviegoing in droves. He said:

I just love the theatrical experience. I think there’s nothing quite like it, and the industry will change in a big way if we don’t get people to the cinema.

There’s been a pretty big shift in the industry as a lot of key content players have headed to Netflix or elsewhere streaming, just as there have been big advocates for theatrical moviegoing to remain a mainstay. Some have been vocal about disliking the streaming model, but that's not really what's mentioned here.

So far, studies have shown that people who consume media streaming often tend to go to the theater in higher numbers, but what Chris Hemsworth seems to be saying boils more down to wanting to make sure the movies he (and Tom Cruise) makes are good enough that they engage the theatrical audience and keep people excited about going to the movies. It's less of an us and them mentality and more of a what can be done to improve the project I'm on sort of thing.

Still, moviegoing and the movie experience is certain topical this days, with movies searching worldwide for larger audiences and theaters finding creative ways to keep fans coming in droves.

No one who works insanely hard on a movie and wants it to come and go with bad reviews, or possibly worse, indifference at the box office. And while Tom Cruise has not been immune to bad reviews in his career, he does what he can to make sure the final project is the best it could be. That's advice that any actor could latch onto.

You can next catch Chris Hemsworth in Men In Black: International, out June 14. Tom Cruise's next big gig will be in Top Gun: Maverick, out in 2020.

When comparing the underwhelming performance of Justice League to the commercial smash that is Aquaman, one might think the DCEU might be decidedly distancing themselves from a previously-planned interconnected universe. While the studio’s upcoming lineup indicates a move in that direction, it looks like Shazam! won’t be completely ignoring the other DC heroes. In past trailers, we’ve seen a few sprinkles here and there referencing the DCEU, such as Freddy Freeman’s authentic Batman Batarang and when Shazam yelled “Get ‘em, Batman!” when throwing a big doll of the Caped Crusader. The new trailer for China mixes familiar footage with new and hilarious DCEU jokes, and man, do they get us excited for the upcoming release. Check it out:

Well, aren’t these are perfect!! The new trailer was released in anticipation for China’s upcoming release of Shazam! on April 5, which coincides with the domestic opening day as well. While most of the clips aren’t new, the few that are win big at taking a jab at other superheroes in DC’s film universe.

The footage reveals a bit more of Shazam’s face-off with Dr. Sivana in the city, showcasing more stunning action and a hilarious exchange between them. Amidst their big fight, Dr. Sivana proceeds to threaten the hero, but the superpowered Billy Batson points out, they are a mile apart and he can’t hear his "bad guy evil speech." Within the scene, it looks like the movie will cut to a child humming the iconic “Superman Theme” while playing with Batman and Superman action figures, which mirror the actions of Shazam and Dr. Sivana’s fight.

The new China trailer also shows a clip of Shazam looking into a fish bowl and quipping – “I can’t talk to fish, what could we do with that that’s cool?” Freddy responds with, “Maybe command an army of billions in the Ocean!” while gesturing to his Aquaman t-shirt. It’s a funny poke at the underwater hero often being the butt of jokes, well, before the naysayers saw how badass he can be in the recent blockbuster, that is.

These are some amusing jokes to get fans excited for Shazam! which show the franchise isn’t completely abandoning its roots. This is also probably somewhat of a business move for Warner Bros. to market the new hero to Chinese audiences because movies such as Justice League and Aquaman made some good money there – more so with Aquaman, which topped Wonder Woman’s entire box office total of $93 million in just three days in China, before making over $298 million total in the big movie market.

Time will tell where Shazam! stacks up alongside its fellow DCEU heroes at the China box office, but early tracking on the domestic front has the superhero flick making around $45 million during its first weekend. The early positive reactions could certainly help propel Shazam! forward when it comes to theaters on April 5.

Will Goose The Cat Be In Avengers: Endgame? Captain Marvel Hero Is Everywhere Else

Will Goose The Cat Be In Avengers: Endgame? Captain Marvel Hero Is Everywhere Else
Goose the cat in Captain Marvel

We have tons of burning questions in anticipation of Avengers: Endgame next month, but an unexpected one has recently been considered by fans of the MCU. Will Captain Marvel scene-stealer Goose the cat make a comeback in the upcoming film? The adorable Flerken did prove himself to have a "high threat level" in the recent release, and the universe could probably use all the help it can get after Thanos' snap.

Goose was already stealing hearts prior to the Captain Marvel release, as he showed his star power on massive character posters in movie theaters and billboards just about everywhere. Since the movie opened, the Flerken has been the talk of the film and Twitter town too, as the character received infectious smiles and "awws" during showings.

Goose turned out to be quite important to Captain Marvel as well. SPOILER ALERT Not only is the Flerken feline responsible for Nick Fury donning his iconic eyepatch in the future, but Goose also kept the Tesseract safe from harm in his mouth in the final act of the movie, before coughing it up on Fury’s desk during the end credits scene.

Goose has led fans to place the cat in Endgame themselves. Take a look at this marvelous piece of Photoshop work from Twitter user @andyvenom which has gone viral:

There he is looking cute as ever, replacing all the faces of the Avengers stars in the most recent Endgame poster. Cats have quite the track record of playing well on the internet, so Goose being the star of memes following his introduction to the MCU isn't too surprising. But following Nick Fury's hilarious eye reveal, fans aren’t discounting the Flerken’s potential impact in Endgame if he does return.

Will he take on Thanos in Endgame? Maybe…. Here’s an idea from Twitter user @209Andres_:

This is some startling evidence, Marvel fans. Could it be? Do Thanos and Goose have a history? It would certainly be hilarious if Marvel decided to give Goose a larger role or backstory like this in the established universe. Since Captain Marvel is set to lead the MCU moving forward, why wouldn’t her Flerken friend also make some big moves? Here’s another gem from Twitter concerning Goose and Endgame:

Marvel Studios is even highlighting Goose in their marketing for the movie, still in theaters. Check it out:

What could be telling is the studio’s decision to use the quote "Goose deserves a franchise." Will they cash in on giving audiences what they are publicizing that the cat deserves? Hopefully the character will at least get a spinoff (animated?) series in the future, perhaps on the upcoming Disney+ streaming service.

Goose is a character from the Captain Marvel comics named Chewie, though the filmmakers decided to change it to feel more distinctly from the ‘90s era. Flerkens can devour prey with their tentacle-like open mouths, which also contain pocket dimensions.

Do you think Goose will have a role in Avengers: Endgame to meet the rest of the team? Tell us in the comments below.

Simon Pegg Misses George Lucas' Influence On Star Wars

Simon Pegg Misses George Lucas' Influence On Star Wars

In 2012, George Lucas sold Lucasfilm to Disney for the bargain basement price of $4.05 billion, thus launching the Disney era of Star Wars. The new films, while hugely successful, haven't all been met with universal enthusiasm, leading to the belief that something isn't working. Whether it's the release schedule of the movies, the stories being told or the method of the telling, there's something missing. For actor Simon Pegg, that something is the influence of the creator, George Lucas, as he explained:

I must admit, watching the last Star Wars film, the overriding feeling I got when I came out was, 'I miss George Lucas.' For all the complaining that I'd done about him in the prequels, there was something amazing about his imagination. I do feel like his voice is missing from the current ones.

For Simon Pegg, the absence of George Lucas from the new Star Wars films is felt keenly. The creator's imagination and voice are not easily replaced and have proven obvious in their lacking. This has caused the actor to realize that he misses George Lucas being the shepherd of the galaxy far, far away.

This is especially honest coming from Simon Pegg, considering that the actor was in one of the new Star Wars films, playing Unkar Plutt in Star Wars: The Force Awakens. It is, of course, not lost on Simon Pegg how ironic missing George Lucas is, considering how famously critical he was of what George Lucas did with the prequel films.

But hindsight is 20/20 and while the Prequels showed what was wrong with George Lucas' influence, the Sequel trilogy and spinoff films have shown what Star Wars looks like without George Lucas and have also illuminated the things that George Lucas got right.

On The Adam Buxton Podcast, Simon Pegg specifically noted that he felt that he missed George Lucas while watching during the last Star Wars film, though it isn't entirely clear if he is speaking about Solo: A Star Wars Story or Rian Johnson's Star Wars: The Last Jedi. Opinions on those films and the Disney Star Wars films overall are deeply divided, but one of the criticisms of The Last Jedi is that it doesn't feel like Star Wars. Perhaps that intangible quality is what George Lucas brought and that's what's now missing.

It is kind of fascinating how even back in an era before the ubiquity of social media, George Lucas got such vocal hate for the Prequels and was blamed for ruining people's childhoods. Now, George Lucas isn't a part of things and the Sequel trilogy is just as divisive.

We've heard a lot of different things over the years about what George Lucas had in mind for Episode VII, VIII, and IX. Some of them have sounded great and like what you would expect from the story, while others have been quite weird and made some fans glad George Lucas is no longer in charge of Star Wars. It did seem though like George Lucas had an overall arc in mind, which is something Disney clearly didn't when it chose not to use his ideas.

Missing George Lucas' influence on Star Wars is likely part honest assessment and part nostalgia for the past amid disillusionment of the present. While not a great filmmaker, George Lucas' imagination did make him a great storyteller, and it's understandable to long to see him tell stories in this universe again.

This is the first holiday season in years without a Star Wars movie, but fear not, there are plenty of other films worth seeing, check them out in our Holiday Movie Guide.
