One Thing Alicia Vikander Didn't Realize About Putting On Muscle For Tomb Raider
While blockbuster movies are everywhere, there's one subgenre that has always struggled towards success: video game movies. From Super Mario Bros. to Assassin's Creed, bringing gaming characters onto the silver screen has proven extremely difficult. But audiences have certainly responded to the Tomb Raider property and protagonist Lara Croft. Angela Jolie played the role for two films in the early 2000s, which were modest financial successes. Now we're getting a brand new Tomb Raider movie, starring Alicia Vikander. The actress has been open about how much physical conditioning went into the role, although it appears that it was a double edged sword. According to Vikander, the muscle mass went away in just a matter of weeks. She said,
It takes three weeks for you to lose it all. That is the sad bit. I thought I was gonna stay like this for [a while]. Crazy.
After getting into Lara Croft shape, Alicia Vikander was hoping to enjoy her new extra jacked physique. But whatever regimen Vikander was on during filming (I'm going with "Croft-Fit") ended after it wrapped, and the actress ended up rapidly losing her muscle mass. So while we'll be seeing her kick major ass throughout the course of the film, it appears that she's returned to her Croft-less body. At least until a sequel is made.
Alicia Vikander's comments from her recent appearance on The Graham Norton Show make a great deal of sense, given how much goes into physically preparing for an action heavy role like Lara Croft. Vikander was likely on a strict diet, taking plenty of supplements, and working out non-stop. After wrapping production, she obviously deserved to return to normal. It's just that she didn't expect it to happen so damn quickly.
All eyes are on what the Academy Award winning actress will do when Tomb Raider finally arrives in theaters. While once again following the adventures of Lara Croft, the new film feels almost nothing like its predecessor. This is based off the recent video game reboot, which was grittier and combined survival skills and heavy combat with the puzzle solving the franchise is known for.
Indeed, there are almost shot for shot moments from the 2013 Tomb Raider video game present in the trailer for the accompanying movie. It seems the source material is going to be honored, putting Alicia Vikander's Lara in some truly insane scenarios. Check out the below side by side, courtesy of IGN.
I've got goosebumps. Lara Croft has been gone from the silver screen too long, and Alicia Vikander is the perfect actress to bring her back. It's just a shame that she couldn't magically keep all the benefits of inhabiting the character.

Chinese Film Advocates Arent Fond Of Bohemian Rhapsodys Censorship
Bohemian Rhapsody is undeniably one of the biggest hits of the last year. Bryan Singer's Freddie Mercury biopic may have had some controversy surrounding it, but the musical blockbuster ultimately made a ton of money at the box office, and was an Awards Season favorite. Unfortunately, some controversy continues, especially as the project was brought to China for the first time.
In order for Bohemian Rhapsody to hit theaters for Chinese moviegoers, the movie was edited down, with scenes and dialogue regarding Freddie Mercury's sexuality cut. It's a change that drew criticism online, especially as certain moviegoers already thought the movie didn't focus on Mercury's queerness enough. And now film advocates in China are responding as well.
LGBT advocate and cinephiles Peng Yanzi recently spoke to the Associated Press about the choice to edit down Bohemian Rhapsody, and what it did to the movie. The report was:
The cut scenes really affect the movie. The film talks about how (Mercury) became himself, and his sexuality is an important part of becoming who he was.
Aside from ignoring an important aspect of the subject of Bohemian Rhapsody, it looks like these new edits may have affected the film overall. Freddie Mercury's journey in the biopic was about music and self-discovery. And cutting out his coming out process means that a big aspect of that narrative was absent from Bohemian Rhapsody.
Another Chinese moviegoer and LGBT advocate addressed the changes to Bohemian Rhapsody, and how the editing affected the quality of the overall movie. They said:
This kind of deletion weakens his gay identity. Its a bit disrespectful to his real experience and makes the character superficial. There is no growth and innermost being of him.
Bohemian Rhapsody might not have been a gay love story, but Freddie Mercury's sexuality is the unspoken elephant in the room for most of the biopic. Still, there are a few extremely poignant scenes that occur later in the film, as Mercury's starpower is on the rise. His relationship with girlfriend Mary Austin was shown slowly dissolving, and eventually Lucy Boynton's character opens the dialogue about his sexuality. That scene is one of many to get the cut for the Chinese release, and it appears the movie is worse for it.

The above sequence is one of the most powerful and emotional in the entirety of Bohemian Rhapsody. In fact, it's hard to even imagine a version of the film lacking this plot line, and this powerful moment between the two real-life figures.
It should be interesting to see how Bohemian Rhapsody ultimately performs overseas. There's obviously a ton of hype around the project, after taking so many trophies. But will the new edit ruin it? Joaquin Phoenixs Joker Movie Is Eyeing A Deadpool 2 Star
Now that superhero movies are more popular than ever, it's not uncommon to see an actor perform in two different superhero franchises. Sometimes even concurrently! Josh Brolin did just a few months ago when he reprised Thanos in Avengers: Infinity War and then debuted as Cable in Deadpool 2 a few weeks later. Now it looks like Brolin's Deadpool 2 costar Zazie Beetz, who played the oh-so-lucky Domino, may follow a similar path, as it's being reported that she's in talks to join Joaquin Phoenix's Joker movie, which is simply called Joker.
If Zazie Beetz signs a deal to appear in Joker, THR has heard that the actress would play a single mother who catches the interest of the man who will one day become the Clown Prince of Crime. Since Joker is a standalone movie unconnected to the DC Extended Universe, presumably this isn't the first in a series of movies, and thus wouldn't interfere with Beetz playing Domino in the future. Plus, I suspect that if this woman is around whenever this man turns into The Joker, she's probably not long for this world.
Zazie Beetz rose to prominence for her role as Vanessa Keefer in the FX series Atlanta, while her other credits include a recurring role on the Netflix series Easy and the Dean Devlin-directed movie Geostorm. In Deadpool 2, Beetz's Domino was recruited by Wade Wilson to join the definitely derivative X-Force, and unlike her teammates Bedlam, Shatterstar, Zeitgeist, Vanisher and Peter, she made it our of their first mission alive (although, SPOILER alert, Wade time traveled in the mid-credits scene to prevent Peter from dying, among other things). Beetz is expected to reprise Domino for X-Force, but assuming she also signs on for Joker, that adds even more comic book cred to her resume.
No specific plot details for Joker have been revealed yet, but the movie, which is budgeted at around $55 million, is described as a "dark character study," similar in tone to Taxi Driver and The King of Comedy. Unofficially, it's been rumored that Joker will be set in the 1980s and adapt The Killing Joke, the storyline which portrayed the eponymous character as a failed comedian who turned to a life of crime after one bad day. Aside from Joker himself and this single mother Zazie Beetz might play, it was reported last week that Frances McDormand was approached to play Joker's mother, though she passed on the role.
Directed by The Hangover's Todd Phillips, who also co-wrote the script with Scott Silver, Joker will be released in theaters on October 4, 2019, so stay tuned to CinemaBlend for continuing coverage.
