New Novel Sets Up Star Wars Expansion At Disney World

Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge has promised to add an entirely new level of immersion to the Disney Parks when it opens next year. However, it looks like we won't need to wait quite that long to get our first glimpse at the new land. A Brand new Star Wars novel is set to debut later this year and in a newly released excerpt we learn that the story, which focuses on Darth Vader and Grand Admiral Thrawn working together in an uneasy alliance, will take place at least partly on Batuu, the planet that is also the location being used for the new Star Wars land at Disneyland and Walt Disney World.

The novel, written by Timothy Zahn and titled Thrawn: Alliances sees Zahn's most famous creation forced to work with Darth Vader at the command of the Emperor. The two don't like each other much, a fact the Emperor knows all too well, and while the excerpt posted to the official Star Wars website doesn't specify exactly what the two will be doing, it does tell us where they are doing it.

The new Star Wars theme park land, called Galaxy's Edge isn't simply an area full of Star Wars themed experiences, it's actually being designed to feel like you've stepped onto a living planet within the Star Wars universe. That planet has a name, Batuu, and that's where this new novel will see Thrawn and Darth Vader go. What's more, the excerpt reveals that the planet is already known to both Vader and Thrawn. Apparently, the pair had, at some point in the past, unwittingly interfered in one of Palpatine's plans on Batuu.

We know, from the information that has been revealed by Disney Parks that the time period where guests will experience Batuu is much later in the timeline than this novel is taking place, as we know one of the attractions deals with the Resistance and the First Order, not the Rebel Alliance and the Empire. As such, this book will apparently act as a sort of prequel to whatever gets added to the Star Wars universe in the theme park.

It sounds like Batuu will end up with a pretty involved history within the Star Wars universe when it's all said and done. If Darth Vader ever unwittingly interfered in the Emperor's plans, it likely happened when he was still Anakin Skywalker. As such, it would seem Batuu has a part to play in the larger prequel era, as well as a role alongside the original trilogy, and the new trilogy.

It will be interesting to see if any of this historical detail is part of the actual Star Wars land when it opens next year. What sort of larger impact did Darth Vader and Thrawn have on the planet that might still be visible decades later?

Thrawn: Alliances is set for release on July 24, 2018. Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge will open sometime in 2019, though the exact dates have not been announced.

Not only has Tom Hanks voiced Woody in the heartwarming Toy Story films and portrayed Walt Disney in 2013's Saving Mr. Banks, next he's going to emulate children's television personality Fred Rogers of Mister Rogers' Neighborhood in an upcoming biopic. With all the childhood nostalgia Hanks has going on, it's a wonder fans don't cry happy-tears at the very sight of him. Mister Rogers broke ground on television with his kids program about kindness and acceptance from 1968 to 2001. Hanks is the perfect actor to tell Fred Rogers story, and since the film recently started production, we have the first look of him as America's beloved neighbor. Check it out.

While it's recognizably Tom Hanks, he also completely disappears into the look of Mister Rogers, red sweater and all. Considering the amount of biopics Hanks has been a part of in recent years, such as The Post, Sully and Captain Phillips, we wholeheartedly believe in his ability to become a believable Fred Rogers in this upcoming film. The untitled Mr. Rogers project is inspired by a 1998 Esquire article by journalist Ron Junod, called "Can You Say... Hero?" The Americans actor Matthew Rhys will play the skeptical magazine writer who begrudgingly is assigned to profile the television personality. But through the time he spends with Rogers for the article, Junod learns about the themes of empathy and kindness Rogers sought to promote on his long-running show.

The project is helmed by The Diary of a Teenage Girl director Marielle Heller and Transparent writers Micah Fitzerman-Blue and Noah Harpster. The film hopes to send a message of kindness triumphing over cynicism in a time when childhood heroes such as Bill Cosby are being exposed as corrupt. Earlier this year, the late Fred Rogers was the subject of the documentary Won't You Be My Neighbor?, which explored the life and legacy created with the personality's television show. Currently, Jim Carrey is making a comeback as a Mister Rogers-like character on Showtime's Kidding, presenting a darker take on a similar persona.

Mister Rogers' Neighborhood entered the homes of many children's' homes for over thirty years and continues to have a lasting impact on its viewers. In a television landscape full of whacky cartoons and fantasies, Mister Rogers delivered grounded messages about treating your peers as neighbors, standing up for what you believe in, the importance of kids' fears and concerns, and embracing who you are in a positive way. A Movie Is Coming Together About The Me Too Movement And Harvey Weinstein Scandal

In recent months, Hollywood has been making headlines for what's been going on behind the scenes. Now, it appears that the story of Harvey Weinstein is going to move in front of the camera as well. Two production studios have partnered to acquire the rights to the story of the reporters who first broke the story of Harvey Weinstein, which led to a flood of women coming forward regarding other people in power, which became the Me Too and Time's Up movements.

Annapurna, who co-produced last year's Detroit and Phantom Thread, and Plan B, behind films like Moonlight and The Big Short, are partnering to put together a film about New York Times Reporters Jodi Kantor and Megan Twohey, the pair who originally broke the story about the allegations of misconduct against Harvey Weinstein. The focus of the movie is being compared to Spotlight and All the President's Men, as the movie won't be about Weinstein specifically, but will instead focus on the reporters as they investigate the allegations and eventually publish the story while dealing with threats of litigation and intimidation.

Interesting, according to Deadline, the deal for the rights to the New York Times reporters' story has come after the paper made a deal with a production company Anonymous Content specifically to get the stories of its investigative reports turned into film and television projects. It seems that after seeing Steven Spielberg make The Post, about the Washington Post's involvement in the Pentagon Papers, when the New York Times was actually the paper to break the story, has caused The Times to make sure they don't get scooped like that again.

It's far from surprising to see Hollywood look to make a quick turn around on this story. It's still a major headline in the news right now. True stories do well attracting an audience, and the fresher the news the better. Considering how well movies like The Post and Spotlight have been received in recent years, making the focus of the film the reporters rather than the scandal itself also makes a lot of sense. It will give the story clear heroes to root for, rather than simply focusing on the potentially difficult terrain of the scandal. The two reporters shared a Pulitzer Prize for their report.

No time frame was announced on the potential project, even with the rights being secured now there will still need to be a script written before the movie can actually go into production. Still, one would expect this one will be put on the fast track in order to ensure it hits screens as soon as possible.

The Incredibles universe has become one of Pixar's most beloved fictional landscapes, but there are still many questions about this superhero realm that fans continue to debate. One such topic of conversation is the question of how the youngest member of the Parr family got his name, as some have assumed that Jack-Jack is a reference to the Kennedy family. Alas, Incredibles 2 director Brad Bird recently took to social media to shoot down that theory, saying:

So it turns out that Jack-Jack is not a reference to John F. Kennedy Jr. In actuality, the name has a far more personal connection for Brad Bird, as it comes from the nickname that he and his wife gave their middle child, who also happens to be named Jack. We're still not sure if the person who originally posed that question was the one who had bet that it was a reference to the late Kennedy, but whoever bet on it being true now owes the winner some money.

With all of that said, it's not entirely surprising to learn that some fans have taken to thinking that Jack-Jack's name is a reference to the son of John F. Kennedy. After all, the two Incredibles movies that have been released thus far DO take place in the 1960s, which means that it's possible that a fictionalized and animated version of JFK existed at some point on that timeline. Nevertheless, as Brad Bird's tweet bluntly laid out for the fans who posed the question to him, it doesn't change the fact that Jack-Jack was named for a reason that was far more personal to Bird's own life.

The increased emphasis on Jack-Jack as a topic of conversation among Incredibles fans makes quite a bit of sense when we consider his expanded role in the new movie. Though the infant was mostly used as a secondary character when he debuted in the first film, he has since gone on to achieve far more prominence as a member of the Parr family. Essentially used as a Swiss Army Knife of superpowers in Incredibles 2, the baby's increased screen time has largely been hailed as a triumph by many of the sequel's fans.

Now we are left to wonder if we will ever get an in-universe explanation for Jack-Jack's name. Incredibles 2 debuted to a massive box office haul and great reviews, so it's not entirely outside the realm of possibility to imagine that a third film could receive an announcement at some point. For now, however, we're left to come up with our own explanations as to why Bob and Helen decided to call their third child Jack-Jack.

Regardless of how Jack-Jack got his name in the Incredibles universe, audiences can check out his multitude of awesome powers in Incredibles 2, which is still in theaters.
