Rian Johnson's Star Wars Follow-Up Is Building A Phenomenal Cast

Rian Johnson's Star Wars Follow-Up Is Building A Phenomenal Cast

Although Rian Johnson really only became a household names thanks to Star Wars: The Last Jedi, he's been working with great actors for years. Between Brick, The Brothers Bloom, and Looper - his first three films - his record of collaborations include Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Mark Ruffalo, Adrian Brody, Bruce Willis, Emily Blunt. and Jeff Daniels. Now he's putting together the cast for his next feature, Knives Out, and he's made three stellar selections so far.

We only heard first heard about Knives Out at the start of last month, minimal details revealing that it will be a classic whodunit murder mystery, but in the last few weeks we've learned about some incredible talent coming aboard. And without further ado, let's start with the latest, shall we?

Jamie Lee Curtis is the lead in one of the biggest hits of Fall 2018, reprising her role as Laurie Strode in David Gordon Green's Halloween, and now she is set to follow that part up by collaborating with Rian Johnson. Variety reports that she has joined the cast of Knives Out, though details about her character are being kept quiet.

Those who have seen Halloween can attest to the fact that Jamie Lee Curtis can still very much bring it on screen, as she gives a powerhouse performance. It's not super surprising given that she has called Laurie Strode her favorite role, but we still expect to see a big win streak grow with Knives Out.

While there are some impressive veterans populating this ensemble, the movie has also hired one of the most exciting up-and-comers out there, with Lakeith Stanfield signed on to Knives Out to play a detective. Sadly, not much more is known about the part, but we can certainly hope it will be worthy of his talents.

Stanfield only made his feature debut five years ago, but already he has proven to mass audiences that he is a remarkably gifted actor. Everything started with a brilliant turn opposite Brie Larson in the shattering drama Short Term 12, but since then we've witnessed further greatness in movies like Get Out and Sorry To Bother You, not to mention the genius FX series Atlanta.

Also set to play a key role in the ensemble is Michael Shannon, who was also just revealed as part of the cast today thanks to Variety. This is exciting news partially just because Shannon is an immensely talented performer, but also because it seems like such a great fit genre-wise. There are few around who can radiate intensity like him, and that should be perfect for a tense Agatha Christie-style story.

Part of being a talented character actor is working with the best-of-the-best filmmakers, and it's exciting that Rian Johnson and Shannon are now working together. I'm not quite sure if I want to see him play something totally on-brand for him, or something completely new and different.

Set to join Lakeith Stanfield as a detective in Knives Out is Daniel Craig, who was the first actor to come aboard the project. Given that the movie is getting ready to start shooting later this year, it's unclear how it will coordinate with the production schedule for Bond 25 - but given the setup and presumed scale of this project, it probably won't be filming for very long.

It's worth mentioning that Craig has a bit of experience in the murder mystery genre, having previously starred in David Fincher's The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo. We can't say at this point how much further similarities will go from there, but hopefully one area in which they will match is quality level.

Then we have Chris Evans, who is attached to Knives Out in a mystery role. Given the information we have, we can probably rule him out as another detective, but that's really as far as details go.

Given Evans' recent posts on social media, it might wind up being that Knives Out will be his first film to come following the end of his run in the Marvel Cinematic Universe - which lasted for a full eight years. Of course, given the size of the actor's fanbase, and the awesome talent demonstrated during his time as Captain America and in other roles, this certainly will only be the first of many great post-Marvel titles to come.

Next, there's Christopher Plummer, who, per THR, is in negotiations to join the Knives Out cast. Chances are most of you reading this are already well familiar with Plummer, be it from his performance as Captain von Trapp in The Sound of Music, Rudyard Kipling in The Man Who Would Be King or any other number of roles. However, unquestionably Plummer's biggest recent project has been All the Money in the World, where he played J. Paul Getty. Plummer replaced Kevin Spacey, shot all of his scenes just weeks before the movie hit theaters and later earned an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor nomination.

Needless to say an actor of Christopher Plummer's caliber will be most welcome on Knives Out, although like most of the cast, it remains to be seen who he's playing.

The last two years have been eventful for Katherine Langford, between playing Hannah Baker in the Netflix series 13 Reasons Why and starring in Love, Simon. The future was already looking bright for the actress, as she's set for a mystery role in Avengers 4 and will lead the new Netflix series Cursed, but now she can also look forward to appearing in Knives Out, as revealed by THR.

Like everyone else aside from Daniel Craig, there's no word yet on who Katherine Langford is playing in Knives Out, but this movie will no doubt help with increasing her star power.

With production gearing up before the end of 2018, it's very likely that we will get to see Knives Out in its finished form at some point in 2019. Right now the film definitely has our attention, and we'll be sure to keep delivering new details about the project here on CinemaBlend as they become available.

Harvey Weinstein Threatened To Replace Peter Jackson On Lord Of The Rings With Quentin Tarantino

Harvey Weinstein Threatened To Replace Peter Jackson On Lord Of The Rings With Quentin Tarantino

J.R.R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings had already been a literary staple for decades by the time the movie adaptations came out, but the big screen versions of The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers and The Return of the King have also managed to stand on their own as cinematic triumphs. What started as an ambitious film project that took eight years to fully realize resulted in three movies that were widely praised by critics and moviegoers alike. However, if producer Harvey Weinstein had his way with the first Lord of the Rings movie when it was still at Miramax, we would have gotten a significantly different version of the classic Tolkien tale, one which could have seen Quentin Tarantino behind the camera rather than Peter Jackson.

In the new book Anything You Can Imagine: The Making of Middle-Earth, author Ian Nathan writes (via Stuff) that even when The Lord of the Rings was being developed as two movies rather than a trilogy, Harvey Weinstein believed that Peter Jackson had "wasted" $12 million working on such a script. According to producer Ken Kamins, who worked with Weinstein during this period, Weinstein demanded that Jackson turn Lord of the Rings into one two-hour movie, and if he didn't comply, he would replaced with Quentin Tarantino, who Weinstein had already worked with for several years at this point. Shakespeare in Love director John Madden was also thrown in as another replacement director candidate.

The Lord of the Rings movies are certainly among the longer cinematic offerings, but if Peter Jackson had done as Harvey Weinstein requested, several of The Fellowship of the Ring's best sequences and a few of its characters would have been cut. Jackson subsequently received a Miramax memo dated June 17, 1998 that pitched "a more radical, streamlined approach" that would have allowed Lord of the Rings to be told in just one movie, but Jackson knew this wasn't the right course of action, so he contacted Ken Kamins and told him that he and his partner Fran Walsh couldn't make the movie that Weinstein wanted. Fortunately for Lord of the Rings fans, Kamins convinced Weinstein to let Jackson shop his Lord of the Rings treatment to other studios. New Line Cinema expressed interest, and the rest is history.

While a Quentin Tarantino-directed The Lord of the Rings sounds is certainly fun to think about, as a fully-realized movie, I doubt I'm alone in thinking that he wouldn't have been the right creative mind to tackle a project of this scale. Even assuming that Tarantino's love of gore and violence would have fit in since the Lord of the Rings movies are filled with battle scenes, having Gandalf drop f-bombs in every other sentence or Frodo sprinkling in Middle-Earth pop culture references wouldn't have gone over well, not to mention that it would have been less accessible to younger moviegoers.

While it's been a decade and half since Lord of the Rings film trilogy concluded and four years since the last Hobbit movie came out, Amazon is dropping around $500 million on a TV series that will take place before The Fellowship of the Ring and showcase new adventures. While not 100% guaranteed, it's probably safe to say that Quentin Tarantino won't be involved with this project either.

5 Major Questions We Have About Dark Phoenix After That Trailer

5 Major Questions We Have About Dark Phoenix After That Trailer

While the first details about the new X-Men movie, Dark Phoenix, were originally released all the way back in December 2017 that was when the film was still scheduled for release in 2018. A few months later the project was bumped to next year, and it's been silent ever since - but after a long wait we finally got the first trailer earlier tonight. All together it's an interesting bit of footage, confirming the presence of key characters, showing off new uniforms, and offering first looks at the power of the titular villain, but it has also left us asking a number of questions that don't have a clear answer just yet.

After watching the trailer several times, we've singled out five major head-scratchers that we are now left to ponder - including material that we didn't see, connections to previous stories in the franchise, mysterious characters, and more. So let's dive in, shall we?

Where's All The Space Stuff?Dark Phoenix is the second adaptation of the classic X-Men story arc that we've seen in the last 12 years, but there's a very specific reason why fans have been willing to accept it. Unlike what was seen in Brett Ratner's X-Men: The Last Stand, writer/director Simon Kinberg's vision for the new film promised that audiences would get to see a big screen version of the story with all of the cosmic elements still intact. However, one of the big takeaways from the new movie is the fact that any and all space-related stuff is extremely minimal. The footage features the screenshot you see above, as well as a few shots of X-Men characters riding in the cockpit of the Blackbird, but that's really it. Instead, just about all of the material is focused on what happens to Jean Grey (Sophie Turner) after she is exposed to the Phoenix Force. Normally I'd throw out the excuse that maybe the CGI for those sequences just isn't ready for marketing yet, but you have to factor in the fact that this movie was originally supposed to be released in October. It's weird that we don't get to see more of it in the Dark Phoenix trailer, and hopefully it doesn't speak to minimal material in the finished product.

Are They Repeating Elements From X-Men: The Last Stand?Continuing sentiments from above, not only does the trailer de-emphasize the material that will see the heroes travel beyond our atmosphere, but it weirdly even seems to suggest that the film will see material from X-Men: The Last Stand carried over into Dark Phoenix (it's worth mentioning at this point that Simon Kinberg wrote the scripts for both projects). Based on dialogue we hear from Charles Xavier (James McAvoy) and Mystique (Jennifer Lawrence), it definitely sounds like we will be seeing a repeat of the plot that sees Xavier secretly dampening Jean Grey's powers in order to prevent her from being too dangerous. What's interesting about this bit from the Dark Phoenix trailer is that it does continue threads from X-Men: Apocalypse - where Jean Grey demonstrated some Phoenix-esque powers - but that again just makes us more confused about the role that the heroine being exposed to the Phoenix Force in outerspace will have on the story. Thanks to the events ofX-Men: Days of Future Past, Dark Phoenix doesn't really have to have any connection to what was previously established in X-Men: The Last Stand, but it appears that the movie is still going that way anyway.

Who/What Is Jessica Chastain's Character?Admittedly this is a question that we have been asking since long before the arrival of the new Dark Phoenix trailer. That being said, actually seeing the character played by Jessica Chastain walking and talking has reinvigorated discussions and speculation about the role. We know she has long, white hair, and a passionate interest in finding Jean Grey, but beyond that she wholly remains a mystery. There have been many guesses about the character floating around, including the Shi'ar princess Lilandra, and the evil psychic entity Cassandra Nova, but sadly the Dark Phoenix trailer doesn't get us any closer to an answer. There simply isn't enough material featured to allow us to improve our already established educated guesses. Going forward it will be interesting to see if the marketing team ultimately decides to reveal that information to the audience, or if it will be kept as a big reveal only to be shown on the big screen. I was personally anticipating it as some kind of exciting button at the end of this new footage, but sadly that didn't happen. Maybe next time.

Who Are Magneto's Two New Friends?Jessica Chastain's mystery character isn't the only fresh face featured in the Dark Phoenix trailer, as there is one shot in the footage that also reveals two new, previously unannounced characters. Based on what we see in the frame above, it definitely looks like they are mutants who identify with the philosophies of Magneto (Michael Fassbender) - and what's more it looks like they may also be joined by Beast (Nicholas Hoult). It's been previously revealed that Magneto will be living a peaceful life when we next catch up with him in Dark Phoenix, specifically running a mutant commune on the island known as Genosha. He gets thrown back into the world of the X-Men when Jean Grey seeks his advice, and perhaps the two new mutants are followers who come with him as support. It would obviously be a lot easier to identify these mutants if they did literally anything in the footage, but what you see above is all we have right now.

Does Magneto's Jab At Xavier Suggest A New Approach For The Third Act?"You're always sorry, Charles. And there's always a speech." Of all the dialogue in the Dark Phoenix trailer, this bit from Magneto definitely stands out the most. The reason for this is because we have seen what's described happen many times over the course of the movie franchise's 18 year existence. When it comes right down to it, most of the action in the movies comes down to Charles Xavier doing what he can to excuse the nature of man and reason his way to a peaceful resolution. With Magneto's line in the footage, however, one wonders if it might wind up being a meta signal to fans that things in this one aren't going to wrap up the usual way. There is a great deal of uncertainty in regards to the future of the X-Men franchise, and Dark Phoenix may be the perfect project to make a sharp left turn when everyone in the world is expecting it to turn right (particularly in light of the developing Disney-Fox merger). We'll just have to wait and see how it all turns out when the film hits theaters on February 14, 2019.

Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse Just Hit A Box Office Milestone

Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse Just Hit A Box Office Milestone

The last weekend of 2018 was a good one for the box office, with families turning out for the holiday season's biggest films, even if the new releases didn't fare so well. While Aquaman, Mary Poppins Returns and Bumblebee held on to the top three spots, coming in at number four was Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. The acclaimed animated film has now passed a milestone with over $200 million at the worldwide box office.

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse actually grew from its second weekend, making $18 million its third weekend in release. This pushes the domestic total for Sony's film to $103.6 million. Internationally, Spider-Verse earned $27.4 million from 60 foreign markets, according to The Hollywood Reporter. That gives the film a foreign haul of $109.6 million, which, when added to the domestic box office, pushes Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse over $200 million globally.

It's a solid milestone for Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, which cost $90 million to make. Spider-Verse still lags way behind 2018's other animated hits like Incredibles 2, The Grinch and Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation, but $200 million puts it way ahead of 2018's other animated superhero film Teen Titans Go! To the Movies.

A big chunk of Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse's international haul came from China, where the film has made over $45 million, according to Box Office Mojo. That it has performed well in the all-important Chinese market bodes well for the future of the franchise.

It is also encouraging for Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse that its domestic weekend box office grew from the pre-Christmas to the post-Christmas frame. With so many other huge movies out there right now competing for consumers' wallets, it would be easy for Spider-Verse to get lost in the shuffle.

Hopefully the fact that it stayed strong in 4th place and grew in its third weekend is because audiences who perhaps prioritized other movies first are still seeking it out and making time to see it as the holidays come to a close and the New Year begins.

From a pure word of mouth perspective, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse couldn't have much more going for it either. The film boasts near universal critical acclaim and is being hailed as the best superhero movie of 2018 and perhaps the best Spider-Man movie ever. We here at CinemaBlend all liked it so much that it swung to first place on our list of the top 10 movies of 2018.

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse also boasts a sterling "A+" CinemaScore, so word of mouth should be excellent for the film. The animated feature has some runway to work with too. January is a pretty barren month at the box office, minus Glass.

Adults who saw Spider-Verse may be the same audience that will see that M. Night Shyamalan film, but it's a different story for kids. The next big kid-friendly movie that would cater to a similar audience in my eyes would be The Kid Who Would Be King, and that doesn't hit until towards the end of January. Those factors could see Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse add some decent change on top of its $200 million worldwide plunder.

The future looks especially bright for Sony's animated Spider-Man films. In addition to a sequel to Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, a spinoff has also already been announced.

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is now playing. For all of the biggest movies you can look forward to in the new year, check out our 2019 release schedule.
