Blumhouse Is Considering New Scream And Hellraiser Movies

Blumhouse Is Considering New Scream And Hellraiser Movies

This past fall we learned of an interesting potential future for both the Scream and Hellraiser franchises. Sitting down with Miramax CEO Bill Block, I asked if there was a possibility of the two legendary horror brands returning in similar fashion to the new Halloween, and the executive responded in the affirmative confirming that they are part of the new program. We havent heard any real updates about the developments since then, but apparently its something that Blumhouse Productions is game to get in on.

Earlier this month I had the opportunity to speak with Jason Blum for the first time since the release of Halloween, and given the success of his first collaboration with Bill Block I specifically inquired about his interest in new chapters for both Scream and Hellraiser. Blum confirmed that there have been some talks about those particular franchises, and while nothing is currently in active development, it is a road that he is interested in traveling:

Yes, we definitely have [discussed it]. We're looking - there's nothing happening with either one of those things - but we're definitely looking at it, and it's definitely something I'd be open to.

And after Halloween, why not? Michael Myers franchise was in a rather bruised and battered state before director David Gordon Greens canon-altering sequel, and the 2018 movie was hailed as a wonderful revitalization and was a monster box office hit for Blumhouse, Universal Pictures, and Miramax. The film was made with only a $10 million budget, and by the time it was done playing in theaters worldwide it raked in $253.7 million.

Admittedly bringing back classic horror franchises didnt exactly work as a stellar strategy when Platinum Dunes produced a string of them between 2003 and 2010 (including Marcus Nispel's The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Andrew Douglas' The Amityville Horror, and Samuel Bayer's A Nightmare on Elm Street), but its also important to note that we are A) now living in a different filmmaking era, and B) not talking about simple remakes.

Cinematic horror as a whole arguably has more heat right now than ever before, and part of that stems from increased audience engagement, but also from a wider respect for the genre within the industry, and greater interest from talented filmmakers. All of that not only means more resources and energy put towards projects, but also more openness to risk and new ideas.

As they always have been, both Scream and Hellraiser are franchises loaded with potential, though they also have their own interesting complications. In the case of the former, there is the fact that the brand is still active with a television series that is developing a third season, not to mention the fact that all four of the previous Scream films were directed by one man: the late, great Wes Craven. At the same time, however, its such a natural series to bring back, if not just because there is endless meta commentary to be made about the status and progression of the genre.

Hellraiser has also never really fully gone away, with a new direct-to-video feature released just last year, but the overall brand could definitely use the same kind of comeback that Halloween just got. The world Clive Barker created of puzzle boxes and Cenobites is a wonderful nightmare, and all the franchise needs is a filmmaker with an exciting new vision, and resources to give them.

If it isnt clear, this is a development were very interested in following, and while there isnt much forward motion right now, were keeping an eye out for news. Stay tuned for more updates in the coming months/years and also do yourself a favor by seeing the latest Blumhouse creation, Happy Death Day 2U, which is now playing in theaters everywhere.

Ashmore said about his role, "In the first X-Men I had to make a rose for Rogue but that was the extent of the character, so it's cool to see over these four movies going from that to X2—where you sort of see him do an ice wall—and in X3 he finally gets to battle, and in Days of Future Past we're soldiers".

James Gunn's Return To Disney Goes Beyond Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3

James Gunn's Return To Disney Goes Beyond Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3
Rocket in Guardians of the Galaxy - Mission: Breakout

When big news hits, as you might imagine, things at CinemaBlend go a little bonkers. Everybody goes slightly crazy as we all try to make sure we have all our bases covered. Things went crazy like that last summer when the word came down that Disney had dropped James Gunn from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, and they went that way again just now as the news came out that he's back. While this news is huge for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the fact is that Gunn's involvement with these characters went beyond two, and now one day, three movies. James Gunn's return is going to be very good news for Disney's theme park business as well, because the Guardians of the Galaxy are a big part of that.

James Gunn was directly involved in the development of Guardians of the Galaxy - Mission: Breakout, the first marvel themed attraction at a Disney theme park. In fact, he directed the video sequences of the ride while he was in production on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.

Right now, a major new E-ticket attraction is under construction at Epcot at Walt Disney World. It's a Guardians of the Galaxy themed roller coaster. While most of the details of the experience itself have yet to be confirmed, beyond some cool technical stuff, we fully expect the MCU versions of these characters to feature prominently. The initial indication was that James Gunn and the Guardians actors would film whatever sequences were required for the attraction while Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 was in production. When Gunn left the job and the movie was put on indefinite hold, it was far from clear what that meant for the theme park attraction.

The ride has something of a hard deadline. While no official opening date has been given, the ride has been promised to be open in time for Walt Disney World's 50th anniversary, which will be in 2021.

While we have no idea at this point when Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will be going into production, we do know that it will happen sometime after The Suicide Squad aka Suicide Squad 2 is completed. With that film looking at a summer 2021 release date, Gunn might not even get around to Guardians 3 until the end of 2021 or so.

Still, I would fully expect James Gunn to spearhead whatever production is necessary for the new Epcot attraction. This means that Gunn's first work back with Disney might not actually be Guardians of the Galaxy 3, it could actually be whatever theme park work is required. It likely can't wait until the movie goes into full production and will probably be handled separately.

The Guardians of the Galaxy are an important part of Disney's plans for Marvel, as the team is one of the few parts of the Marvel Cinematic Universe that Disney can use freely due to old agreements Marvel made with Universal theme parks before the company was purchased by Disney. At the same time, no part of the MCU is as closely tied to a single creator as the Guardians are to James Gunn.

One of the nice things about Guardians of the Galaxy - Mission: Breakout is that the structure of the experience allows for new content to be filmed and added to the ride over time. This is now that much more likely happen now that Guardians 3 is back on and Gunn is back involved. This will give the attraction the ability to stay relevant for a longer period of time, and keep guests going back.

What the future holds for the Guardians of the Galaxy at Disney Parks is far from clear, but there is now a brighter future to be sure.

How Shazam! Pulled Off Its Bus Rescue Scene

How Shazam! Pulled Off Its Bus Rescue Scene
Freddy and adult Billy next to bus in Shazam!

If you caught the latest Shazam! trailer, you saw a cool sequence where the eponymous hero prevents a bus from crashing into the ground. It’s one of Billy Batson’s many heroic moments within his DC Extended Universe movie, but as is the case with when making a blockbuster, pulling off this scene was a difficult endeavor, one which required the occupants inside the bus to actually fall. As director David F. Sandberg and producer Peter Safran explained:

David F. Sandberg: We bought a bunch of buses. We built a part of that overpass bridge. Our physical effects team were amazing because they built this whole rig where not only did we drive the bus through this railing, but this rig would sort of tilt the whole bus. So those guys falling through the bus, they’re actually falling through the bus.

Peter Safran: There was a big hinge mechanism on there that could take it from horizontal to vertical, the real bus. And then David had all the actors on descenders, so they were at the back of the bus, and they were dropped to the front. So it was remarkably practical for a superhero movie these days, which are so filled with VFX, there was a lot of really practical stuff that really went into that sequence.

The bus scene was among the many Shazam!-related topics discussed when David F. Sandberg and Peter Safran’s stopped by the ReelBlend podcast. As Safran noted, while it certainly would have been easy for the Shazam! VFX team to put together this sequence digitally, it’s admirable that the crew went the practical route using multiple buses and that special rig, thus making it feel more realistic. Props to the performers inside for also being good sports about being thrown from one end of the bus to another.

As the bus scene appears to unfold in the Shazam! trailer (it’s possible that the way it’s cut in the preview doesn’t exactly reflect how it happens in the actual movie), the Shazam-ified Billy Batson is shooting lighting bolts out of his hand to impress a crowd when one of his bolts hits one of the bus’ tires as it’s driving on an overpass nearby. The driver loses control and drives off the edge, but luckily Billy swoops in and catches the bus before impact. It just goes to show that if you play with lightning, you’re going to cause pandemonium on the road.

You can listen to David F. Sandberg and Peter Safran’s full interview about Shazam! on ReelBlend below!

Inspired by numerous eras of Shazam’s comic book history, Shazam! sees Billy Batson meeting the mysterious Wizard shortly after joining a new foster family and gaining the ability to become an adult superhero. With the help of Freddy Freeman, Billy will slowly get the hang of using powers like super strength, flight, hyper speed and electricity manipulation, but he’ll also have to put these powers to good use going up against the sinister Dr. Sivana, a brilliant scientist who has somehow obtained his own magical powers.

You can see Shazam! in theaters starting tomorrow evening, but don’t forget to read our review of the latest DCEU installment. You can also find out what else this superhero franchise has in the works by looking with our handy guide.

DC's Zachary Levi Shows Off His Shazam! Muscles In 'Thirst Trappy' Video

DC's Zachary Levi Shows Off His Shazam! Muscles In 'Thirst Trappy' Video

Someone better tell Henry Cavill he has some Instagram muscle shot competition out there from a fellow DC Comics superhero. Shazam! is still picking up money at the box office, even in a post-Endgame world, and Zachary Levi is doing his part to keep the attention on DC (or at least himself) as Marvel takes over the globe.

Zachary Levi recently posted a pretty shameless plug for his Flow Supplements brand -- and I say shameless because he knew he was getting his Shazam! fans in a tizzy with his shirtless workout video. He added a note at the end of his caption acknowledging "Also, fine, maybe the video is a little 'thirst-trappy', so sue me." Judge for yourself:

Chuck alum Zachary Levi had plenty of fans before Shazam! but he is an outright superstar now, and the fan comments on his post are hilarious. One fan wrote "NSFW, dude! A little warning would be nice next time."

Normally I say leave the intense workout videos to The Rock and Chris Hemsworth, but Zachary Levi was basically posting an ad for his supplements, and that directly relates to working out. So he has an excuse.

As you might imagine, Zachary Levi had to spend a lot of time at the gym to train for Shazam! with that costume showing off the usual amounts of superhero bod. At least he got to eat a lot, though, to build muscle mass -- saying he was at the gym 5-6 days a week and ate 3,500-3,700 calories a day. But they had to be "clean calories," not leftover Easter candy or ice cream.

Zachary Levi likes to keep in touch with Shazam! fans by posting messages and answering questions. Several months ago, he answered a fan's question on eating broccoli for breakfast while making Shazam! He said he basically ate the same macros all day long -- a combination of meat and veggies five times a day. Apparently he used to eat a lot of eggs but gave them up due to an intolerance of some kind.

He may have to return to that diet and exercise routine fairly soon. Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson will be joining the Shazam! world as Black Adam and he said he thought they'd start filming the Black Adam movie in about a year. Due to the ages of the younger Shazam! stars, the producers said they might move into sequel production sooner rather than later so the "kids" don't start looking older than Zachary Levi.

It is Superhero Season at the box office, with the MCU's Captain Marvel and DC's Shazam! followed now by Marvel's Avengers: Endgame. Those costumes show every flaw, so stars work hard to make it look like their human physiques are as superheroic as the characters they play (even though many of the stars are now above 50). After working so hard, I can't really blame them too much for wanting to show off the results on Instagram. If I had a personal trainer getting me in shape, or if I bothered getting myself in shape, I might show it off too.

Keep up with everything heading to theaters this year with our 2019 movie schedule guide.

JJ Abrams Confirms Star Wars: Episode IX Will Have A Time Jump

JJ Abrams Confirms Star Wars: Episode IX Will Have A Time Jump
Star Wars Episode IX shot

Star Wars Celebration is finally under way and that means we're getting our first real details about Star Wars Episode IX. Stephen Colbert hosted the Episode IX panel and, while there is so much that he can't ask, he did ask director J.J. Abrams about how the movie will start off based on how The Last Jedi ended. Abrams confirmed that the new film will pick up some amount of time after The Last Jedi, and also that all of our heroes will be working together throughout the film. According to Abrams...

The movie doesn't pick up immediately after the last film. Some time has gone by and what I’ll say is that in this movie, and you can tell by that picture is the very beginning of it, but this is an adventure that the group goes on together.

The picture in question is the one up above, that was shown during the Episode IX panel. It shows all of our heroes, Rey, Finn, Poe, Chewbacca, and C-3PO and BB-8, all together outside the Millennium Falcon. This will be where the story begins. Wherever it goes from here, these characters will apparently all go together.

All of the Star Wars saga films saw significant time jumps between episodes. The one exception being Star Wars: The Last Jedi. That movie picked up immediate following the previous entry. Now we know the last film in the arc will be a return to the previous form.

The other thing that has been interesting about the current saga has been the way main characters have been separated. Rey, Finn, and Poe, spent pretty much all of The Last Jedi doing their own thing, but even beyond that, Rey and Poe had never so much as met until the end of the last movie. For fans who liked the dynamic between Rey and Finn, or Poe and Finn for that matter, in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, we will get to see them all together again. But now we'll get to see how Rey and Poe work together. for the first time.

More than that, all three of these characters will apparently have already spent some time together when Episode IX begins, so we'll see these relationships after they've already begun to form.

The original report was that Episode IX will pick up one year after Star Wars: The Last Jedi which is certainly enough time for a lot of things to happen on both sides of the war between the Resistance and the First Order. The Resistance was on its last legs in the previous film. Has it been able to rebuild in the interim?

The same amount of time has passed for the First Order, who knows what it looks like after a year under the sole leadership of Kylo Ren.

As a fan of all these new characters, it's exciting to know that they will see this story through to its conclusion together. But who knows what state they will be in when the movie actually begins.

DCs Shazam Trailer Is Exciting And Hilarious

DCs Shazam Trailer Is Exciting And Hilarious

Shazam, previously known as Captain Marvel, has been around since the Golden Age of Comics; at one point, he was arguably more popular than Superman! Now, after decades of appearances on the printed page, TV shows and video games, the World's Mightiest Mortal is finally making his live action theatrical debut next year, and straight out of San Diego Comic-Con, the first Shazam! trailer has arrived. Take a look, below!

Inspired by Shazam's New 52 origin story, Shazam! sees Billy Batson (Asher Angel) joining a foster family, as his parents died when he was five. Among the members of this family are Freddy Freeman (Jack Dylan Grazer), who looks like he'll be one of the main sources of comedic relief in the movie. But more importantly, this preview shows us Billy taking the first steps on his superhero journey, as what he believed would be a normal subway ride turns instead brings him before the mysterious Wizard. Upon saying the Wzard's name (you guessed it, it's Shazam), Billy is transformed into a mighty, costumed adult (Zachary Levi) with a wide variety of superpowers. That's where things take a more amusing turn.

Even though it's set in the DC Extended Universe, Shazam! definitely feels much different than its predecessors. Upon finding Freddy and convincing him who he is, the Shazam-ified Billy starts testing out his powers with Freddy's help. Super strength is relatively easy to use, but he still needs to get the hang of flight and conjuring electricity. Still, being a superhero is a dream many kids have, so for Billy, this is the ultimate wish fulfillment. He gets to beat up common criminals and enjoy snacks afterwards!

But as is the case with every superhero movie, eventually a super villain comes in. Originally the plan was for Shazam to fight Black Adam (Dwayne Johnson) in his first movie, but the Kahndaqian anti-hero's introduction is now being saved for his own movie. Instead, Shazam will clash with Dr. Thaddeus Sivana (Mark Strong), who is usually depicted in the comics as being extremely intelligent, but physically weak. Not so in Shazam!, because as this trailer shows, the DCEU's Sivana can easily catch one of our intrepid hero's punches. It looks like Sivana will be also be a physical threat, and if that eye of his is any indication, like his New 52 counterpart, he's also capable of seeing magic. So yeah, being a superhero won't be quite as easy as Billy initially assumed.

Directed by David F. Sandberg, Shazam! will works its magic in theaters on April 5, 2019, so stay tuned to CinemaBlend for more updates about the movie. In the meantime, look through our DC movies guide to learn what other DCEU projects are in development, and check out our 2018 release schedule to find out what movies are coming later this year.

But it quickly changes tone and emphasizes the movie's more humorous aspects, with Shazam attempting to buy beer and purchase a superhero lair from a realtor. Check the trailer out above. Shazam stars Thor actor Zachary Levi in the title role, with Asher Angel as Billy and Mark Strong as Sivana.

Ford V Ferrari First Look: Matt Damon And Christian Bale Are Off To The Races

Ford V Ferrari First Look: Matt Damon And Christian Bale Are Off To The Races

Later this year, Christian Bale and Matt Damon will be teaming up for a film that looks sure to be a frontrunner during awards season. The two Oscar-winners will be co-starring in Ford v Ferrari, which is directed by James Mangold (Logan). The actors are already promoting the movie, and now we finally have a few more details, including the first photos from the film. Check them out in the gallery below.

Set during 1966, Ford v Ferrari tells the story of two men who attempt to give Ford a competitive advantage over racing champion Ferrari during the 24 Hours of Le Mans race in France. Christian Bale plays English racer Ken Miles, who teams up with American car designer Carroll Shelby (Matt Damon) to create the revolutionary car that will give Ford a run for its money.

The film is described as a "David vs Goliath vs Goliath" story that focuses on the men who had their boots on the ground while the titanic corporations duked it out. While the film is based on true events, it's not really about those events, James Mangold told Entertainment Weekly. It's really about two men who overcome challenges to create something they are passionate about.

Considering the talents of Matt Damon and Christian Bale, this is likely a movie to keep an eye on when it comes time to vote for Best Actor. For what it's worth, the two actors seem to share a pretty fun chemistry. Bale and Damon appeared as the honorary starters for the Indy 500 this weekend. Bale was asked how the Batmobile would do in the race, and Damon had a fun add-on.

Another big thing that we are sure to hear a lot about once press for this film heats up is that it had a focus on practical effects. These aren't CGI cars racing around a track. James Mangold was insistent that real racing be utilized for the film. The director minimized the CGI use in Logan as much as he could, and he feels it ultimately makes for a much better film as it allows more room for the characters.

Logan put James Mangold on the map, and nothing more really needs to be said about the acting chops of Christian Bale and Matt Damon. The film also stars Caitriona Balfe (Outlander), Tracy Letts (Lady Bird), Josh Lucas (Sweet Home Alabama), and Jon Bernthal (The Punisher).

You can expect to see Ford v Ferrari race into theaters on the very awards friendly date of November 15, 2019. That's still a whole summer away, so keep up to date on everything hitting theaters this year with our 2019 movie release guide. For more movie news and updates, keep it right here at CinemaBlend and we'll post new information as soon as it is available.
