Spoilers ahead for Avengers: Endgame. Look away if you haven't seen Marvel's latest

After a long year of waiting, Avengers: Endgame is finally in theaters. The Russo Brothers' (last?) MCU blockbuster held no punches, wrapping up a narrative that has spanned 22 movies and over a decade of filmmaking. Endgame is breaking all types of box office records, and really delivering for the hardcore fans who have spent countless hours and dollars to follow along with every new Marvel release.

Ahead of Endgame's release, the public was largely kept in the dark regarding the film's mysterious contents. The Russo Brothers urged the fans to keep the film's secrets and see Endgame on opening weekend to get the full theatrical experience. The film's marketing primarily used footage from the film's first 15 minutes, but potential spoilers came in the form of merchandise.

Toys have become a common source of spoilers over that past few years, arriving in shelves prior to major movies' releases. As such, fans have looked to merchandise like Lego sets to learn upcoming film's contents. Endgame's lego sets were no exception, but after Avengers: Endgame arrived in theaters, it became clear that that fans had been (literally) sold a false bill of goods.

Just look at this Lego set as proof. Following Hulkbuster's reappearance in Avengers: Infinity War, fans were delighted to see that War Machine would be getting his own massive robot in Endgame. The War Machine Buster lego set teased that Rhodey's armor would be getting a serious upgrade, and that he'd working alongside Paul Rudd's Ant-Man in the process.

Of course, none of these things happened. War Machine never got his own Hulkbuster armor, and he wasn't paired with Ant-Man on Endgame's big time heist. So while the Lego sets might be cool, they're ultimately not based off of anything from the film. Bummer.

One of the biggest Lego sets that ties into Avengers: Endgame is the Ultimate Quinjet. The set teases a big group of Avengers getting into their matching Quantum Suits, and jet setting on a mission to battle Thanos. The play set features the likes of Hawkeye, Rocket, Black Widow, and Thor, and shows them battling some Chitauri.

Of course, this is another scene that simply is never in Avengers: Endgame. The survivors never actually go anywhere with their Quantum Suits, instead using them within the Avengers Compound to travel through time and space. What's more, the Quinjet barely makes an appearance in the blockbuster, save for a few brief scenes.

In the end, only one set from Lego's Avengers: Endgame merchandise actually ended up coming to fruition in the film. That is the biggest and most expensive set, which depicts the Avengers Compound Battle. It shows Thanos and his forces attacking the good guys' hideout, with characters like Hulk, Iron Man, Captain Marvel, and Nebula fighting off the Mad Titan.

And this scene did in fact happen, albeit differently than depicted in the Lego version. The Avengers Compound was all but leveled when Thanos came knocking, and it seemed like he could take another victory. Ultimately the biggest Marvel battle occurred and the good guys won, but the compound and a few characters fell in the process.

What's clear from Avengers: Endgame's Lego sets is that Marvel Studios is cognizant of toys being potential spoilers. While still able to make money on merchandise, the studio is keeping its secrets at all costs. As such, we should probably stop worrying so much about potential toy-related spoilers, at least as far as the MCU is concerned. The Lego sets for Spider-Man: Far From Home have already hit shelves, but smart money says that they've also got some red herrings regarding the upcoming blockbuster's plot.

Avengers: Endgame is in theaters now, and noticeably missing the events shown in the film's merchandise. In the meantime, be sure to check out our 2019 release list to plan your next trip to the movies.

The Curse Of La Llorona Box Office: The Conjuring Universe Has Another Overperformer

The Curse Of La Llorona Box Office: The Conjuring Universe Has Another Overperformer
The curse of la llorona Box Office April 19-21

The Conjuring Universe has unquestionably become one of the strongest brands in the Warner Bros. arsenal. Going back to 2013, every release has been an absolutely massive hit, with the $250 million-plus worldwide earnings for each title looking even more impressive when you consider that none of them have been made with a budget larger than $40 million. It's a train that doesn't appear ready to stop any time soon, and Michael Chaves' The Curse Of La Llorona demonstrated that this weekend by earning the franchise yet another box office crown. Check out its opening weekend numbers - as well as the rest of the Top 10 - below, and join me after for analysis!

It should be noted that The Curse Of La Llorona had the weakest opening of any Conjuring Universe movie thus far - with David F. Sandberg's Annabelle: Creation previously holding that title with its $35 million take back in 2017 - but part of the reason why it can still be considered a victory is the fact that it still managed to exceed expectations. Last week prognosticators suggested that the film would struggle to make more than $20 million, with Box Office Mojo suggesting a $17 million start, but those estimates proved to be a bit too conservative. Instead, the horror flick managed to beat that number by nearly $10 million, which is pretty significant when you consider that the feature only cost a reported $9 million to make.

There is no question that it's a step down for the brand, particularly after the record-breaking numbers put up by Corin Hardy's The Nun last fall, but the performance certainly says something about the hunger for stories in this universe. Adding in numbers from foreign territories, the movie has already made $56.5 million worldwide, and it will likely be the sixth feature in the franchise to get a nine figure total by the end of its theatrical run. It might take an extra minute, though, as there are a few things working against it in the coming weeks.

The first and most obvious roadblock is the forthcoming arrival of what is unquestionably one of the most anticipated blockbuster releases of all time. Joe and Anthony Russo's Avengers: Endgame is expected to have the attention of everyone in the world when screenings start on Thursday night, and there is probably little chance that folks are planning on doing a weird double feature that pairs the three-hour superhero epic with The Curse Of La Llorona.

Also, the film doesn't have quite the same level of buzz that the previous Conjuring Universe efforts have received. Not only have professional reviews not been super kind to the release, but audiences don't seem to be falling in love with it either. On CinemaScore, it doesn't look so great when you compare its "B-" grade" to the "A-" earned by both Conjuring titles and the "B" that both of the Annabelle movies received.

All that being said, it's already profitable after just three days, so Warner Bros. can't complain too much.

Speaking of the studio, this weekend was actually a double win for WB, as another one of their big brands - the DC Extended Universe - crossed an important milestone. It took a few weeks, but David F. Sandberg's Shazam! is now the seventh title in the franchise to join the century club. The movie only dropped about 29 percent in its third week, and while its still the slowest performer among recent DC releases (it's still made only half of what Zack Snyder's Justice League did in 2017), it has an ace up its sleeve: the fact that it didn't cost nearly as much to make as your average big comic book adaptation. Put in perspective, it's already made three times its budget worldwide - albeit before the cost of marketing and publicity.

As for the rest of the Top 10 beyond the two biggest releases, it was actually a very strange weekend. First there is the disappointment of Roxann Dawson's Breakthrough, which failed to make the $17-18 million that was expected in its first five days (screenings started mid-week). It was thought that the feature would get a nice boost from the religious crowd, and it actually earned better reviews than most god-centric releases, but apparently it couldn't stir up too much interest.

That's really the least of it, though, as the big theme for this weekend was unexpected ranking flip flops. For starters, Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck's Captain Marvel seemingly got a boost from the aforementioned forthcoming release of Avengers: Endgame, as the blockbuster jumped from its sixth place position last week into fourth place. The $9.1 million it earned over the last few days now puts its domestic total over $400 million, and its only the seventh of 21 Marvel Cinematic Universe releases to hit that benchmark. To date it has made $1.1 billion worldwide, and while it looks like it won't surpass the numbers put up by Joe and Anthony Russo's Captain America: Civil War back in 2016, the performance is still nothing short of astonishing.

Another surprise this weekend was the performance of Chris Butler's Missing Link - albeit the significance is relative. The stop-motion animated film got off to a depressing start last time around, as it started its theatrical run in ninth place, but this week it actually climbed a bit thanks to the fact that it only dropped about 26.5 percent. The movie has still only made about $13 million in North America, which isn't exactly impressive, but it is trying to put up a fight.

The middle of the chart also saw some weird switches, as Tina Gordon Chism's Little went from second place to fifth, and Kevin Kolsch and Dennis Widmyer's Pet Sematary went from fourth to seventh. Those are far less noteworthy than what happened to Neil Marshall's Hellboy, however. The panned Lionsgate release played in the exact same number of theaters this weekend as it did when it opened, but far fewer seats were filled in the last three days. Not only did it drop from third place to 10th, but it suffered a drop of nearly 68 percent. It failed to cross the $20 million mark, and things are looking seriously bad for the feature, which reportedly cost $50 million to make.

It was definitely a weird weekend at the box office, but things should change in a massive way next time around. It's entirely possible that Avengers: Endgame will soon become the new record holder for biggest worldwide opening - and we'll have all of the details for you next Sunday.

Kevin Feige Confirms An Incredible Hulk And Spider-Man Connection

Kevin Feige Confirms An Incredible Hulk And Spider-Man Connection
Martin Starr in The Incredible Hulk and Spider-Man: Homecoming

If a franchise is around long enough, then the greater the chances are you’ll have an actor return to play a different character. Just look at all the actors the Law & Order shows have reused over the years. However, every now and then there’s an opportunity to have the characters played by such an actorconnect to one another or even become the same character. Now it’s been confirmed that the latter is the case with Martin Starr in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Martin Starr first cameoed as a college student in The Incredible Hulk, credited simply as “Computer Nerd,” who Edward Norton’s Bruce Banner gives pizza to in order to access the Culver University computer lab. Nine years later, Starr returned to the MCU as Roger Harrington, a science teacher and head of the Academic Decathlon Team at Peter Parker’s school in Spider-Man: Homecoming.

During a recent Reddit AMA, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige was asked if we can assume if Martin Starr’s The Incredible Hulk and Spider-Man: Homecoming characters are the same people. Feige responded:

I do.

There you have it. If the head honcho at Marvel Studios consider Martin Starr to be playing the same individual in the MCU, then we can take that as a fact. When he briefly crossed paths with Bruce Banner, Roger Harrington was still going through higher education, but eventually he found a teaching position at the Midtown School of Science and Technology, where his life would intersect with another superhero.

It’s worth noting that in The Incredible Hulk novelization, Martin Starr’s character is named Amadeus Cho, who in the Marvel comics universe is a young Asian American man who is one of the smartest people on the planet and succeeded Bruce Banner as The Hulk in recent years. Obviously that portion of the novelization has been rendered non-canon, paving the way for a more faithful version of Amadeus to be introduced down the line. After all, we already met Amadeus’ mother, Helen, in Avengers: Age of Ultron.

While Roger Harrington’s participation in The Incredible Hulk was simply reacting with gratitude that Bruce Banner gave him pizza (there was a scene where he had dialogue, but it was cut), he had a more substantial role looking after his students in Spider-Man: Homecoming. He was on the elevator in the Washington Monument with some of the teens when the Chitauri energy core detonated, but fortunately Spider-Man saved him and the others before they fell to their deaths.

Martin Starr is reprising Roger Harrington this summer for Spider-Man: Far From Home, as Roger is one of the teachers chaperoning the trip to Europe. So naturally he’ll get caught up in Spider-Man’s latest adventure, but it remains to be seen if he’ll ever interact with Bruce Banner again. That would be quite a reunion, especially considering how Bruce is looking nowadays.

Spider-Man: Far From Home spins its web in theaters on July 2. For everything coming to the MCU afterwards, look through our handy guide.

Is John Cena Joining Fast And Furious 9? Here’s What Vin Diesel Says

Is John Cena Joining Fast And Furious 9? Here’s What Vin Diesel Says
John Cena in Fast and Furious 9?

Could John Cena be joining the upcoming Fast and Furious 9? That’s a question that’s actually worth talking about this week, as longtime series actor Vin Diesel shared a fun video nodding at Paul Walker and the changing nature of the franchise. Then, John Cena pops in, seemingly teasing a working partnership coming up.

But don't take my word for it. Take a look below.

Watching the clip, Vin Diesel talks specifically about Paul Walker and the long-running Fast franchise, noting that it’s a big responsibility to keep things moving. At the end, John Cena pops in, waving and winking at fans. While we can’t 100% say this is teasing something coming up in the universe, it would make sense.

After all with Hobbs & Shaw coming out this year, there’s a good chance that Fast and Furious 9 will inject some new blood into the franchise thanks to likely losing Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham. This is particularly true if Hobbs & Shaw does well at the box office, leading to the possibility of sequels for the spinoff. (Which would likely be a good thing for all parties, given some cast members weren’t happy about the spinoff at all.)

Fast and Furious franchise fans know that Paul Walker was called Pablo by his friends and, in the video, Vin Diesel waxes poetic about his former pal. Walker played Brian O’Conner in the series for years before his untimely death in 2013 at the age of 40. He had mostly completed work on Furious 7 when a single-vehicle collision ultimately killed him.

Before John Cena ultimately pops up in Vin Diesel’s Instagram video, Diesel notes:

As you know I’m always thinking fast and thinking about the responsibility and making something iconic and deserving of your loyalty. I know this sounds crazy but every blue moon I feel like Pablo up there sends me someone, another soldier for the fight for truth. And today someone came by our Toretto gym that speaks to what Pablo would have brought.

As evidenced in the video and with the quote, John Cena happened to be on the premises. However, given the status of Fast and Furious 9, it wouldn’t be a huge surprise if he were added to the mix sometime before production really gets off of the ground.

Either way, this video should be a fun one for wrestling fans.

As a side note, production on Fast and Furious 9 was supposed to start back in February, but was then delayed until April of 2019. Recently, Vin Diesel also shared an image with costume designer Sanja Hays, indicating the movie was close to getting off of the ground on April 18.

Meanwhile, John Cena just turned 42 and has been busy sharing words about never giving up and capitalizing on opportunities.

This likely has nothing to do with Fast 9, but the timing is still incredibly fortuitous for all of this, given Fast and Furious 9 is moving forward and John Cena is hellbent on pushing out as many projects as he can right now.

Coming up on just the big screen, the actor has The Voyage of Doctor Dolittle, Project X-Traction, Playing with Fire, and The Janson Directive. In the franchise realm, John Cena has also been rumored for James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad.

We’ll let you know if Vin Diesel teases any more John Cena moving forward. We’re definitely interested in how Fast and Furious 9 pans out, and if you are too, take a look at what we know about the upcoming flick.

Why Shazam! Works So Well As A Crowdpleaser, According To The Cast

Why Shazam! Works So Well As A Crowdpleaser, According To The Cast
Shazam Freddy and Shazam chug a soda in front of the convenience store

The DC Comics brand of films has been on the mend, with its most recent efforts in the world of comic adaptations gaining a lot of attention and affection from fans. That trend looks like it’s continuing with the theatrical release of Shazam! set to take the public by storm this weekend, with early reactions trending in the film’s favor. Even the cast of the film knows how latest DC adaptation that makes it a bona fide crowd pleaser, and they weren’t afraid to share their thoughts. While the answers may differ slightly, all roads lead to two key elements; fun and heart.

During the recent press day for the film, CinemaBlend got to sit down with the cast of Shazam! to discuss how this superpowered adventure gives the people what they want. And starting off with Dr. Silvana himself, the always solid Mark Strong, the film’s appeal is very easy to see. In particular, Strong pointed out the following elements that really brought the film together:

It’s just so irreverent, and so much fun. The notion now that we’ve seen a lot of superhero movies in which the superheroes are really capable, and now suddenly we see one who has no idea how to use his powers, is really funny. So I think people will enjoy the humor of that. I hope they also then enjoy, conversely, quite how dark and weird and creepy the bad guy story is as well. And then, of course, there’s the family theme at the heart of it all; which is quite moving, I think.

Mark Strong is certainly not new to the DC Comics rodeo, as his performance in Green Lantern with Ryan Reynolds introduced him as Sinestro, the would-be baddie of that corner of the DC universe. So seeing his thoughts on how Shazam! works as a film come from not only a place of experience, but also of genuinely constructive criticism.

Also, Mark Strong nails it on the head when he mentions the fact that director David F. Sandberg’s film is a great mixture of the fun and the family, with a nice sprinkling of the scary on top. Which also works, considering a big part of the demographic for Shazam! just happens to be kids and teenagers who will be flocking to their local theaters this weekend to partake in the joys this film has to offer.

It helps that there were some kids on hand during the Shazam! press day that could confirm those thoughts are, in fact accurate. With Asher Angel and Jack Dylan Grazer on hand for the festivities, we also got to speak to them about what audiences should expect when seeing Warner Bros’ new comic book movie. And judging by their reaction, and the quotes below, fun is a huge part of the crowd-pleasing energy Shazam! has going for it:

Grazer: ‘They should expect some noise, some laughter, some constant applause because this movie is so damned good. It’s really really fun. When we went to the movie theater to watch it with the fans, they were all over the place. They were ecstatic, they were laughing…’

Angel: ‘They were jumping up and down in their seats.’

Grazer: ‘...on their toes. Yeah, it was great.’

As they were answering the question as to what makes Shazam! such a crowdpleaser, there was this current of energy that filled the room. Both being young, up-and-coming actors, Asher Angel and Jack Dylan Grazer are clearly excited to see this movie about to take off. It sounds like they had a lot of fun watching it with a crowd during one of the several public screenings that have been conducted to really hype up the movie.

But, of course, how can you talk about Shazam! without roping in the man in the suit himself: certified crowdpleaser Zachary Levi. When it came his turn to answer the question of just what makes his big superhero debut in the DC universe something you can watch in a theater, surrounded by fans of the source material, he knew exactly what makes this film work in front of a crowd. The first part of Levi’s answer went as follows:

The everything. It’s got everything, guys. It’s wish fulfillment on the purest level. It’s the little kid in all of us who’s always dreamt about being a superhero, and now can say a magic word and become a superhero. That’s like the most cool, iconic archetype of the hero story I can think of. Plus, it’s layered with so much heart, and so much fun and [it’s] funny. I mean, there’s so much comedy, and some creepy stuff as well, you know.

The fun that shines through in Shazam! is undeniable, and you can literally see it on Zachary Levi’s face, throughout our interview and other venues during the film’s press tour. But the best part is, the fun that went into making the film as thrilling as it turned out to be in the finished product certainly doesn’t betray the message it’s trying to put across.

That fact isn’t lost on Zachary Levi either, as when he continued to answer the question of what makes Shazam! a singular experience as a film, he hit on a couple of points closer to the emotional heart of the film, which find themselves integrated rather well alongside the more spectacular elements. Levi continued by mentioning the following:

I think a lot of people will see themselves represented on screen, particularly people that might not feel as represented on screen, and I think that’s really beautiful. The family dynamic speaks to a lot. We get to tell a story about foster kids. There are 450,000, or so, kids in the United States right now in the foster system, and I love that they have themselves to look up to. To be empowered by, to shine that light, even in a small way, is a very powerful thing.

The DC Comics film franchise has come a long way from the days of people debating its depiction of Superman, as well as the question of whether or not the series on the whole really understood the comics to begin with. Shazam! definitely proves itself to be a course correction in line with the whimsy of Aquaman and the empowerment of Wonder Woman, and it’s going to be particularly interesting seeing the public reaction to the film as it opens wide. In the meantime, check out the reactions of the cast of Shazam!, in regards to their own film, in the clip from our interview shown below.

Shazam! says the magic word on April 5th; but if you’re curious about what’s coming down the pike after you’ve enjoyed this magic powered romp, you can take a look at the 2019 release schedule and choose your next adventure accordingly!

One Big Mysterio Secret We Think Spider-Man: Far From Home Is Hiding

One Big Mysterio Secret We Think Spider-Man: Far From Home Is Hiding

One of the ways that the Marvel Cinematic Universe Spider-Man movies have distinguished themselves from the Web-Slinger's previous cinematic outings is by using villains that haven't been adapted for the big screen yet. In Spider-Man: Homecoming, Peter Parker tangled directly with Vulture and Shocker, and we were also treated to appearances from The Tinkerer and Mac Gargan (though the latter wasn't in his Scorpion garb). For Spider-Man: Far From Home, it was originally believed Spidey would battle Mysterio, but it's since been revealed that Jake Gyllenhaal's Quentin Beck will actually aid the superhero. Now thanks to the new Far From Home trailer, I can't help but wonder that rather than being a master of illusions like he is in the comics, the MCU's Mysterio is a legitimate spell-caster.

In case you're not familiar with Mysterio, the comic book version of Quentin Beck started out as a special effects expert and stuntman working in Hollywood, but when he realized he couldn't progress further in his career, he turned to a life of crime. His special effects expertise, combined with his skills as a hypnotist, magician, chemist and inventor, quickly made him one of Spider-Man's most formidable foes. He doesn't measure up against Spider-Man in a direct physical fight, but his use of illusions, hallucinogenics and weird gadgets make him incredibly dangerous for not just Spidey, but frankly most Marvel heroes.

When it was first reported that Mysterio would appear in Spider-Man: Far From Home, fans naturally thought we'd be getting a faithful adaptation of the super villain. Obviously some creative liberties would be taken with him, as is the case with characters in every superhero movie, but considering how visually dazzling Mysterio's "powers" are, it was about time he finally get time to shine on the big screen. But clearly the first cinematic Mysterio will be quite different from his comic book counterpart.

Last month, it was revealed that in Spider-Man: Far From Home, Nick Fury has asked Quentin Beck to help Spider-Man battle strange creatures called Elementals. Right off the bat, not only does that set up Mysterio as an ally rather than an enemy to Spider-Man (at least at first), but it also indicates that he has knowledge of magical or alien. Fast-forward to today, this was the final moment in the Far From Home trailer before the title card.

Seeing Mysterio plays tricks on Spider-Man and slowly neutralize him is one thing, but watching him fly into battle and shooting green, smoke-like energy at a giant water monster (could this be the MCU's version of Hydro-Man?) is an entirely different matter. Plus, look at the symbols making up Mysterio's shield when he's blocking that attack. Doesn't it remind you of the spells Doctor Strange and the other sorcerers cast?

Obviously we won't have the full Spider-Man: Far From Home picture until the movie comes out in July, but the fact that we're getting a Mysterio who's helping Spider-Man and combating creatures threatening Earth is a far cry from what fans have come to expect from him. Still, while not faithful to the source material, the possibility of Mysterio being an actual magician rather than a pretender is intriguing.

As we saw in Doctor Strange, just because someone has the ability to conjure magic doesn't mean they're one of the Masters of the Mystic Arts. Maybe like Jonathan Pangborn, Quentin trained under the Masters and eventually decided he didn't want to join the organization, or maybe he learned how to conjure magic from another source. Either way, he's clearly a man of many talents, which is why Nick Fury would want to work with him.

While the MCU movies didn't show S.H.I.E.L.D. dealing with magic outside of Coulson and his agents interacting with Thor and the Destroyer armor in New Mexico, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. made it clear that Nick Fury has dealt with supernatural forces in the past, like the Darkhold. Fury may not be directly affiliated with S.H.I.E.L.D. anymore (as far as the movies are concerned, the organization is still collapsed), but he's still keeping up his spy work. So naturally he'd keep Quentin Beck on retainer should the right threat pop up, and these Elementals evidently fit that classification.

Of course, it's still possible that Jake Gyllenhaal's Mysterio is still relying on technology, and the reason its capabilities loo like magic is because he has a taste for the theatrical, especially if, like his comic book counterpart, he previously worked in Hollywood. Going further, though, there's also the possibility that 'deception' is still the name of Mysterio's game in the MCU.

Perhaps the Elementals aren't magical or extraterrestrial beings, but advanced technology that Quentin Beck either built himself or obtained elsewhere. Quentin subsequently decides to set up an elaborate scenario were he gets to look like a superhero; the man who saves the day and the public adores. His Elementals are causing real harm, and only Mysterio is the one who can "defeat" him. Spider-Man would eventually catch wind of this plot and fight Mysterio, thus giving a classic clash between these two like we were expecting. But then something goes wrong and causes one or more of the Elementals to go haywire. Quentin can no longer control them, leaving it up to Spidey to neutralize them once and for all.

Longtime Marvel fans know Mysterio as an antagonist who merely fakes having magical powers, so turning him into a real spell-caster for Spider-Man: Far From Home might not sit well with certain fans. On the other hand, sometimes deviations from the source material in a comic book movie can still be well-received, and perhaps Jake Gyllenhaal's Mysterio will be counted among this group (it certainly helps that he's still wearing the fishbowl). Or maybe this all just one intricate ploy and Mysterio is still the illusion-casting baddie we love. Hopefully the next Far From Home trailer will clear this matter up.

Spider-Man: Far From Home will spin its web in theaters on July 5. Stay tuned to CinemaBlend for more updates on the movie, and if you're interested in learning what other movies are opening this year, check out our 2019 release schedule.

Why Avengers: Endgame Can’t Really Be Affected By The Captain Marvel Movie

Why Avengers: Endgame Can’t Really Be Affected By The Captain Marvel Movie
Brie Larson is Captain Marvel

The way that Marvel Studios maps out its releases, there are very few coincidences, but more than a few happy accidents. For example, Spider-Man (Tom Holland) was only inserted into Captain America: Civil War after it was known that Sony would share the rights to the character, which also led to Spider-Man: Homecoming.

But contrary to popular belief, the current MCU blockbuster, Captain Marvel, can’t really have as big of an impact on this month’s Avengers: Endgame, for a very specific reason: Namely, Joe and Anthony Russo planned out and actually shot the bulk of Endgame long before Marvel even told them that there was going to BE a Captain Marvel movie.

The Russos basically filmed Endgame and Infinity War back to back, and so when we recently spoke with Anthony and asked him if the response to Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck’s Captain Marvel was encouraging, he honestly explained:

Part of the thing that I've always loved about Marvel, my brother and I have really appreciated it, is that Marvel has had this whole attitude of ‘One movie at a time.’ They want every movie to be everything it can be when it’s time for that movie to be made. And then once it's made, you carry the story forward from there. And it's been really effective. Obviously by now, because Marvel is making more movies per year, and because we made these two movies back to back, we couldn't really use that process at this point.

So the truth is we made these movies long before we could appreciate anything about [Captain Marvel]. Certainly not even how the audiences would react to Captain Marvel in her own standalone film. We had to make these movie before the idea of that film even exists. So our approach to the storytelling in regards to that character was just coming very specifically from the needs of this story.

People might not realize that Joe and Anthony Russo filmed a lot of Avengers: Infinity War and the continuation, which would become Avengers: Endgame, at the same time. In fact, when CinemaBlend traveled to the set of the movies in Atlanta years ago, we learned about scenes that we never saw in Infinity War, and many people on set for those days were never 100% sure what movie they were filming at any given time.

So from the sound of it, the Russos always knew that they were going to have Captain Marvel (Brie Larson) in Endgame, but didn’t know at all how her movie would set her up, or be received, when they filmed her parts years ago. I brought up to Anthony Russo that this sounds similar to them using Wakanda as a key location in Infinity War, long before audiences saw the movie Black Panther. But he clarified:

Back then, it was easier because we launched that character in Civil War. We had already begun, with our partners Markus and McFeely on the writing side, sort of creating and tracking that narrative forward. Certainly, what the Black Panther film with Ryan Coogler brought to that was a great surprise to us, and a thrill for us. But that was a little easier in the sense that we already had deep roots in that character on a narrative level.

Thankfully, for Marvel Studios, most audiences are gravitating toward Carol Danvers, and are digging Captain Marvel. Her movie has grossed nearly $1 billion at the global box office, and audiences are ready to see her fighting alongside the Avengers as they get vengeance on Thanos (Josh Brolin). But the current movie had no effect on the planning on Endgame, and now you know the reason why.

Avengers: Endgame will be in theaters on April 26, and as of today, you can buy your tickets, so go get them, now!
