M. Night Shyamalan Movie Twists, Ranked

M. Night Shyamalan Movie Twists, Ranked
M Night Shyamalan in Mel Gibson movie

Depending on who you talk to, M. Night Shyamalan is a master of suspense, leading his audience into believing that a film will go in one direction, only to pull the rug out from under us with a surprise twist. At least, that is what one group will tell you. To others, he is a director who cheaply abuses his fake out gimmick as an ironic way to remain relevant despite his consistent failures as a filmmaker.

Love him or hate him, M. Night Shyalaman does, indeed, take pleasure in titillating his audience with a fun twist ending, which he especially made clear with the resolution(s) of his comic book genre analysis, Glass, but more on that later. While twist endings have certainly been a defining aspect of his over the past couple of decades, there are endings that have left us in the deepest state of shock, as well as those that left us sheepishly underwhelmed.

Without taking overall movie quality into account, let’s take a look at M. Night Shyamalan’s most memorable twists, ranked from “Really? What the heck?” to “REAAAAALLLLLY?! WHAT THE HECK!” Of course, I will be discussing the ending of these films, so SPOILER ALERT!

9. Lady In The Water (2006)

You’re probably wondering, Why even include this one on the list? There’s no twist. Well, that is precisely why it is ranked at the bottom. The twist is laughable, wholly inconsequential, and comes so early in the film that it is easy to disregard it as a twist.

M. Night Shyamalan’s seventh effort as writer and director is about a bedtime story character named... Story (Bryce Dallas Howard) who becomes stranded at an apartment complex maintained by superintendent Cleveland Heep (Paul Giamatti). Heep must protect Story from vile creatures trying to keep her from returning to her fantasy world. Meanwhile, Story also tells Heep that her purpose for visiting the human world is to become the muse for an aspiring author destined to write a book that will inspire future leaders to make the world a better place, but only after the challenging concepts he proposes lead to his assassination. The author is played by M. Night Shyalaman.

That is the twist, people. The movie you thought was a modern variation of the fairy tale is really Shyamalan’s personal indictment on the people who criticized his own writing. This could have been more easily forgivable or even accepted as an intriguing plot point if not for the self-indulgent decision to cast himself as the writer who will one day save the world and die doing it. Lady in the Water’s “hidden” message is so on the nose that it only did less to legitimize M. Night Shyamalan’s reputation as a dramatist and more as an unintentional comedic genius.

I suppose his next film (and the next on our list) was his way of swerving into that skid.

8. The Happening (2008)

People who hate The Happening are those who do not know how to have fun with a movie regardless of quality. Do not get me wrong: as a serious disaster movie, I think it’s not great, but as a satire of disaster movies, I think it’s brilliant.

M. Night Shyamalan cast Mark Wahlberg in the, then, unlikely role of a high school biology teacher struggling to protect his wife (Zooey Deschanel) and his best friend’s daughter (Ashlyn Sanchez) after a mysterious disaster occurs that, somehow, is resulting in a sweep of fatalities across the country. The marketing material kept the actual “happening” of the film a secret, as well as the hilariously bizarre moments the film is now infamous for (“Whaaaaat? Nooo!”), but we discover in the film’s opening that something is causing people to take their own lives. Intriguing (pre-Bird Box) setup, but wait until you hear the twist!

Instead of widespread mania or biological warfare as characters speculate at first, the earth’s vegetation is emitting a poisonous gas out of revenge against human beings. While this could have been M. Night Shyamalan’s attempt at environmental commentary, it is impossible not to laugh at the idea, especially with the robotic acting, off-putting dialogue, and other head scratcher moments from beginning to end. Really, I think he knew what he was doing with this one and we just weren’t ready for him to show his darkly humorous side, but it does not save the twist from feeling empty.

At least it was not as ambiguous as this one...

7. Signs (2002)

Signs, signs, everywhere there’s signs that alien invaders are among us in M. Night Shyamalan’s third mainstream thriller. Mel Gibson plays Graham Hess, a former minister, having lost his faith following the death of his wife, whose family is plagued by suspicions that Earth may be under attack. The biggest red flag is the huge crop circle that formed on Gibson’s farm just overnight.

The film’s climax sees the family in seemingly better times having survived the night of the predicted invasion, until they discover an intruder in their midst: one of their extraterrestrial visitors, holding Graham’s son Morgan (Rory Culkin) with sinister intent. Suddenly, Graham has a flashback of the last thing his late wife said to him: “Tell Merrill to swing away,” prompting him to tell his high school baseball star brother, Merrill (Joaquin Phoenix), to grab his old slugger and take a good swing at the alien. In all the commotion, the alien knocks over a glass of water on the table (which there are many laying around, thanks to Graham’s germaphobic daughter, played by a young Abigail Breslin), which drips down his skin and appears to have a deadly effect on him. So, with a mix of melee fighting skills and a generous dose of acidic water, Merrill manages to successfully defeat the alien.

There are two twists that I count in this scenario and I do not care much for either of them. For one, the idea of our otherworldly enemy being allergic to water is a blatant rip-off of H.G. Wells’ common cold-sensitive martians in The War of the Worlds, and, on the other hand, I cannot decide what to make of Graham’s wife’s psychic vision. Is there supposed to be a deeper symbolic meaning to this reveal, did the wife have some secret connection to the aliens, or was it just thrown in there for convenience? Unfortunately, I have to go with that last option, personally, which is heartbreaking since Signs is on fire with some very effective moments of suspense until the final letdown.

Some would actually say the same about this next film.

6. Unbreakable (2000)

Most comic book movies glorify the idea of being a superhero as the best thing that could ever happen to you. For David Dunn (Bruce Willis), it marks a point of depression for him. You can’t really blame him though, since he makes his revelation by being the only survivor of a fatal trainwreck.

In M. Night Shyamalan’s intriguing analysis of superhero mythology, Unbreakable, Dunn discovers, denies, and comes to accept his superhuman abilities (strength, indestructibility, and sensing evil through physical touch) with the help of a comic book enthusiast, who is the complete opposite of indestructible, named Elijah Price (Samuel L. Jackson). The ending of the film sees Dunn shaking hands with his new friend and, suddenly, his “sixth sense” kicks into gear, allowing his see a vision of Price sabotaging the same train he survived. In that moment, Dunn realizes that his ally is really his arch enemy, an aspiring supervillain searching for his superhero.

There is a variety of reasons to love this twist, even if you are one of those who claims to have seen it coming. Not only does it serve as a potent, thought-provoking indictment on comic book tropes, but also a commentary on the dangerous effects of obsession. Price is so determined to prove that his comic book fantasies are reality that he willfully assumes the role of the antagonist (and alias Mr. Glass) and goes to grave lengths to carry out his mission, leading to his downfall.

Of course, it would not be a superhero movie without an arch villain, so the reveal does lose momentum in that regard. Perhaps if the audience did not know it was a comic book movie...

5. Split (2017)

After a series of embarrassing critical and commercial failures that I will not mention for the sake of our readers’ mental health, M. Night Shyamalan finally made what appeared to be comeback with 2015’s The Visit (more on that later). This made audiences skeptical if he could make another killing two years later with this thriller starring James McAvoy as man with dissociative identity disorder holding three teenage girls captive.

The movie’s final girl, Casey Cooke (Anya Taylor-Joy) manages to narrowly escape James McAvoy’s Kevin Wendell Crumb after he takes on the persona of his strongest and most animalistic identity, The Beast, but only by proving that she, like Kevin, is also a victim of an abusive childhood. M. Night Shyalaman tricks the audience into believing this is the inevitable twist we have been waiting for, until a bonus scene reveals the film’s true purpose. We see two women chatting about Crumb’s arrest at a diner, comparing him to another man who was arrested about 17 years prior whose name they cannot recall, until Bruce Willis as David Dunn interjects with their answer: “Mr. Glass.”

Split is an Unbreakable sequel?!” is what audiences gasped as they walked out of the theater. It was a perplexing, yet warmly welcomed reveal that showed how Split was the beginning of David Dunn’s next villain. It helped M. Night Shyalaman, once again, gain relevance as an innovator of the surprise ending and had fans excited to see where his comic book-inspired universe would go next.

Depending on who you ask, the next and final chapter in the Unbreakable universe served as Shyamalan’s most ambitious venture into twisty storytelling yet.

4. Glass (2019)

Which leads me to this follow-up. If you go to an M. Night Shyamalan movie for his signature twist ending, Glass, his conclusion to story set up in Unbreakable and Split is the ultimate experience for fans because it is chock full of them.

After learning that his next big adversary is on the loose, David Dunn (Bruce Willis reprising his superhuman Unbreakable role) tracks down James McAvoy’s Kevin Wendell Crumb (nicknamed The Horde in the media) only for both of them to be arrested and placed in an insane asylum, where Dunn is reunited by his former friend-turned-enemy Elijah “Mr. Glass” Price (Samuel L. Jackson). The trio of living comic book caricatures are monitored by Dr. Ellie Staple (Sarah Paulson), a psychologist who specializes in convincing people who believe they are superheroes that their abilities are an illusion. Inevitably, we learn Staple’s true intentions, as well as a couple of other revelations - all within the span of about 20 minutes.

First, Crumb’s father was killed on the same train Dunn survived, leading to the abuse he endured by his mentally ill single mother. Second, Staple is actually a member of a covert organization with intent to keep the existence of superheroes and villains a secret to the public, explaining her unusual job title. Finally, Elijah Price copied video evidence of David Dunn and Kevin Wendell Crumb’s abilities, which Casey Cooke (Anya Taylor-Joy returning from Split), Dunn’s son, Joseph (Spencer Treat Clark), and Price’s mother (Charlayne Woodard) reveal to the world over social media, making Staple’s mission a failure.

Despite how the conclusion(s) of Glass faced criticism for having a few too many endings and an underwhelming hero-villain battle at the climax, watching the compendium of this three-chapter comic book analysis come to a close was satisfying for me, especially given how M. Night Shyamalan's twist ties these characters together. It was a unique distraction from the usual slam-bang-boom we get from superhero movies, so as a twist it worked.

M. Night Shyalaman managed the reverse effect with this next film.

3. The Village (2004)

The Happening is hilarious schlock. Lady In The Water is irritatingly quirky. The Village is just a bland period piece spliced with a monster movie with characters who should have invested in coffee crops, until you find out what is really going on.

A community of 19th-century townsfolk lives in constant fear of the creatures that hide in the woods outside their quaint village, desperate to stay loyal to the agreement that as long as no one steps foot in the woods, the creatures will leave them alone. When young villager Lucius (Joaquin Phoenix) is injured, his fiancee, Ivy (Bryce Dallas Howard) feels she has no choice but to enter the woods in search of the proper medicine to nurse Lucius back to health, despite her blindness. Yet, her lack of sight is the exact reason the village Elders are willing to let her take this journey. Why?

Not only are the creatures non-existent rumors, as the chief Elder (Willaim Hurt) reveals halfway through, but all that exists outside of the woods is… modern society. Yes, the villagers are pawns in a social experiment kept secret by the park rangers who own the land the village was built on and the monsters are the Elders’ ploy to shield its people from the truth. I don’t care if you claim to have guessed that halfway, if you felt confused, or if you think this is the pinnacle of M. Night Shyamalan’s laziness as a writer, I stand firmly by my belief that is one of the more clever ideas the filmmaker has come up with and makes The Village a far more interesting film than I would have initially expected.

I also did not expect to like this next film's twist as much as I did.

2. The Visit (2015)

M. Night Shyamalan was rotting in movie jail, as far as former fans were concerned, when he teamed up with horror movie wizard producer Jason Blum for this hopeful comeback. I would call The Visit, the filmmaker’s first try into the found footage genre, a surprise success in that regard, particularly for being a better attempt at his darkly comic sensibilities after The Happening and for its big surprise near the end.

What at first appears to be teenager Becca’s (Olivia DeJonge) fun attempt to document her and her brother, Tyler’s (Ed Oxenbould) first ever visit to their grandparents’ house soon turns into video evidence of their fight for survival as “Nana” (Deanna Dunagan) and “Pop Pop” (Peter McRobbie) show early signs of not being right in the head. Nana runs through the house naked, Pop Pop keeps dressing up for a non-existent costume party, and hints at the old couples’ extraterrestrial lineage are mentioned at one point. It is challenging for the children to accept that their grandparents are insane, until a revealing video chat with their mother (Kathryn Hahn) saves them from worrying if they are destined to inherit their mental illness because those crazy people are not who they say they are.

“Nana” and “Pop Pop” are actually mental patients that the real Nana and Pop Pop used to visit, until the imposters escaped, murdered them, and assimilated themselves into their home before the children arrived. In a film filled with laughably bizarre insanity, the twist is a very creepy and devilishly funny discovery that serves as the film’s second biggest “Oh crap!” As for the biggest “Oh crap!” moment, if you have seen the film, you surely know what I am referring to. If not, I will let you find that out on your own.

But no twist that M. Night Shyamalan has delivered in his prolific career has ever, and may not ever, be as iconic his breakout hit.

1.The Sixth Sense (1999)

M. Night Shyamalan had directed two films to not much avail before this Academy Award-nominated chiller.

The title of The Sixth Sense refers to young Cole Sear’s (Haley Joel Osment) ability to see the spirits of the unwitting dead. Cole seeks the help of Malcolm Crowe (Bruce Willis), a child psychologist whose marriage has fallen apart since his violent encounter with a former patient (Donnie Wahlberg), to help him cope with his terrifying gift, believing that he is the only one who can help him. Yet, it is Cole who ends up helping Crowe the most, as he realizes in the film’s epic finale.

The violent encounter with Crowe’s former patient (a gunshot to his stomach) years earlier actually ended his life and Crowe had been a ghost through the whole movie. Finally understanding his wife’s inability to communicate with him and after successfully aiding Cole in taking ownership of his skills, Crowe chooses this moment to crossover into the proper afterlife - a bittersweet conclusion wrapped in unbelievable shock. Shyamalan earned comparisons to Steven Spielberg with this hit and justifiably so, considering the clever ways he hints at what would eventually become his trademark without spilling the beans, even if Are You Afraid of the Dark? did the same concept years earlier.

We’ll just ignore that.

What do you think of our ranking? Do you agree that The Sixth Sense is the ultimate movie fake out, or do you think I was a little too generous to M. Night Shyamalan? However you feel, let us know in the comments and be sure to check for more fun facts and updates here on CinemaBlend.

Jack Black Has A Crazy Idea For Jumanji 3

Jack Black Has A Crazy Idea For Jumanji 3

One of last years biggest surprises was Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, a sequel that looked like a simple cash grab of a nostalgic IP upon first glance, but was actually a super fun and entertaining flick bolstered by a charming cast. The sequel was a sleeper surprise hit, taking home insane big money at the box office and being one of the few movies not to get suffocated by Star Wars: The Last Jedi. A sequel was soon greenlit, but how can the franchise capitalize on all this new energy? According to Jack Black, when in doubt go to space.

I say we take this mother into space. 'Cause my question with Jumanji is, 'What is this game? Who invented this game?' It has to be some alien technology. Am I right? Or it's some crazy jungle medicine man magic. I wanna know where it's from. Give me some fucking origins, y'all!

Rather than continue with the classic board game seen in the original Jumanji film starring Robin Williams, Jumanji: Welcome to The Jungle decided to take a more modern approach and trap the players inside a video game. It was a fresh way to reinvigorate the series that clearly paid off big time, and Sony is eager to capitalize on this momentum as soon as possible and take this franchise all the way to the moon...literally. At least that's where star Jack Black wants to see things go in Jumanji 3.

In an interview with MTV, Jack Black said that he wants to see this mother go to space. The origins of the Jumanji game have never been explained, and Black thinks that alien technology is the only plausible answer. Well, that or crazy jungle medicine man magic. Basically, Black just wants the origins of the game to be explained, which isn't such a bad idea for the third film in the series.

While we don't really need to know the origin of the game to enjoy the movies, the game was destroyed at the end of Jumanji 2, so unless the game can magically rebuild itself (it probably can) then someone would have to make a new one, right? We know next to nothing about Jumanji 3 other than Black, Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Hart, and Karen Gillan are all returning. As long as you have those four actors and a fun story, this movie could probably be about anything and people will go see it.

It's unclear if Jumanji 3 is heading for that big jungle in the stars, but the movie is set for a release date of Christmas 2019. That puts it right in the crosshairs of Star Wars Episode IX, making for one interesting December.

New Godzilla: King Of The Monsters Video Pokes Fun At Ghidorah’s Name

New Godzilla: King Of The Monsters Video Pokes Fun At Ghidorah’s Name

If you thought 2014’s Godzilla and 2017’s Kong: Skull Island were crazy, Godzilla: King of the Monsters is kicking things up several notches on the chaos scale. This latest MonsterVerse entry is introducing three new monsters (that we know of), including the three-headed King Ghidorah. While Ghidroah is arguably the most dangerous of Godzilla’s new foes, a new preview for King of the Monsters takes some shots at the beast’s unusual name.

T here’s no question that King Ghidorah is a towering monstrosity and looking to be the biggest threat the MonsterVerse has introduced yet, but that doesn’t take away from the fact that it has a weird name. This Godzilla: King of the Monsters TV spot highlights that when one of the characters asks about its “catchy name.” Kyle Chandler’s Mark Russell doesn’t understand it right away and Thomas Middleditch’s Sam Coleman notes how the name sounds like ‘Gonorrhea.’ They’d better hope that Ghidorah doesn’t have enhanced hearing on top of its many other abilities.

Weird name aside, King Ghidorah is shaping up to be the biggest threat in Godzilla: King of the Monsters, which is saying a lot given how much destruction we’ve seen in the footage shown so far. Ghidorah is joined by Rodan and Mothra, though it should be noted that the latter is usually depicted as a benevolent creature in the Toho monster movies from Japan, so perhaps it won’t be giving humanity too much trouble. Regardless, in keeping with the monster’s numerous appearance in the Toho movies over the decades, King of the Monsters’ King Ghidorah is described as Godzilla’s arch-nemesis, so it’s a good bet that the sequel’s climactic confrontation will be between these two.

Picking up five years after the events of Godzilla with the entire world now knowing about the existence of the Titans, Godzilla: King of the Monsters sees Monarch crossing paths with all of these monsters as they vie for supremacy and put humanity’s very existence at stake. We can at least take comfort knowing that Earth won’t be destroyed since Godzilla vs. Kong arrives next year, but there will definitely be mass casualties due to these monsters wreaking havoc, many of which we can likely lay at Kind Ghidorah’s feet… or wings.

Along with the previously mentioned actors, Godzilla: King of the Monsters’ main cast includes Millie Bobby Brown, Vera Farmiga, Ken Watanabe, Sally Hawkins, Bradley Whitford, Charles Dance, Aisha Hinds, O’Shea Jackson Jr., David Strathairn and Zhang Ziyi. Each of King Ghidorah’s heads is played a different actor: Jason Liles, Alan Maxson and Richard Dorton.

Directed by Michael Dougherty, who also co-wrote the script with Zach Shields, Godzilla: King of the Monsters rampages into theaters on May 31. If you’re interested in learning what other movies are coming out later this year, head to out 2019 release schedule.

Us Reviews: What CinemaBlend Thought Of The New Jordan Peele Horror Movie

Us Reviews: What CinemaBlend Thought Of The New Jordan Peele Horror Movie
Lupita Nyong'o in Us

Jordan Peele's first movie was as big a success as any writer/director could have possibly hoped for. It was a massive box office success, it got audiences talking, and it won him an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay. That's a tough act to follow, but now Peele is back with his brand new movie. Us hit theaters today and it had a lot to live up to. However, in the opinion of most of us here at CinemaBlend, Peele has another huge winner.

I wrote the official review and there really wasn't enough good that I could say about Us, I gave the movie 4.5 stars out of five. It is a chilling horror movie while being an equally chilling allegory. Much like Get Out, it's a movie that leaves you questioning not only the world around you, but also yourself.

Once again, as in Get Out, Jordan Peele finds the greatest way to scare the hell out of you is to make you take a good hard look at yourself.

Us follows a family of four on vacation in Santa Cruz when their peaceful time together is interrupted by another family of four, a quartet of twisted doppelgangers who have arrived to torture and torment their opposites. The who and the why of it all is the stuff of serious spoilers, but needless to say it's all pretty terrifying.

But there's also so much more to it than that. There's a lot to potentially dissect about Us. While the movie works as a straight forward horror movie if that's all you're looking for, there are many layers to what Jordan Peele has put in front of us. Some are obvious, others less so. This makes it the sort of movie you'll want to run out and talk to people about as soon as you see it. CinemaBlend Managing Director Sean O'Connell recommends that you not only see Us, but you see it with friends...twice...

Us proves that Jordan Peele isn't a one-hit wonder. It also proves that, after only two films, he's already operating on a higher level than most seasoned storytellers. Going more "horror" than the socio-political commentary of Get Out, Us tells a twisted tale of doppelgängers and home invasions, suggesting that the enemies who should scare us the most might just be ourselves. See it with a group, because you're going to want to discuss this with people immediately after you see it... and then go see it again.

Is there anything that can even be said about Jordan Peele that hasn't already been said? The man had already proven himself to be one of the smartest comedians out there, and he shows how closely comedy and horror are truly linked by proving he's the best working today when it comes to horror movies. As the creative force behind, now, two of the best movies of the last two years, We know Jordan Peele is everything he appears to be.

Sr. Movie Contributor Mike Reyes is another who sings the praises of Jordan Peele, but is also sure to give a shout out to the real MVP of Us, star Lupita Nyong'o.

With Us, writer/director Jordan Peele only further cements his position as a storyteller and satirist of the highest order. His story of doppelgangers out for revenge dives deep into some dark waters of paranoia and social commentary, but does so in such a manner that it never forgets to entertain its audience. Furthermore, Lupita N'yongo delivers a masterclass of acting, as her dual role is the centerpiece of a complex film that's only going to get better with age and repeated views.

Jordan Peele's previous directorial effort Get Out, was one of those films that many have a tough time classifying. While most would certainly call it a horror movie, it was one made without some of the elements that many would closely associate with the genre. Us, is a much more straight forward horror movie, as it has monsters and more on-screen violence, but that doesn't mean it's an easier movie to categorize. CinemaBlend's Braden Roberts loved the way Us was able to be more than one thing, and be all of them so well.

Jordan Peele’s Us is a trapeze act that manages to juggle horror, thriller and even comedic elements on an increasingly intense scale. To place a single genre on the film would be wrong as it’s a harmonious amalgam of fear and delight. Not to mention Luipta Nyong’o, whose performance alone is reason enough to get out and see Us in theaters.

Of course, while most of us who saw Us loved it, there is rarely complete agreement when it comes to art, especially here at CinemaBlend. Product Manager Cody Beck just wasn't able to connect with Us in the way that the rest of us were. While he certainly appreciated various elements of the film, he felt those elements just weren't able to come together in a satisfying way.

Us definitely did a beautiful job of telling a story, it was just a story that never fully pulled me in. Peele’s sophomore film was intense and brutal, yet also funny and full of great pop culture references spanning decades and while the story itself was unique and clearly symbolic of real-world issues, it was also just a bit too bizarre for me to fully accept. I still recommend horror fans check it out and I’m still just as eager to see his upcoming reboot of The Twilight Zone.

While the praise might not be universal, it is largely positive. Jordan Peele certainly has another thrilling movie on his hands that is going to get audiences talking. If the box office estimates are any indication, it will also be a huge financial success as well. If we all run out to see it more than once, as many are suggesting is worth doing, that's only going to make it that much more of a success. This is the one everybody is going to be talking about, and it's one you're going to want to ask everybody about after you see it.

Us is in theaters now.

Sean Gunn in Guardians 2

The Marvel Cinematic Universe is a fairly well-oiled machine at this point, with 21 movies and a decade of filmmaking under its belt. The studio has especially hit its stride with Phase Three, as every single release has been a box office and critical success. But there were a few bumps in the road, especially James Gunn's firing and eventual reinstatement as director of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.

James Gunn was fired in July after offensive tweets from a decade ago resurfaced, and Disney attempted to distance itself from that narrative. But considering how much of Gunn is infused with the Guardians franchise, it put the future of the threequel in jeopardy. James' brother Sean Gunn plays Kraglin and stands in for Rocket during filming, and therefore discovered the news early. As he tells it:

I was aware before it was announced, a little bit before. I know that they were, they wanted to get the timing right in terms of when the announcement was made. Like I was saying before, in Hollywood, things don't ever happen until they happen, you know? So I was aware that it was probably going to happen, but I was never sure until I actually saw it in the news. But I was pretty sure for, let's just say for a little while.

The public was shocked by James Gunn's return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but it doesn't look like Sean Gunn was. He saw the plan in the works for some time before it was official, although he found out about the final decision in the news just like everyone else. I guess it pays to be related to the subject of such a major story.

Sean Gunn's comments to Comic Book show that the deal with James Gunn went back quite some time. It came out of nowhere for the public, but was likely a long process filled with red tape and legalese. It was certainly a bold choice for Marvel to do an about-face, and bring Gunn back into the fold. What's more, the director recently signed on to helm The Suicide Squad for DC, so there was probably extra contracts and scheduling issues as part of the deal.

It stands to reason that Sean Gunn would be privy to more information than most, as its his sibling who is the mind behind the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise. On top of hearing about it from his brother, Sean is also an important cast member of the property. While he's not a bonafide member of the member, Kraglin has had a supporting role in the first two movies. What's more, Sean also does the motion capture work for Rocket on set, with Bradley Cooper eventually stepping into the studio to record dialogue, and extensive visual affects bringing the character to life.

Sean Gunn also played Rocket during Avengers: Endgame filming, with the blockbuster arriving April 26th. In the meantime, check out our 2019 release list to plan your next trip to the movies.

SPOILER WARNING: The following article contains spoilers for Ant-Man And The Wasp. If you have not yet seen the film, and don't wish to know major, important details about the ending, please bookmark this page and come back after your screening!Peyton Reed's Ant-Man And The Wasp is a film ultimately ripe with comedic premises -- from the nature of the ensemble of wacky heroes, to the funny applications of the unique power sets -- but one unexpected moment even allows for a bit of body swapping humor. Janet Van Dyne (Michelle Pfeiffer) makes an attempt to reach out to her husband (Michael Douglas) and daughter (Evangeline Lilly) from the Quantum Realm, and the way she does it is by essentially possessing Scott Lang (Paul Rudd). It makes for a hilarious sequence, and it's one that I recently had the opportunity to ask the star about:

Late last month I took part in the domestic press day for Ant-Man And The Wasp in Pasadena, California, and during my interview with Paul Rudd I took the opportunity to ask about the scene where Scott Lang "channels" Janet. The actor smiled recounting the sequence, and acknowledged that the idea was kind of a "big swing" for the production, given that the silliness could have potentially undercut the emotionality. Still, he clearly had a lot of fun filming it on set with Michael Douglas and Evangeline Lilly, and revealed that they internally referred to it as the "All Of Me Scene" (a reference to the 1984 Carl Reiner comedy that has a character played by Steve Martin essentially possessed by the soul of the character played by Lily Tomlin).

The scene being discussed here is certainly one of the most inherently broad comedic sequences that we've seen in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but it should be recognized that the larger tone of Ant-Man And The Wasp legitimizes it and makes it work. The blockbuster was specifically designed as a breath-of-fresh-air comedy after the hyper, large-scale drama featured in Avengers: Infinity War, and as a result a key moment where Scott Lang channels Janet Van Dyne very much fits in with the larger oeuvre. Like much of the film, it gets a hearty laugh (especially at the very end when Scott realizes that he's holding Hank Pym's hand), but it also drives the story forward to its exciting finale.

Ant-Man and the Wasp , which also stars Lawrence Fishburne, Hannah John-Kamen, Walton Goggins, Randall Park, Michael Pena, and more, is now in theaters everywhere nationwide, and this is far from the end of our coverage. We have plenty more features and stories coming your way in the next few days, so be sure to stay tuned here on CinemaBlend.

In Ant-Man and the Wasp, the titular pair work with Hank Pym to retrieve Janet van Dyne from the quantum realm. Talks for a sequel to Ant-Man began shortly after that film was released. Ant-Man and the Wasp was officially announced in October 2015, with Rudd and Lilly returning to reprise their roles.

During the press conference for Ant-Man & The Wasp, which Screen Rant attended, the veteran actor opened up about channeling Pfeiffer's Janet van Dyne during one of the most bizarre moments in the movie. When asked specifically about the wild sequence, during which Rudd must portray Pfeiffer's Janet interacting with Hank and Hope, Rudd responded:

John Wick 4? Keanu Reeves Will Continue 'As Far As The Audience Wants To Go'

John Wick 4? Keanu Reeves Will Continue 'As Far As The Audience Wants To Go'
John Wick Keanu Reeves guns lots of guns

How many times is John Wick thinkin' he's back? Mr. Wick is in an extremely tight spot in the upcoming John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum, but it sounds like he probably makes it out alive. Is that a spoiler alert or pretty much a given? Maybe it's a misdirect. We won't know until the movie opens in May, but Keanu Reeves said he's up for making as many more John Wick movies as you want:

As far as my legs can take me. As far as the audience wants to go.

So this is up to YOU, dear ticket-buyer. Keanu Reeves' John Wick 3 co-star Ian McShane recently said he could see John Wick continuing for another 10 years. So, yeah, that sounds like a good sign for John Wick 4. There's also that TV show following The Continental supposedly coming to Starz, but it's been a while since we got any solid updates.

Keanu Reeves shared his "as far as the audience wants to go" quotes with GQ, in the same interview where he talked about being put in movie jail after rejecting Speed 2. (He deserved a medal for that decision.)

Keanu also recently recapped the previous two John Wick movies, in case you're not up-to-speed on the wife-and-puppy love that brought his hitman out of retirement, and the global contract out on his life that currently has him on the run. Reeves explained the existential crisis at work in John Wick:

He's got this beautiful, tragic conundrum - these two selves. The John who was married, and John Wick, the assassin. John wants to be free. But the only way he knows how is through John Wick. And John Wick keeps fucking killing people and breaking rules. We're really watching a person fight for their life and their soul.

The John Wick films are directed by Chad Stahelski, who first met Keanu when working as the actor's stunt double in The Matrix movies. Stahelski praised 54-year-old Reeves' commitment to his roles:

I don't know anyone that puts more into the game, collaboratively, physically, intellectually. I've never experienced anyone that could have survived [The Matrix]. It just took a different type of person. To be open to that. To allow yourself to be constantly soaking wet, sore, tired, beaten up, for years. [...] Now fast-forward to 20 years later, and you've got your former stunt double directing you. So he knows what you're capable of. And his expectations are even more psychotic than the last decade and a half of directors you've worked for. I can say, I know you have more. Don't lie to me. Get up. And Keanu, 20 years later, is holding that up! That's not just physical. That's mental. That's a certain kind of mental fortitude.

I can see Keanu Reeves continuing that mental fortitude through more John Wick movies, but the box office and reception for John Wick 3 will certainly play a role. The early opening weekend estimates aren't too shabby, but I think they're too low. We'll see.

For now, you can watch a full scene from John Wick 3, with John trying to keep his new dog safe at The Continental hotel while John continues to run for his own life. Keanu Reeves previously said he wanted two specific things to be in Parabellum, and he got them both. He also apparently got a lot of rain, since the New York clips are just drenched. But we will get to see John Wick dry out in the desert with Halle Berry's Sofia.

John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum (let Keanu explain the title) opens in theaters May 17 as one of the many films worth keeping track of with our handy 2019 movie release date schedule.
