Neil Armstrong Movie First Man Has Screened, Here Are The Early Reactions

As the summer months come to a close, the time has come to look forward to the fall movie season, and the inevitable Oscar bating that will occur with major studios. Director Damien Chazelle has been recognized quite a bit by The Academy, with both his acclaimed drama Whiplash and movie musical La La Land. He's once again collaborating with actor Ryan Reynolds for the Neil Armstrong biopic First Man, which is set for a wide release this coming October. First Man just screened at Venice Film Festival, allowing a few choice outlets to review the film. And overall, reception seems to be very warm for both Chazelle and Gosling, possibly teasing another winning Awards Season.

One of the biggest questions surrounding First Man is how much of Neil Armstrong's actual mission to The Moon would be part of the narrative. Are we talking big space action sequences, or simple shots of Armstrong in the cockpit? It appears the answer would be the former, according to THR. As the review raved,

The missions themselves are deftly handled set pieces, with tentative triumphs often followed by potentially fatal glitches that call on Armstrong, in particular, to show cool-headed quick thinking in a crisis. The historical footnote of a fatal cockpit fire that claimed the lives of three astronauts during a Cape Canaveral test provides a moving dramatic marker.

It looks like Neil Armstrong's career as an astronaut will be portrayed as thrilling, complicated, and even deadly. It's a notoriously dangerous profession, and Armstrong's colleagues lost their lives attempting to travel into space. This will help give First Man extremely high stakes, no doubt providing thrilling sequences in the process. But not all of First Man's early praise has been around the spectacle of the project. Indeed, Ryan Gosling's performance getting mention as well, particularly how subtle his characterization of Neil Armstrong is. According to Independent.co, the actor is extremely understated.

Gosling manages it superbly. Reunited with La La Land director Damien Chazelle, he guides us through eight years of space flights, mishaps and tragedies leading up to the 1969 landing. The tension is constant and told not through the usual paraphernalia of space movies, but often through Gosling's face. It is almost expressionless. Almost. The barest sign of a tremor around his mouth, or a sign of hope or fear in his piercing blue eyes convey a great deal.

Variety's review also praised how First Man is able to transport the audience into the POV of an Astronaut, and how the movie will go full tilt from its opening scene:

In First Man, Chazelle restricts the action almost entirely to the point-of-view of the astronauts themselves: the things they literally see and hear during their missions (the movie eschews panoramic shots they aren't privy to), along with what they're thinking and feeling. From the dizzy and volatile opening sequence, in which Armstrong, as a test pilot in 1961, rides an X-15 up into the black clouds, ripping through the air to the point that he almost can't get back (mission control: "Neil, you're bouncing off the atmosphere"), the movie is tethered to everything the men experience: the random shards of sky looming up out of cramped windows, the topsy-turvy angles, the whole existential inside-the-cockpit zooming-into-the-void craziness of it all.

Of course, it isn't all praise for First Man. While The Guardian still gave it an overall positive review, it claims that Damien Chazelle could have framed the story better, ultimately resulting in a more powerful film.

It is also a film that downgrades the patriotic fervour of the landing. Armstrong and his comrades are certainly shown to be deeply nettled by news of initial Soviet triumphs in the space race, but Chazelle abolishes the planting of the stars and stripes on the moon. And then, of course, there is that remarkable phrase with which this cautious, unpoetic man delighted the world and astonished his comrades: 'That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind' (Didn't he mean 'a man' -- or is that what he said and we misheard?) Again, a slightly less reverent film would have shown Armstrong shyly honing that phrase, maybe going through pencil-and-paper drafts. Not here. The mystery of its composition is left untouched.

Ultimately, we'll have to wait a few months before moviegoers and the general public get to see First Man for themselves. Ryan Gosling's Neil Armstrong biopic will arrive in theaters on October 12, 2018. In the meantime, check out our 2018 release list to plan your next trip to the movies.

Walt Disney World Reveals Major Changes Coming To Epcot

Walt Disney World's 50th anniversary is only a couple of years away and the massive resort is planning a lot of big changes and new experiences for the event. Today, Disney Parks revealed some new details about the previously announced changes coming to Epcot. In addition to an entirely new entrance plaza, the park will be receiving a brand new pavilion, focusing on "the power of play."

The brand new pavilion will be located in the space previously occupied by the Wonders of Life pavilion and while it has yet to be given an official name, it's being described as a space full of games and interactive activities.

The image above is an artist's rendering of what the new play pavilion will look like. It's being designed to resemble a city, with each building, designed to look like a hotel or movie theater or other building you expect to find in a city, seemingly leading to a different sort of activity. No details were revealed regarding what sorts of things guests will actually be able to do in the new pavilion, but Disney promises they will "first-of-their-kind" experiences.

It's also promised that interaction with Disney characters will be involved, so expect at least some of the activities to be themed after various Disney properties. Cue the IPcot, comments.

While many were sad to see the Wonders of Life Pavilion go, what was even more sad was that after it closed, nothing happened with the space. Wonder of Life has been closed since 2007 and other than opening for occasional seasonal events as the renamed Festival Center, the space has largely sat vacant.

It's nice to know that something is going to finally happen with this underutilized area. While we'll have to wait to see what exactly guests will be doing in this new pavilion, it certainly sounds like an interesting idea.

In addition to the new pavilion, new concept art was also released which shows what the Epcot entrance plaza will look like when Walt Disney World's 50th anniversary comes along. Gone are the monolithic Leave A Legacy photos, in their place, is a lot more green space and a newly designed fountain.

Fans of the Leave A Legacy photos don't need to worry as the pictures aren't being taken out entirely. Instead, they'll be moved to outside the gateway of the park, so you'll be able to see them just before entering Epcot, rather than just after.

In some ways, the changes to the Epcot entrance aren't really new, as the plan is to create something that pays homage to the original Epcot entrance, by adding new twits to the classic concepts.

I recently got back from Walt Disney World and while Epcot is, in general, my favorite park to just hang out in, mostly because the food is amazing, it does have the least exciting entrance area of the four theme parks. It's a lot of concrete and it just isn't as welcoming as the other parks are. While this may be only concept art, it looks a lot more inviting.

These changes are in addition to a number of other major additions to Epcot that have already been announced. A Guardians of the Galaxy roller coaster is currently under construction that will use a unique ride vehicle design creating Disney's first "storytelling" roller coaster. Remys Ratatouille Adventure and a Beauty and the Beast sing-a-long are both being added to the France pavilion. An outer space themed restaurant is being constructed adjacent to the Mission: Space attraction, and a new nighttime fireworks show, Epcot Forever will be making its bow later this year.

People who want to get an early look at the new Epcot will have their chance at the park itself as a Experience Center that will preview the changes is being opened at the Odyssey Events Pavilion.

Beyond the work being finished in time for the Walt Disney World anniversary no timeline has been given on when these projects will be completed, or perhaps more importantly, when they'll get underway. The new entrance area will certainly require closing down a lot of that space while the work is being done, which will mean things at the Epcot entrance will get worse before they get better.

Still, it should all be worth it once we get to see the new and improved Epcot somewhere between now and 2021.

What's Going On With Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3 After James Gunn's Firing

It's been a pretty fast news cycle surrounding the firing and potentially rumored rehiring of Guardians of the Galaxy director, James Gunn. With all of the developments taking course over the span of a couple of weeks, the details can be lost, especially as time goes by. So we here at CinemaBlend thought it'd be a good idea to retrace the entire history of Gunn's dismissal, as well as where the project is now, and how the former Troma Films stalwart got his big break in the first place. Here now is James Gunn's history with the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise, and where things stand for the third film, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.

James Gunn's Writing Career Before Guardians Of The GalaxyJames Gunn's career in film began as a screenwriter / actor at Lloyd Kaufman's legendary B-movie factory, Troma films. 1995 saw him write his first film under their auspices, Tromeo and Juliet, and in a short five years, Gunn saw himself write his first indie movie outside of the company. Titled The Specials, the film which starred Rob Lowe, Judy Greer, Thomas Haden-Church, and his frequent collaborator and brother, Sean Gunn. Not too long after that first taste of superhero action-comedy, Gunn's first big studio credits came rolling, through the 1-2 punch of 2002's Scooby Doo and the 2004 remake Dawn of the Dead. Both films were hits, and two huge results came from their success - Gunn's writing of Scooby Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed for release in 2004, and his writing/directing debut in 2006 through Universal's production of Slither.

James Gunn's Directing Career Before Guardians Of The GalaxyWhile blockbuster success eluded Slither, it kept James Gunn in the eyes of genre fans who had an eye for talent. Not to mention, it would also introduce him in a professional capacity to two other future Guardians of the Galaxy actors, Gregg Henry (who played Star-Lord's grandfather) and Michael Rooker (who eventually played Yondu.) Going on to be a cult classic, Slither helped Gunn go indie yet again, through a series of shorts he'd produce for various functions. But ultimately, super powered destiny would call upon him again, as Super was born in 2010, telling the story of Rainn Wilson's Frank - a would be crime fighter who thinks violence is the answer against organized crime. Critical and commercial success missed James Gunn yet again, but that fabled third time was about to be the charm.

Landing Guardians Of The GalaxyAround the same time as Super's quiet independent release, Marvel Studios producer Kevin Feige started developing Guardians of the Galaxy to potentially join the still growing Marvel Cinematic Universe. With a script already in the works by in-house writer Nicole Perlman, the outlaw team-up picture started to take rudimentary form, which eventually lead to the studio looking into directors in 2012. It came down to several candidates: James Gunn, Ant-Man's Peyton Reed, Captain Marvel's Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, and The Avengers' Joss Whedon. When all was said and done, Gunn won out, and took up re-writing duties to work the original Perlman draft into what would eventually become Guardians of the Galaxy. A cast was assembled, with the production starting in 2013 for the film's August 1, 2014 release date. What happened next would change everything for Gunn and Marvel Studios alike.

The Success Of The Guardians Of The Galaxy FranchiseWhen it was released in 2014, Guardians Of The Galaxy broke box office records for the month of August pretty quick. Not only was it the widest August release since G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra, it also broke the record for August opening weekend grosses, with other benchmarks soon to fall. Emboldened by the success of what was a B-tier title in the Marvel Comics canon, the movie ultimately rang up a beautiful $773.3 million international gross against a $232.3 million budget. Disney and Gunn would re-team almost immediately for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, which would itself bring in $863.8 million worldwide on a $200 million budget. The stage was set for an obvious third film to be made, and Gunn knew the characters so well that he gave some notes to Anthony and Joe Russo for the team's inclusion in Avengers: Infinity War.

The Firing Of James GunnDuring James Gunn's early career, the days of Troma and indie filmmaking, he had a bit of a reputation for getting really edgy. This was reflected nowhere better than on his Twitter feed, where the 2008-2009 timeframe was a hot bed of extreme jokes in bad taste. While Gunn has apologized for the tweets, it didn't stop them from making headlines and causing outrage. That ultimately lead to Disney firing Gunn on / around July 19th, just before he was set to take the stage at San Diego Comic-Con to announce a project he was working on with Sony. His Comic-Con appearance was cancelled, and his last round of tweeting on the 19th of July was another apology for his past remarks. His Twitter feed has been radio silent since then.

How The Cast Reacted to James Gunn's FiringThe first cast member to react to James Gunn's firing from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 has continued to be the most vocal. Dave Bautista, best known as Drax in the Guardians franchise, issued a tweet shortly after Gunn's initial firing, letting everyone to know that he was not only against the firing, but very much pro James Gunn.
