Godzilla 2: What We Know So Far About King Of The Monsters

Godzilla has been a pop culture icon for decades, but when it comes to fully American productions centered around the monster, there have only been two undertakings. The first, in 1998, did not fare well either critically or commercially, thus eliminating any plans to spawn a series. Fortunately, the 2014 reboot was better received, ranking at 74% on Rotten Tomatoes and collecting nearly $530 million worldwide. With a performance like that, it's understandable that shortly after the movie's release, a sequel was ordered: Godzilla 2, officially titled Godzilla: King of the Monsters. Godzilla has led multiple movies in Japan, but this marks the first time in the United States that the giant reptile's adventures will continue past one movie.

Godzilla: King of the Monsters (which was shot in Atlanta, Georgia) is finally upon us, and there's a fair amount of information to chew on concerning the sequel if you can't get out to see it right away, or aren't sure if you want to continue this journey with the Titans. That's why we've created this handy guide so you can browse through what's been announced about the blockbuster, from when it's coming out to who's working on it both on and off camera to how it will connect to a grander shared universe filled with other giant and powerful monsters.

What Have We Seen From Godzilla: King Of The Monsters?

Luckily, we've had plenty of trailers and teasers for the new blockbuster at this point, which show off some of the crazy destruction, massive action sequences and intense Titan fights that we'll be treated to on the big screen. As you can see above, the final trailer shows us just how bad things are, and how much we need Godzilla to help protect us against some of the other Titans.

What Is The Godzilla: King Of The Monsters Release Date?

Thankfully for Godzilla fans, the scheduling changes for Godzilla: King of the Monsters haven't been too drastic. It was originally supposed to come out on June 8, 2018, but after Legendary Entertainment moved production of Kong: Skull Island from Universal to Warner Bros., the giant ape was deemed to be the priority. Godzilla: King of the Monsters was subsequently moved to March 22, 2019. Now it's set for release on May 31, 2019, putting it up against Rocketman and Ma that opening weekend. As far as overall May competition goes, there's a lot packed in, including Detective Pikachu, John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum and Aladdin. But, when you're opening in the first summer movie month, thats expected.

What Is The Godzilla: King Of The Monsters Rating?

Godzilla: King of the Monsters finally got its official rating from the MPAA (Motion Picture Association of America) a few weeks back. And, it did get the rating that was expected, which is the same one that Godzilla did: PG-13. The 2014 blockbuster was rated that way for "intense sequences of destruction, mayhem and creature violence," and Godzilla: King of the Monsters will feature the same elements. So, this is a movie that can also be enjoyed by younger fans...but not too young. PG-13 is right in the sweet spot. Plus, that's what fellow MonsterVerse (more on that later) entry Kong: Skull Island was rated, too.

Who Is The Godzilla: King Of The Monsters Director?

Gareth Edwards' directing credits include End Day and Monster, but Godzilla was the blockbuster that earned him widespread recognition. The original plan was for him to return for Godzilla: King of the Monsters after helming Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. However, in May 2016, it was announced that Edwards would no longer direct the sequel, as he wanted to step back from overseeing big productions and focus on smaller-scale projects. It wasn't until January 2017 that his replacement was hired: Michael Dougherty, the man who directed Trick 'r Treat and Krampus. But that isn't the only way he's involved in the sequel...

Who Are The Godzilla: King Of The Monsters Writers?

Months before Michael Dougherty had been tapped to direct Godzilla: King of the Monsters, he had already been brought aboard to co-write the flick with Zach Shields. They succeed Godzilla screenwriter, Max Borenstein, who was originally supposed to return, but later dropped out. Dougherty's notable writing credits include X2: X-Men United and Superman Returns, while Zach Shields has previously worked with Dougherty on Krampus. Given the horror background these two have, there's a distinct chance that Godzilla: King of the Monsters will have scarier elements, though not to the point that the movie will rest comfortably in the horror genre. To be fair, watching a giant fire-breathing monster destroy cities is scary enough, but perhaps there will be added suspense to make Godzilla: King of the Monsters more captivating. A good sequel retains what made the first movie work so well, but also incorporates new material to keep things fresh.

What Is Godzilla: King Of The Monsters About?

Well, we're in big trouble now. After the events of 2014's Godzilla, even more of the Titans began to wake up and come out of their hiding places, leaving massive destruction in their wake. At the start of Godzilla: King of the Monsters, 17 of these dangerous beasts have come forward (with more expected to surface soon), with those who work at the crypto-zoological agency Monarch realizing that they're moving as a pack and following a leader.

That leader just so happens to the the three-headed monster King Ghidorah, ancient nemesis of Godzilla. We need to take out Ghidorah to get the rest of the awakened Titans to stop their reigns of terror, and, guess who seems like the best hope for that?

After defeating the MUTOs (Massive Unidentified Terrestrial Organisms) that were the "real" villains of the first film, Godzilla rested in the rubble from his giant battle for a bit and then returned to the sea. Unfortunately, humanity isn't having much luck fighting back against these nearly indestructible creatures, so we hatch a plan to locate Godzilla's ocean-floor hiding place, wake him up and get him to, once again, fight the good fight against his fellow Titans as we do everything we can to help out.

Though, I have to say, bothering a creature like Godzilla seems like a bad idea that could easily wipe out a chunk of a country's military force and /or population should he wake up on the wrong side of his monster bed.

Who Are The New Godzilla: King Of The Monsters Characters?

The first actor who was cast for Godzilla: King of the Monsters was Millie Bobby Brown. She's best known for her breakout role as Eleven, nicknamed "El," on the Netflix series Stranger Things. In the show, she plays a telekinetic girl who was kept in a government laboratory, experimented on, and who was soon revealed to be able to make contact with the alternate dimension unofficially known as the "Upside Down." So yeah, Brown is well-versed in the realms of sci-fi and horror.

Brown will play Madison Russell, and be one of the central characters in Godzilla: King of the Monsters, along with two other newcomers: Kyle Chandler and Vera Farmiga, who will play her parents Dr. Mark Russell and Dr. Emma Russell, who are both working to stop the Titans. Aside from the obvious danger involved in living under the conditions found in the film, there will be other familial strife for the Russell's. Chandler recently revealed that one of the reasons his character hates the Titans is that "they caused havoc with my family," and it seems like a great loss came from that havoc.

The other new cast members include Ziyi Zhang (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon) as Dr. Ilene Chen, Bradley Whitford (The West Wing, Get Out) as Dr. Rick Stanton, Charles Dance (Game of Thrones) as Jonah Alan, Thomas Middleditch (Silicon Valley) as Sam Coleman, Aisha Hinds (9-1-1) as Colonel Diane Foster, O'Shea Jackson Jr. (Straight Outta Compton) as Chief Warrant Officer Barnes and Anthony Ramos (A Star Is Born) as Staff Sergeant Martinez. As you can probably tell from all the doctors and military personnel in that lineup, all of these new characters seem to be actively helping Monarch stop the Titans.

Who Are The Returning Godzilla Characters?

So far, only three of the actors who appeared in 2014's Godzilla have been confirmed to return for the sequel. Aaron Taylor-Johnson said back in 2015 that he was unsure if he'd be back, and that it would depend on whether director Gareth Edwards stuck around or not. Seeing as how Edwards did not return to the Godzilla fold, we can probably expect that Taylor-Johnson won't be around, even in a small capacity. That will likely also leave out any appearance by Elizabeth Olsen's Elle Brody (we've certainly not seen either of them in any of the trailers), but it turns out that Ken Watanabe's Dr. Ishiro Serizawa will be back.

Ishiro was the main representative from Monarch, the organization that studies Earth's monsters. Given how Monarch is the main connective thread of the MonsterVerse (more on that in the next section). Not only does Ishiro have experience studying Godzilla, but he can hopefully provide insight on the new monsters that emerge. Hopefully, Ishiro will become what Nick Fury and Phil Coulson are / were to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He's not the focus, but he's integral to shedding light on these mysterious beings.

The other returning characters / actors are Sally Hawkins (The Shape of Water) as Dr. Vivienne Graham and David Strathairn (The Blacklist, Billions) as Admiral William Stenz. While it would have been nice to see how the Brody family was faring after everything they went through in the first film, their story was wrapped up pretty well, so it was never necessary for them to show up again. It makes a lot of sense then, that the action of Godzilla: King of the Monsters would find another family to focus on amid all the Titan uproar, and the film is doing just that.

How Does The MonsterVerse Fit Into Godzilla: King Of The Monsters?

When 2014's Godzilla came out, it was a self-contained story that left room for a sequel later down the line. That's standard for many blockbusters, especially ones based on existing intellectual property. But with the rising popularity of cinematic universes, thanks to Marvel, Warner Bros. decided they wanted in on the action. Legendary Entertainment had already acquired the rights to creatures like Mothra, Rodan and King Ghidorah after Godzilla was released, and in September 2015, it was announced that Kong: Skull Island would be developed at Warner Bros. instead of Universal.

The following month, it was confirmed that the giant ape lives in the same world as the fire-breathing reptile, which has been dubbed the MonsterVerse. Kong: Skull Island takes place in the early 1970s, four decades before the present day Godzilla events. However, there are several references to Monarch, which isn't surprising since it was only two decades earlier that those nuclear weapons were dropped on Godzilla.

So, what does all this mean for Godzilla: King of the Monsters? Well, whatever happens in the sequel, you can count on Godzilla not dying. The following year, on March 13, he's going up against Kong in Godzilla vs. Kong. This will be the first time these two have clashed in an American setting and Michael Dougherty, who directed King of the Monsters and also co-wrote Godzilla vs. Kong, has described the film as a “potential underdog fight,” which will see a much more mature King Kong needing to use all his primate intelligence and skills to defend himself from the massive lizard.

It stands to reason that Godzilla: King of the Monsters' ending will pave the way for this epic battle. Who knows, maybe Kong himself might make a cameo appearance. There already seems to be a major connection brewing between Kong: Skull Island and King of the Monsters that will explain how these creatures remained hidden for so long. Then there's that Skull Island after-credits scene, which teased every monster we know we're going to see in this film. It does make sense that a major tease for the next film in the MonsterVerse would come at some point during King of the Monsters, we just don't know what it might be right now.

Bryce Dallas Howard Really Wants The Original Actors Back For Jurassic World 3

Last year, Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom finally gave fans a taste of what they’d been asking for with the return, albeit in cameo form, of Jeff Goldblum’s Dr. Ian Malcolm. Now, with Jurassic World 3 set to close out the trilogy that began in 2015 with Jurassic World, there is a hope that we will see the whole trio of Jurassic Parks actors return. And we’re not alone because actress Bryce Dallas Howard really wants the original actors back for Jurassic World 3, as she explained:

Yes, very much so. If that happens, I don't know. I don't know what's been confirmed or whatever, but I'll blink if it's happening and maybe.

Bryce Dallas Howard, who plays Claire Dearing in the Jurassic World films, seems to want the original Jurassic Park trio of Laura Dern, Jeff Goldblum and Sam Neill to return for Jurassic World 3 as much as the rest of us, and perhaps more so because it would give her a chance to work with them.

In fact, in her comments to MTV News about the possibility, she seemed positively giddy at the prospect. And who could blame her? The original Jurassic Park is an iconic film and one that Bryce Dallas Howard, like so many of us, presumably grew up with. So of course she is all in on that trio coming back for more dino droppings and chaos theory.

This isn’t the first time Bryce Dallas Howard has championed this idea either. The Rocketman actress has spoken in the past about how she didn’t get a chance to actually work with Jeff Goldblum in Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom because her character never interacted with Ian Malcom. She has also said that if she could bring back one of the original cast to the franchise, it would be Laura Dern’s Ellie Sattler.

To Bryce Dallas Howard’s delight, she may get her wish. In her comments to MTV News, she mentions that she doesn’t know what has been confirmed, playing it coy and not wanting to say too much. But when she says “I’ll blink if it’s happening,” she purposefully blinks a bunch. It’s not the same as an official press release, and we can’t say for sure yet, but that would seem to indicate that things are looking good for the original Jurassic Park trio to return for Jurassic World 3.

Jeff Goldblum has also teased Laura Dern’s return in the past and the actress herself has made it plain that she would come back if asked. It makes sense that these three would be brought back now too. Jurassic World 3 isn’t just the concluding chapter of the Jurassic World trilogy, it is also (for now at least) the culmination and end of the Jurassic Park story that began in 1993.

Therefore it would be a bit of a bummer if we didn’t see these beloved characters one last time. Director Colin Trevorrow agrees with that sentiment, which is hopefully good news for Bryce Dallas Howard and Jurassic Park fans.

Avengers: Endgame’s Directors Admit To Adding Extra Footage To Trailers

The Marvel Cinematic Universe is one of the biggest franchises in film history, with a shopping 21 movies dropped in the decade and change since Iron Man arrived on the scene. Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame are the cumulation of those blockbusters, as The Russo Brothers balanced the large ensemble cast for a set of movies with equal parts action and heart.

Aside from the scheduling and storytelling challenges that come with handling such a behemoth pair of movies, The Russo Brothers had to deal with another challenge: how do you market the films without giving away too much? Endgame has only released very brief clips, and once Infinity War hit theaters, there were some shots from the trailer that were noticeably missing from the final cut. Now the brothers have admitted to padding trailers with extra footage, with Joe Russo saying:

We talked about all scales of marketing. The thing that’s most important to us is that we preserve the surprise of the narrative. When I was a kid and saw The Empire Strikes Back at 11am on the day it opened…It so profoundly moved me because I didn’t know a damn thing about the story I was going to watch. We’re trying to replicate that experience.

Tricky move, Russos! In an attempt to keep the secrets of the third and fourth Avengers movies, their marketing material included some footage to throw the fandom off. As such, audiences can have the full experience in theaters, and the blockbusters can have the maximum emotional impact.

Joe Russo's comments to Empire Magazine confirm a long standing fan theory about Infinity War and Endgame. Specifically, the the trailers include footage that serve as red herrings to the film's true contents. Just look at Infinity War's massive trailer. One of the most iconic shots from the marketing shows the Avengers running toward their enemy in the Battle of Wakanda, including The Hulk. But the big green guy was almost completely absent from the final cut, as he refused to resurface after getting beaten by Thanos in the opening scene.

Eventually Bruce Banner donned the Hulkbuster armor to fight against Thanos' forces, and it was obvious that the Infinity War trailer was selling a false bill of goods. This allowed for the subplot surrounding Bruce Banner and The Hulk's dysfunctional relationship was one of the many surprises that the blockbuster brought to theaters.

It should be interesting to see how the Avengers: Endgame trailers ultimately relate to the film's final product. The marketing material for the blockbuster has been pretty sparse, as Marvel Studios was focusing on the release of Captain Marvel. The public still doesn't have an inkling regarding what the film's main plot will entail, as things have been kept purposefully vague in the trailers. Instead, the footage sets up the tone of the movie, and just how bleak things are in the wake of Thanos' finger snap of death.

The Pitch Perfect franchise helped launch several careers, including that of comedian Adam Devine. His role as Bumper became a quick fan favorite element of Pitch Perfect and Pitch Perfect 2, but the Workaholics alum was notably absent from Pitch Perfect 3. That said, during a recent interview with CinemaBlend to talk about his new Netflix film, Game Over, Man!, Devine opened up and told us that there was a tempting pitch for an unmade Pitch Perfect movie that would've involved Bumper getting married to Rebel Wilson's Fat Amy. Devine explained:

I heard a funny pitch of it from Kay Cannon, the writer, who was like tossing around ideas. She was like 'I think it could be funny if you and Rebel got married, and you had won The Voice.' So I was on The Voice at the end of the credits sequence for the second movie, and she was like, 'So you won. Now you're a star. you and Rebel are getting married, and all of the girls are back together after not seeing each other for a while, and you're out of college, and you kind of aren't together for a while.' And Rebel has to deal with me being an egomaniac, but she's still in love with me, but usually, she was the egomaniac and the one who was the star in our relationship and have that turn on her as well. I thought that would've been a cool idea, but I'm fine doing my own thing, and I don't necessarily need to go back, but I think that'd be fun.

That story obviously never happened, but Adam Devine makes it sounds like it would've been the type of tale to bring him back to the Pitch Perfect family. Unlike previous installments in the franchise, this movie would've allowed Bumper to get the upper hand in the relationship with Fat Amy, forcing her to cope with his newfound fame and fortune after winning The Voice. Pitch Perfect crossed with Bridesmaids? Sign us up.

If that story eventually goes on to provide the basis for Pitch Perfect 4 (if such a sequel ever happens), then it will likely have to go through some changes to fit the existing universe. Pitch Perfect 3 already touched on the idea of the Barden Bellas seeing each other for the first time since graduation, and the ending of the film seemingly implied their long-term plans to stick together as friends. Having said that, there's arguably still plenty of fertile ground to explore Bumper and Fat Amy as fiancs.

Of course, it's also worth highlighting the fact that Adam Devine seems content to work on his own material right now. He definitely noted that he would enjoy diving back into the Pitch Perfect well for a fun story, but the actor also pointed out that he's currently doing his "own thing" for the moment. He has found a promising home at Netflix with projects like Game Over, Man! and his recent film When We First Met, so he seems to have a good thing going for himself right now.

Only time will tell if Adam Devine will ever return to the Pitch Perfect franchise. Until that day comes, you can watch out for his latest film when Game Over, Man! debuts on Netflix on March 23. Why Pet Sematary Went With That Ending, According To The Filmmakers

SPOILER WARNING: Major spoilers for the ending of Pet Sematary are in this post! Come back after seeing the 2019 movie, unless you have no plans to see it, in which case read on.

Fans of Stephen King and horror films were treated to Pet Sematary this weekend, which adapts the famed author's most grim and depressing novel. There's already been a lot of discussion over the changes the film made from the book, but the biggest change is definitely its ending. For book readers, it's basically an entirely different ending from the source material, and while I'm sure that fans will be debating whether or not it was for the better, the film's directors have their reasons for making the change.

Okay, big spoilers coming up right now. Last chance to turn away.

Pet Sematary follows the Creed Family, who move to Maine and discover that a cursed Indian burial in the woods behind their house can resurrect the dead. Those brought back are usually pretty murder-y. In the film, 9-year old Ellie Creed is run over by a speeding truck. In his grief, her father Louis buries her behind the pet cemetery, and she basically returns as a murderous demon.

In the books, the resurrected child is 2-year-old Gage, who kills his mother, Rachel, and is put down by Louis, who goes insane and decides to bury Rachel in the woods hoping it'll be better this time. However, in the movie, both Rachel and Louis are killed and resurrected by Ellie, and they become a demon zombie family, with little Gage appearing to be next in line.

That's a significant change, and co-director Kevin Kölsch told Collider that the ending changed organically during filmmaking and it wasn't a change they initially set out to make.

It wasn’t necessarily an idea like, ‘We have to change the ending.’ It was just sort of other things changed within the movie. We changed it from Gage to Ellie, then obviously Ellie then being this character that could now have the awareness to know what’s going on with her and to have conversations about it. It changed the scenes afterward.

There were multiple different versions of the ending that were written and a couple of them were shot. One of them was the original ending in the books, and when they showed both endings to test audiences, the new one got the best response, according to producer Lorenzo Di Bonaventura.

A lot of times with endings, you kind of just let the audience tell you what they’re feeling. We got to screen both of them to people and it just seemed like audiences really responded to that one.

In fact, the filmmakers had three different ideas that were ranked by darkness and they ended up picking the darkest one. They never intended for Pet Sematary to have a happy ending, and screenwriter Jeff Buhler said it gave the film an extra punch.

It felt right to have an ending that had a little punch to it and was kind of a wink. Like, ‘We’re in a horror movie people, it’s Friday night, you’re out with your friends, have some fun.'

The hype for Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker is real. The first details and footage for the blockbuster debuted at Star Wars Celebration earlier this month, and it sent fans racing to board the Star Wars train. However, things didn't used to look so positive for Episode IX. Colin Trevorrow was originally supposed to direct the film, but was fired. It seems that time heals all wounds and Trevorrow is now joking online about The Rise of Skywalker.

The first trailer for The Rise of Skywalker ends with the laugh of Emperor Palpatine as the screen fades to black. One fan posted online an alternate take of this moment in which Jurassic Park villain Dennis Nedry replaces Palpatine. For those who may no remember, Nedry (played by Wayne Knight) was the disgruntled computer programmer who sabotaged the park in order to steal dinosaur DNA.

It might seem pretty random to substitute Nedry and his catchphrase into Star Wars, but not with Trevorrow tagged in the post. Colin Trevorrow is connected to both Jurassic Park and Star Wars. He's something of the overseer of the new Jurassic World movies, and he was the original director of Episode IX before he was fired in 2017.

Colin Trevorrow was let go from Star Wars after Lucasfilm was reportedly dissatisfied with the drafts of the script he was turning in. So he was replaced with J.J. Abrams, who started from scratch.

At the time, it was just the latest behind-the-scenes drama to plague Star Wars, but it seems like Trevorrow is over it all. The director replied to the Nedry post on Twitter joking that those had been his original plans for the movie -- or maybe joking that he had that twist planned for Jurassic World 3.

It's not the only Star Wars-related joke Colin Trevorrow has made online recently. He responded to a tweet of a photoshopped Star Wars poster that had Samuel L. Jackson's Mace Windu as every character. The title of the movie? Star Wars: The Last Motherfucker.

It's good to see that Colin Trevorrow is in good spirits in a post-Star Wars life. He hit a rough patch after the release of his film The Book of Henry, which was absolutely savaged by critics. He lost his Star Wars job soon after, but it wasn't like he didn't have another major franchise to fall back on. He'll be directing the upcoming Jurassic World 3, which is targeting a 2021 release date.

Colin Trevorrow may not have anything to do with it, but there's a lot going on in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker and plenty more to be excited about. Avengers: Endgame Is Expected To Pass $2 Billion This Weekend

Everyone and their grandma went to see Avengers: Endgame last weekend and they must have seen it twice. Marvel's grand finale to the Infinity Saga is destroying every box office record that it comes across, reaching $1 billion worldwide in just one weekend. It's a straight up cultural moment, and it's not done yet. Endgame is on track to take home more than $2 billion by the end of its second weekend.

A sophomore slump doesn't seem to be in the cards for Marvel's latest blockbuster. Endgame is already the 12th highest grossing film domestically, having collected $514 million since it released in theaters on April 26. From Monday to Thursday, it grossed $117 million domestically, topping several single-day release records along the way.

Internationally, the film added $100 million just on Thursday, lifting its overseas total to a current $1.4 billion as of Saturday morning. Globally, Endgame is currently sitting at a total of $1.91 billion, making it the fifth highest grossing film in history, behind only Avengers: Infinity War, Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Titanic, and Avatar.

With practically zero competition this weekend (unless Ugly Dolls is about to pull off the greatest upset in history), passing the $2 billion milestone is well within Endgame's reach. According the Deadline, the superhero epic could pass the benchmark by the end of Saturday. This would make Endgame only the fifth movie in history to gross over $2 billion.

However, the real question on industry analysts' minds is whether Endgame can surpass Avatar to become the highest grossing film of all time. It sounds like people are remaining cautious on the subject. There's never been a film like Endgame and it blew way past initial projections during opening weekend.

That huge opening weekend total will likely lead to a second weekend drop off within the range of 55-57%, according to Box Office Mojo. That's about in line with how Infinity War performed. The real test, however, will be how Endgame performs in the coming weeks when things get a lot more crowded.

Avatar had the advantage of opening in December, so it had ample room to stretch its legs and earn the title it has held for the past decade. Endgame is right at the start of the much more crowded summer season. You've got films like Detective Pikachu, Aladdin, and Godzilla: King of the Monsters all looking for their share of the pie, and they are hungry as hell.

If there is any film that can topple Avatar right now, it's Endgame. It's practically a guarantee at this point that the movie is taking home $2 billion this weekend, and you can bet people are watching very closely for what will happen next.
