Venom Could Have An Especially Big Opening Weekend

Venom Could Have An Especially Big Opening Weekend

We're entering the final months of 2018, and there are still a few superhero movies left to entertain audiences. Aquaman and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse are closing things out in December, but we're only a few weeks away from finally seeing Venom. Not only is this the eponymous character's second live action appearance, following 11 years after Spider-Man 3, the movie is also delving into Eddie Brock's origin story without the Web-Slinger present, so many are interested to see how this adaptation turns out. That being said, if current box office predictions are correct, Venom could become the biggest October opening of all time (not adjusted for inflation).

Early box office tracking initially put Venom at making between $30-$50 million opening weekend domestically, while last month that range increased to $55-$85 million. Now THR has passed along that Venom looks to be settling down for a potential $65 million debut, although Sony is being more conservative with its estimates, instead suggesting a $55-$65 million launch. If Venom manages to hit the $56 million mark or beyond in its first couple days, it will surpass the previous domestic October record holder Gravity, which drew in $55.8 million opening weekend, while other October heavy hitters from recent years include The Martian and Paranormal Activity 3. Venom's biggest competition that opening weekend is Warner Bros' A Star is Born, which earned critical acclaim out of the Toronto International Film Festival, but is predicted to come in second place with between $28-$30 million domestically (Warner Bros says it will be closer to $25 million).

Superhero movies are usually released in the summer movie season or the November/December period, but as we've seen with the likes of Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Deadpool and Black Panther, these kind of blockbusters can be successful in more unusual times of the year. If these early predictions prove correct, Venom will count itself among that successful group, although how it ends up being received critically is a different matter. Nevertheless, Venom is one of the more well-known characters from the Marvel mythology, which ideally will help put butts in seats, and if Venom meets or exceeds these estimates, that increases the chances of a sequel moving forward.

Inspired by the Lethal Protector and Planet of the Symbiotes comic book storylines, Venom will show reporter Eddie Brock becoming bonded with his symbiote and putting his new abilities to the test against the Life Foundation, which is led by Carlton Drake and has other symbiotes lurking behind its walls. Along with Tom Hardy as Eddie Brock/Venom, the movie's cast includes Michelle Williams, Riz Ahmed, Scott Haze, Reid Scott, Jenny Slate and Woody Harrelson.

Directed by Ruben Fleischer, Venom hits theaters on October 5, and if you're interested in what other movies are coming out before the year is over, head to our 2018 release schedule.

Venom Could Have An Especially Big Opening Weekend

As far as trailer views go, it is interesting, I don't think it necessarily promises great BO results, but mostly morbid curiosity. I think the film will have a strong opening weekend but not have much legs, the good news it looks to be made fairly cheap. It doesn't even need to do half of a Deadpool hit to be a financial success.

That smashes the previous October opening record holder Gravity which set the bar at $55.7M in 2013. It's weird to think a superhero/villain film could ever be considered an underdog story (especially this year) but Venom might have been it.

The "Spider-Man" spin-off "Venom" continues robust mid-week business and should score big numbers for its second weekend, even as reviews remain fairly tepid. One common complaint is the film's convoluted plot, one which has some dead ends and plot holes including one big one - the villain symbiote Riot.

Venom came out in early October, dominating the box office on its opening weekend. Despite its success in the earnings department, the viewers' responses to this movie have been mixed. After my first viewing, I must say that my response is varying as well. The first few minutes of this show are packed with exposition.

Venom's Pre-Ticket Sales Are Beating Out Some Of The MCU's Recent Movies

The critical reaction towards Venom may not be great overall so far, but on the commercial side of things, the movie looks like it's going to be a powerhouse performer. Last month, it was estimated that Venom could kick off domestically in the $55-$85 million range, and as of yesterday, Eddie Brock's standalone adventure is predicted to have a global opening weekend haul of between $160-$175 million. Now word's come in that Venom is also doing quite well with regards to advance ticket sales, so much so that it's outselling recent Marvel Cinematic Universe movies Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, Spider-Man: Homecoming and Ant-Man and the Wasp.

While the above three movies weren't the heaviest of hitters in the MCU lineup, like most of their ilk, they nonetheless commercially successful, so Venom is outpacing them in pre-sales is quite the accomplishment. As if that weren't impressive enough, Atom Tickets also noted in its report that among all Marvel movies, i.e. both the Marvel Studios entries and stories made by other studios that carry the Marvel banner, Venom ranks in third place, with Avengers: Infinity War and Black Panther making up the top 2. Looking outside of the comic book realm, the majority of people buying Venom tickets ahead of time on Atom Tickets fall into the 18-29 age range, so clearly a lot of young'uns are itching for some big screen, symbiote-enhanced action. As for why Venom is killing it with pre-sales, Atom Tickets editorial lead Alisha Grauso noted that even though the movie has been getting mixed reviews, there's still a lot of excitement to see this newest live action take on the character and how Tom Hardy handles the role.

Although every movie aims to be both critically and commercially successful, sometimes one doesn't always lead to the other. In Venom's case, if the early reviews are any indication, it's won't go down in history as one of the best comic book movies, but on the money front, there won't be any issues. I imagine another reason a lot of folks are eager to watch Venom is to see how Eddie Brock's origin story is handled without Spider-Man being around. That, along with the other characters and plenty of action, provides numerous reasons for people to check out Venom this weekend, though it should also be noted that Venom's opening weekend competition, A Star is Born, is also doing well in pre-sales, outperforming Oscar contenders like The Big Sick, The Shape of Water, and Call Me By Your Name.

You can judge Venom for yourself starting on Friday (or even tomorrow evening, depending on where you live), but be sure to read CinemaBlend's review of the movie now. As for what else 2018 has in store, look through our release schedule to learn what else is hitting theaters before the year is over.

Putting out a few successful movies, then selling while their worth is high would be a better plan and future-proof them a bit. If they sold back to Marvel/Disney, then they could gain Disney stock that's only going to raise in value; they could also sign some sort of exclusivity deal wherein SONY makes the games based on Marvel properties.

It's still bad enough I may avoid it because of my flight to New York and the fact that I have an anime convention and some relatives I'm seeing. The reason why I'm so paranoid is because one time I had a movie I was going to see the following weekend and the next minute, it was already gone.

With Infinity War, An Avengers Movie Finally Gets Thor Right

With Infinity War, An Avengers Movie Finally Gets Thor Right

Warning: spoilers for Avengers: Infinity War are in play. If you haven't seen the film yet, and don't want to find out any of the finer plot points, please bookmark this item and come back once you've seen the film.

Throughout his own trilogy of films, the character of Chris Hemsworth's Thor has at best been a comedic jokester and at worst a meat-headed warrior who didn't really get to be much of a lead character. That's nothing against Hemsworth's abilities, as those first two Thor movies had problems with being too serious for his character, leaving the third to over correct just a little in the way of comedy. But finally, Avengers: Infinity War managed to take Thor Odinson and turn him into a well-balanced character, netting him the trophy of the Most Improved Avenger in the film. In fact, I'd argue Infinity War is the first time Marvel gets Thor just right.

While the character has always been a fun inclusion in the Avengers lineup, making wisecracks in-between hammer throws, Thor as an individual has not always been that captivating of a person -- at least beyond his hammer-wielding abilities. That began to change with the overly funny Thor: Ragnarok, but it really hits home not too long after Avengers: Infinity War opens its action, with Thor not only being forced to faced down the loss of his species, but also the departure of his friend, Heimdall, and his adopted brother, Loki. So, by the end of the cold open for this third Avengers movie, we see the prince of Asgard beginning a journey of introspection that's been long overdue.

After seeing the man who could swing a hammer and save the world lose everything between Thor: Ragnarok and Avengers: Infinity War's opening moments, to see Chris Hemsworth get to actually break all of that down on screen is a damned treat. We still get some fantastic moments of humor, especially with Thor triggering some massive insecurity with Star-Lord and a sense of awe with the rest of the Guardians of the Galaxy, but the real meat of Thor's quest is in his quest for a Thanos killer on the planet of Nidavellir.

The quest itself is Thor's way of trying to build himself back up after the most devastating losses, and Hemsworth is most certainly game for that. Watching him talk things out with Rocket Raccoon was a quiet moment that pays off in the best way possible when he ultimately forges and uses Stormbreaker. After losing everything, Thor is severely desperate to get back in the saddle and be a hero again, only this time it's not out of youthful impulse. Paying close attention to his conversation with Rocket, you can see a bit more of the age and wisdom in his person, particularly due to the fact that Chris Hemsworth seems to have adopted more of the tone and mannerisms of Anthony Hopkins' Odin. We've seen the son become the father, and now he is ready to become the hero he was always meant to be.

All of this character development crystallizes in the moment when Thor himself holds open the iris of Eitri's forge, as he's ready to give everything in a last ditch effort to defeat Thanos. It's a revenge quest, most certainly, but rather than being blindly driven to succeed through an emotional fog, Thor seems to have learned the lessons he should have learned throughout all of his time in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. There's no sub-par romance to distract him, nor is his journey an overly colorful gag-fueled spectacle. It's the birth of a true hero, forged in pain and sacrifice, delivering one hell of a satisfying blow with a brand new ax of justice.

Seeing Thor evolve into the character he's become in Avengers: Infinity War has finally proven that the last son of the Asgardian dynasty is someone that has more depth than most fans have given him credit for. Fulfilling the more dramatic promise that's always been hinted at with the character, the team behind this monumental film have given Chris Hemsworth material in the MCU that's finally used the acting chops he's expressed in films outside of his tenure in the comic realm. That alone has us anxious to see how that development pays off in Avengers 4, as well as has me hoping he can get at least one more film to close his arc out the right way -- with a wise and battle-worn Thor holding court over a potentially resurrected Asgard.

Avengers: Infinity War is currently in theaters, ready for you to give Thor another chance.
