Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse Has Revealed Even More Spider-Heroes
Over the last 16 years, we've been seen three different actors play Spider-Man across six live action movies, not to mention that Tom Holland's has also shown up in Captain America: Civil War and Avengers: Infinity War. However, while Marvel's Web-Slinger has a long history in animation, he hasn't led his own animated movie. That changes this winter with the release of Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, which will see Miles Morales teaming up with a Peter Parker from another universe. But those won't be the only Spider-heroes to show up in Into the Spider-Verse, and it's just been revealed that Spider-Ham and Peni Parker, a.k.a. SP//dr, are the newest additions to the lineup.
It was announced at San Diego Comic-Con that comedian John Mulaney and Orange is the New Black star Kimiko Glenn will voice Spider-Ham and Peni Parker, respectively, in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. Just like the adult Peter Parker, who's being voiced by Jake Johnson, they'll hail from other universes, though it remains to be seen how heavily Spider-Ham and Peni will factor into the story. Along with Shameik Moore's Miles Morales leading the show, Into the Spider-Verse's other Spider-heroes include Hailee Steinfeld as Spider-Gwen and Nicolas Cage as Spider-Man Noir, which was also confirmed at the SDCC panel.
Like DC Comics, Marvel has its own multiverse, and many of those realities have their own Spider-hero, though not all of them are called Spider-Man. Pena Parker hails from Earth-14512, and her father built the SP//dr suit. Sadly, Peni's father died when she was nine, and she was told by her Uncle Ben and Aunt May that she was the only one who could carry the SP//dr project forward. One radioactive spider bite later, and Peni carried on her father's legacy by using the SP//dr suit to fight the forces of evil. Then there's Peter Porker, a.k.a. Spider-Ham, who hails from Earth-8311, a.k.a. Larval Earth, which is populated by anthropomorphic animals. As you can probably guess, Spider-Man was originally created strictly to be a comical character; as an example of this, he was originally a spider who was bitten by an irradiated, scientist pig named May Porker, thus turning him into a superpowered pig. However, Spider-Ham did participate in the Spider-Verse comic book event, and he later returned for 2015's Secret Wars and starred in the Web Warriors book.
In total, we have six Spider-heroes showing up in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse so far, but I won't be surprised if that number increases. Of course, Into the Spider-Verse's main story revolves around Miles Morales beginning his Spider-Man journey, and his origin story will see him fighting his own uncle, Aaron Davis, a.k.a. Prowler, voiced by Mahershala Ali; Wilson Fisk, a.k.a. Kingpin, voiced by Liev Schreiber; and Green Goblin, whose voice actor hasn't been revealed yet. Into the Spider-Verse's cast also includes Brian Tyree Henry as Miles' father, Jefferson Davis; Luna Lauren Velez as Miles' mother, Rio Morales; and Lily Tomlin as Peter Parker's Aunt May.
